Tariffs are simply by far the best way to collect taxes, for a lot of reasons, and, oddly enough, it actually benefits BOTH the nation collecting the tariffs AND the nation being tariff (most of the time).
For some reason they are memed as some "trade war" like a pro-wrestling pre-match face off.
WTF could it benefit the nation being HIT with a tariff? Because vast majority of Exports come with govt support. That means the Govt is taking money from everyone else so some party doing exports is in fact getting Welfare, and 'rent seeking' etc for their personal profit at the expense of everyone else.
Thus a tariff imposed by an Importer is in fact a TAX ON GOVT in the nation being hit with the tariff, and thus dis-incentivizes various Rent Seeking schemes in the nation being hit with the tariff.
"but tariff is just passed on to consumer in form of higher prices!!!" Also stupid.
What all these Economics PhDs forget to mention is the other side of the balance books. If the Govt collects tariffs that means it can reduce other taxes, so people have more money in pocket to pay the "higher price due to tariffs".
Yes, its really that stupid and there is no real difference between the purely political dogma being enforced on these issues in Ivy League Economics Depts and various mirror institutions in the old USSR or North Korea today regarding the Establishment's dogma.
Econ math wise, WTF actually "pays" tariffs?
In you typical "perfect" Economics model, the cost will become split 50/50 between the consumer and the producer.
taxes can do two things:
fund govt programs
punish unwanted behaviors ("sin tax")
Our current system (IRS) punishes Gainful Employment.
Tariffs punish foreign govts that tax their own people to transfer to a few of their own wealthy corp welfare queens to "encourage exports" OR punish foreign price gougers/profiteering.
Typical Ivy League Economics professors, particularly of the Austrian School, argue against Tariffs but only in that they are any sort of tax and all tax is bad and market is always smarter than public policy, etc. When asked to COMPARE tariffs to other forms of tax, once granted that SOME tax will be required at SOME point in the Economy, they are completely stupefied. Like Joe Biden stupefied.
They will literally stop talking, get a dull glazed look on their faces, circle the podium a couple times and wander off stage to the wrong exit. I've seen it happen.
Tariffs being one of the better way to fund govt, for the sake of funding itself, is only one of several Great Taboos in post-1913, and even more so post-1945, American (and most European) academia.
Encouraging local production also has several important non-Economic benefits, such as making product safety and regulation better and easier. But probably most importantly it reduces the need to get into wars, and to lie about reasons to get into wars. A prime example is Trump's "rare earth for military support" in Ukraine. The Rare Earth is all in territory we still call Ukraine but held by Russian Bear and called "Russia" by Putin. Anyone see how that could be a problem?
If the Japs had invented a way to produce oil domestically would they have bombed Pearl Harbor?
As far as The Lying (always with The Lying amirite?) its stump speech Squawking Point of Kosher Chicken Hawks (all Chicken Hawks must be made Kosher by actual Rabbi, you can't just stand up and flap your arms screeching "look, I'm a Chicken Hawk!" and get on Fox and Friends) to respond to a Fox News Bunny's question "and why does the USA support Israel, Professor?" with "Because the USA has Vital Interests in the Middle East (you dumb cunt)".
Of course the only interest USA has in the MidEast is oil, which would be only a reason to not support Israel, as proven by 1970s "energy crisis" which were all completely caused by USA's support of Israel, including even the Iranian Revolution.
