:Botched': Arizona GOP's ballot count ends, troubles persist'

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Republicans’ partisan review of the 2020 election results got off to a rocky start when their contractors broke rules for counting ballots and election experts warned the work was dangerous for democracy.

When the auditors stopped the counting and returned the ballots this week, it hadn't gotten better. In the last week alone, the only audit leader with substantial election experience was locked out of the building, went on the radio to say he was quitting, then reversed course hours later. The review's Twitter accounts were suspended for breaking the rules. A conservative Republican senator withdrew her support, calling the process “botched.” And the lead auditor confirmed what was long suspected: that his work was almost entirely paid for by supporters of Donald Trump who were active in the former president’s movement to spread false narratives of fraud.

All this came nearly 100 days into a process that was supposed to take “about 60 days," according to the Senate Republicans who launched it. And it's not over yet. Contractors are now producing a report on the findings that could take weeks or more to write.

The turmoil casts even more doubt on the conclusions of what backers describe as a “forensic audit" but what experts and critics say is a deeply flawed, partisan process.

“Not even a shred of being salvaged at this point,” said Sen. Paul Boyer, the first Republican state senator to publicly come out against the audit in May. “They’ve botched it at so many points along the way that it's irrecoverable.”

Boyer's opposition became less lonely last weekend when another Republican, Sen. Michelle Ugenti-Rita, one of the Legislature's strongest advocates for stricter voting laws, agreed that “the Trump audit” was “botched.” Along with all 14 Democrats, a majority of the Senate, which commissioned the audit, is now against it.

“I wanted to review our election processes and see what, if anything, could be improved,” Ugenti-Rita wrote on Twitter. “Sadly, it's now become clear that the audit has been botched.”

The review includes a hand count of ballots, the analysis of voter data and a review of ballot-counting machines. It's being led by Cyber Ninjas, a software security consultant with no election experience before Trump began trying to overturn the 2020 results. Its owner, Doug Logan, has supported the movement to spread false conspiracies about the vote count in battleground states.

On Wednesday night, Logan ended months of silence about who was paying him when he said a whopping $5.7 million had been contributed by political groups run by prominent Trump supporters including Michael Flynn, Sidney Powell, Patrick Byrne and correspondents from One America News Network. The figure dwarfs the $150,000 to be paid by the Senate.

Former police chief pleads guilty to assaulting dad who tried to drown baby in pond

GREENWOOD, Mo. — A former Missouri police chief has pleaded guilty to attacking a father who tried in 2018 to drown his 6-month-old daughter.

Greg Hallgrimson, 51, of Kansas City, was the chief of the Greenwood Police Department on Dec. 17, 2018, when he threw a handcuffed and restrained Jonathon Zicarelli to the ground and punched him in the face.

Hallgrimson, who later resigned his post, was indicted in November 2019 on a federal charge of depriving Zicarelli of his rights. Zicarelli, 31, is awaiting trial on felony charges of child abuse and domestic assault, according to the Kansas City Star.

If the former chief’s plea is accepted by the court, he will be sentenced to probation for the attack on Zicarelli, the court documents show. The maximum sentence for deprivation of civil rights is 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

The former lawman pleaded guilty to end the case and “move forward with his life,” his attorney told the Star.

“He believes that the plea terms are fair and hopes they will be given consideration by the court,” defense attorney Robin Fowler said in a statement.

A probable cause affidavit in Zicarelli’s case states that he walked into the Greenwood Police Department shortly after 10 a.m. that December day and told police officers he’d just drowned his daughter.

Hallgrimson and Cpl. Thomas Calhoun immediately raced to the pond, which was about a mile from the police station, while Lt. Aaron Fordham handcuffed Zicarelli and sat him in a chair. At the pond, Calhoun and the chief found Zicarelli’s infant daughter floating face-up in the water.

Calhoun jumped into the icy water, where the child had been submerged for over 10 minutes, the court papers allege. She appeared lethargic and lifeless, with her eyes wide open, authorities said.

“The child had mud in her eyes, grass and water in her mouth and was barely moving,” Calhoun wrote in the affidavit.

The officers removed the girl’s wet clothes and Hallgrimson wrapped her in his uniform shirt to warm her up, according to KMBC in Kansas City.

Hallgrimson and Calhoun administered first aid until paramedics arrived and took over, rushing the baby to a hospital. Upon her arrival in the emergency room, her body temperature was 87.9 — more than 10 degrees below normal, the news station said.

She was treated for severe hypothermia.

As paramedics arrived, Hallgrimson left the scene and went back to the department.

“Defendant Hallgrimson entered the door of the Greenwood Police Department and immediately walked, without saying anything, to the location where (Zicarelli) was handcuffed behind his back and sitting in a chair,” Hallgrimson’s plea agreement states.

Hallgrimson yanked Zicarelli from the chair onto the floor, causing his eyeglasses to fly off his face. The chief then got on top of the handcuffed man and began pummeling him and screaming at him, the documents state.

“You deserve to die,” Hallgrimson said, according to the Star.

Family upset after employee uses racial slur on their receipt at kid-friendly business

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County family says an employee at a business that caters to mostly children used a racial slur on their receipt.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes talked to Stefan Black, who brought about 10 of his relatives to an Urban Air Adventure Park in Lawrenceville to celebrate his niece’s birthday.

Black said that when the group ordered food, a young black man took their order and took their name to put on the receipt.

“My last name is Black. Everybody calls me Black. So I tell him, you know, ‘Black,’” Black said. “I took at my receipt to see what time I ordered, and in plain sight, it said NIGGER."

Black said he and his family were shocked and they went straight to the manager.

“The first thing they offered was to give us passes to come back and free fries,” Black said. “Wasn’t good.”

The owner, named Gregory White, who is also Black, said the black man who typed the slur is no longer employed. But Black said that he feels that the fact that the owner is Black is what made the employee think he could get away with using a slur.

Owner Gregory White, who is black, sent Channel 2 Action News a statement, saying:

“The owner apologizes for the inappropriate comment typed on the receipt. That employee no longer works at Urban Air.”

White said the company has zero tolerance for that kind of behavior.

Black said the owner would not give him the physical receipt back and told the family to get a lawyer.

Black said they plan to do just that.

UPDATE: The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced Friday that eastbound lanes of the Hernando DeSoto Bridge would reopen at 10 p.m. Saturday, about 24 hours ahead of a schedule released earlier this week.

The westbound lanes may also open sooner than the scheduled date of Friday, TDOT said.

The agency said a contractor on the bridge was running ahead of schedule on the work.

Father, sons credited with helping save woman stuck on railroad tracks in Germantown

GERMANTOWN, (Memphis) Tenn. — An 84-year-old woman says she’s grateful to a man and his sons after they likely saved her life at a Germantown railroad crossing.

Lutie Darnell says she was turning right onto Poplar Pike from West Street around 9 p.m. June 21, but turned too sharply and got stuck on the tracks.

“Unbeknownst to me a train was coming,” she said. “I don’t remember hearing a signal or seeing a signal.”

Thankfully, George Kohlbacher and his sons Jonas and Joshua spotted Darnell as they were also turning onto Poplar Pike.

“We saw the train and the thought that went across my mind was, we got to get her out of there right now,” Jonas said.

Jonas and Joshua carried Darnell to safety.

“They got me out of the car, and got me just out of the car when the train hit the back of it,” Darnell said. “Really at risk of their life they came up there. I just can’t commend them enough.”

Germantown Police commended them too, by honoring George, 13-year-old Jonas and 15-year-old Joshua with Civilian Service Awards during a Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting Monday night.

“It was surreal and it was humbling to see people who are, by all accounts, heroes and they’re like, ‘You’re a hero,'” Joshua said.

The incident happened in June, but more than a month later, the rescuers feel like it was yesterday.

“We were just glad to be in the right place at the right time,” George said.

“My three guardian angels,” Darnell said.

The two young boys say they’re humbled by the awards they were given and say they were excited to meet the mayor.
