If you understand ransomware attacks, then it doesn't really make a lot of sense about the gas pipeline being "shut off" preemptively by the owners.
That preventative measure doesn't even make sense
The ransomware hackers allegedly offered to give the decryption tool to the company for the money (just like they always do)
But what data was encrypted by the hackers?
what kind of data would lead the company to take a preventative measure of shutting the pipeline down just in case?

Ransomware hackers usually ask for the same nominal amount, whether it's the city of Atlanta, or a tiny little backwoods township, or a law firm, or any other business
It seems like they would ask for 100 million dollars
But they generally only ask for $50,000

And they generally honor the agreement, because if they don't honor it, their next victims are unlikely to pay
Did they threaten some kind of physical destruction? Exactly why would they shut down the service as a "preventative measure"?
