I think there's a good chance you're misinterpreting the results of the reverse IP lookup. The fact that all these domains share these IPs does not necessarily mean they're on the same server. What's more likely is that they use the same DDoS protection service but are otherwise not connected.

What it shows is that VanwaNet has very few customers. You can't make any implication beyond that about servers or accounts, because all of that is behind the CDN layer, and you can't see it. You're trying to say checkmate when it's a check at best, and it might be nothing at worst. (This is why Brennan's research into connecting sites to owners is important. That *could* lead to checkmate.)

Reverse IP lookups don't mean as much these days, because so many sites are behind a CDN, and the lookup will take you to the CDN but not beyond it. Try looking up adl.com which resolves to 213.182.41.167 . If you hit the IP directly, you'll see a French message, so adl.com uses a French CDN. If you do a reverse IP lookup, you get a ton of sites.

It's highly unlikely that adl.com is sharing servers or accounts on some French CDN with all those sites.

If you want to prove all this to yourself, you could make a free account on cloudflare.com and put one of your own websites behind it. You could then do a reverse IP lookup on your own site, and you'd get a huge list of sites that you KNOW you don't share anything with.

This is the folly of putting too much weight on reverse IP lookups in the age of affordable CDNs. Maybe 10-15 years ago, it was a valid research technique but not today.

In the 2000s, their biggest break seems to have been running the "pink" (adult content) board servers in the United States for 2channel, as the content of those servers was legally difficult to operate directly in Japan or under Hiroyuki's direct ownership. They later provided hosting for 2channel's paid services, handling CC info and such, and hosted the official viewer and archive access for 2channel. So they seemingly had a good (mutually beneficial) business relationship with Hiro, who delegated more and more of the operational responsibilities to them while still being the figurehead admin. Hiro also turned over official control of 2channel over to a company called "Packet Monster" based in Singapore, which was really a shell company made by himself to protect himself from Japanese litigation. Hiro was also busy with other successful, legally legitimate projects at time, like Niconico, so this was probably a necessity on his part. Even if he didn't run day-to-day operations or moderation, he had the final say for the site, much like he does today with 4chan.

This balancing act seems to have went on rather smoothly until 2013, when someone gained access into the infrastructure for the payment service and leaked CC's and personal info via onionsites, revealing some of the identities of people who paid to use 2channel. Since 2channel was taken more seriously and more generally used than 4chan ever was, I'd compare this to leaking emails, real names and CC information of redditors who paid for reddit gold.

The leak simultaneously shattered trust in 2channel as effectively anonymous, caused the payments to be halted, and revealed the incompetency of Watkins' hosting company, for which he publicly apologized. This is where things get become become hazy, but here's my take on it:

Watkins was now in a very precarious position. His main revenue stream had dried up, and with his piss-poor security practices revealed to the world it was possible that Hiro would soon step in and migrate services away from Watkins. But this would take time, especially finding an accommodating payment processor, and Watkins still held the keys to a good chunk of 2channel's infrastructure for the time being. So he seemingly complied and worked with Hiro after the leak to settle immediate issues, all the while ensuring he had enough access to 2channel to lock Hiro out. Then, when the 2ch.net domain name was up for renewal, he had his own company, the registrar, claim it away from Packet Monster, locked Hiro out, and that was that. He now owned 2channel.

How he managed to get the moderation team to migrate over I don't know. Maybe he was already on terms with them, or maybe he had reached out to them and secured their trust, maybe it was just an ultimatum, but either way they went along with the coup. For his part, Watkins then made the archives of the site free to access as a concession to the users.

Hiro attempted to get the rights to the domain back, but because it was not him that owned the rights, but instead the shell company in Singapore, WIPO decided that he was not legitimate owner of the domain, and that it was a dispute between the companies registering it which fell outside their jurisdiction. At this point Hiro made a clone of 2ch in protest, 2ch.sc, which still operates to this day independently of 2ch.net , which was renamed redirected to 5channel to avoid confusion. Like 4chan and 8chan, 2ch.net is still the most popular one by far, but 2ch.sc gets relatively more traffic to 2ch.net than 8chan does to 4chan.

Later on, Watkins took note of the controversy surrounding 4chan during gamergate, and probably saw the fledgling 8chan as the potential successor to 4chan. It sure seemed that way to many people at the time, who felt that 4chan's moderation had gone too far in suppressing discussion of controversial political/social movements. So AFAIK he offered to provide the hosting and income to Hotwheels and Joshua Moon, with the idea that Watkins would be in charge of devising monetization schemes that were accordant with the current admins. While I imagine this arrangement would not have been built to last, it seems like Watkins never needed to do anything on his part to seize further control - seems like Hotwheels and Josh had their falling out and resignation largely independently. So ownership fell naturally to Watkins.

4chan, at least in the sense of popularity and finances, eventually recovered from gamergate and the fappening, and Hiro was able to keep the site chugging along with relatively little change, save the 4chan/4channel split in an attempt to bring back monetization. By this point, 8chan had its place as the main alternative/protest board to 4chan, but had not become nearly as used many imagined. And so it continued chugging along, with occasional hiccups and practical legal restrictions on some content, until it was kicked off the clearnet in 2019, and came back to where it is now. It's honestly surprising that both sites are still up, with relatively similar standards as they had in 2015, and a similar relationship to one another.

So Watkins and Hiro both have a long relationship going back, both have plenty of experience running controversial sites, and are less idealists than they are willing to make a buck hosting speech and content that few others are willing to do, at least at a similar scale. I will give Hiro credit for actually being a innovator though - making 2channel and being the primary inspiration for sites like Niconico Douga, and generally coming up with many of the customs of both sites. He (or whoever he delegated it to) probably ran 4chan better through 2016-2020 than moot would have, given moot's desire to control the cultural direction of the site. Hiro's reputation in Japan is also generally still positive, unlike Watkins.
