They are political in that politics dictates what is written and what the trends in science are. At the bottom line financing is only what matters, typically an academic institution or research lab loves to ride a bs dead end for 10+ years long as long as they get financed to produce a few papers on it. This is also what is happening with the social sciences but on a much larger and a much more harmful scale to society. Often bullshit papers do not get a lot of traction and maybe 1 or 2 citations. But a lot of things in social sciences have just been building bullshit on top of more bullshit.
