In the winter I ski and play hockey (badly). In summer I skateboard (also badly) and swim. I walk a lot. This is plenty to keep me fit. Why does not going to a gym necessarily mean slob?

You don't really need a gym unless you are training for a specific sport. For a normal man, some dumbells and kettlebells, and maybe a plyobox should be sufficient to keep you in good condition. If you live in a place with cold winters, get a stationary bike so you can still get your cardio.
