The more serious implication is that it will impact corporate security and be a potential social engineering tool to influence accountants/engineers/technicians. There's already been a rather creative case where scammers defraud a British company $243,000, via an audio deepfake they developed by sampling the German CEO's voice of its parent company. I see the application taking a more malicious turn where deepfakes can be used to trick employees to divulge certain information and/or make decisions that compromise security or even sabotage systems.

Notice how this deepfake stuff seemed to explode out of nowhere after the whole PG/Epstein thing blew up? There's a theory going around that the whole thing is being put out there as another form of insurance. With enough coordination we could also build reasonable urban communities. It's not necessary to know where all the rural communities are, but if there's a few people who can run trade between our isolated rural communities then a reasonable trade town can be built up…and from there, we could invest in infrastructure that would help us when shit hits the fan.

Most people are honest, so deepfakes won’t affect most of life. This is just going to be about whether the slave caste realizes their broken submission - that which they call defiance - is actually a form of living on their knees.

You talk as though deepfakes are likely to affect people in general as opposed to figures of particular interest. Why make a deepfake of everyday Joe Blowy? The technology would be centered around political figures and celebrities, where rumours and allegations, even if proven untrue, are still able to irrevocably detriment their name. It could be used to manufacture evidence in criminal cases as well, and sway public opinion. What ordinary viewer would question news footage of little children being blown up in some sad war-ridden country? Who is going to verify the existence of those survivors as live people instead of deepfakes?

The dishonesty of a few can shackle the honest masses. All I can hope for is that it brings about a new fervour for truth and objective information, as more people learn more how cunning and powerful lies can be perhaps they will stop listening blindly to all that's broadcasted and raise the value of accurate knowledge.

Good point, but that will still only affect the people directly involved, namely the two spouses and their children. It won't really affect society generally unless that starts happening too often, in which case I imagine further proof would then be required like phone records and that.

I think the real power of deepfakes only emerges when nobody even thinks to question the veracity of the footage/image. In a divorce case, the husband would no doubt protest his innocence and call it out as a fake, but in some manufactured news footage, cries of "fake" may be drowned out entirely. Especially when there isn't anybody there to call it out.

Do you happen to know much about the cost of producing deepfakes and what kind of technical skill is involved? I'm afraid my knowledge is lacking on that aspect.

That aside, the topic more broadly: forged evidence is nothing new. Computer generation could lead to a new era of art. Right now very few people have access to sophisticated tools, which makes abuses fewer yet far nastier.

Right now high-quality fake evidence would be unstoppable. People who have begun to be set upon a path look for reasons that they are right, not reasons that they are wrong, so forging evidence of a sufficient evil against a person will stabilize into hostilities that people rarely blow the whistle on. In the future, that will be less tenable, and “faked evidence” defenses are going to immiserate courts. Yet the basic improbability of fakes will begin to hit from one direction as people produce tsunamis of trashy art rather than anything evil, while the general stupidity of criminals will hit from another direction as sloppy fakes meet scientific dissection. Only criminals who strike motivelessly and with skill into the general population with the intention of finding truly improbable victims will be able to make the kind of deepfakes that unleash roiling waves of chaos into the world.

One of the most important things to do contra deepfakes is to eliminate illicit civilian surveillance networks. Only if there’s a channel for the information to be generated can false evidence be passed. Many people believe “what is buried is true” so they believe lies about people from those peoples’ “friends” more than the statements of those people themselves. By the same principle they believe that illicitly recorded information is more honest than public statements. One of the most profound social threats from deepfakes is that it will enable a high class of fake evidence to be embedded into networks of people who guarantee the “integrity” of their “friends” (ie, people they hate) with secret observation so that their “friends” cannot be secretly disloyal. The lower technical barriers will equip gossips with “proof” that their worst suspicions are true. The poor victims meanwhile will face down people trying to hint-hint them into “betraying” themselves. The loyalist-inclined will even feel rejected because they’re not trusted enough to “admit” sins towards.

Ironically, as with many of the nightmares of criminality, this will fall on criminals moreso than the general public, as Joe and Samantha Rando are probably not spying on their friends, but Don Ratissimus needs to know that his bloodthirsty “friends” aren’t writing his name on their bullets. This means his opponents will be motivated to pass him fake evidence - and maybe even rig his kit to generate it. Microchips and flash drives have gotten pretty small nowadays. Rigged kit could (tactically, should) be programmed to mostly report truth and edit almost none of what transpires in its “view”. The higher your truth fraction, the more believable your lie. Double-crossers learn to speak nearly pure truth to both sides.

On the plus side, deepfakes might remove a tool of psychological abuse from the “what is buried is true” set, especially if the technology gets comprehensively suborned by criminals fighting each other.

In general, the antidote to deepfakes is the antidote to most skullduggery: don’t do it, reveal the perpetrators, reveal the victims, and live peacefully so you can’t be chained into the eternal wars of authoritarian liars.

If you think about it, aliens must have been through deepfakes already. Algorithmic video-editing is a technology that will gel together eventually even if people are only trying to maximize the quality of recording, so even the most spiritually perfect species should have hit this speedbump at some point. I did one. It takes a fair bit of technical sophistication, python scripting against a cloud computing backend. I was able to do a shitty one for free using two days of compute time.

From what I read you can do a good one using a couple of days with a good consumer PC. Could probably bang them out quickly if you were willing to rent a real cloud compute (couple hundred a month) and developed the skills. It's certainly no challenge for a major corporation or state.
