They mean that you can no longer trust any digital media to be true or real.
Its only a matter of decades before you will no longer be able to trust what your eyes see as true or real either.

The more serious implication is that it will impact corporate security and be a potential social engineering tool to influence accountants/engineers/technicians. There's already been a rather creative case where scammers defraud a British company $243,000, via an audio deepfake they developed by sampling the German CEO's voice of its parent company. I see the application taking a more malicious turn where deepfakes can be used to trick employees to divulge certain information and/or make decisions that compromise security or even sabotage systems.
Use in media propaganda is rather mundane compared to its full potential of what it can do.

Not only is media propaganda a mundane application, but if deepfake audio becomes prevalent then people will notice - these things aren't perfect. Once people notice, then faith in the MSM will crumble. It'll only take one or two fake "Trump raping a small child" tapes for people to throw the MSM in the trash.

Notice how this deepfake stuff seemed to explode out of nowhere after the whole PG/Epstein thing blew up? There's a theory going around that the whole thing is being put out there as another form of insurance. If someone suddenly leaks a load of video footage of elites doing things they shouldn't be doing onto the web, they now have the defense of saying it's all deepfakes.

>the thing to do now is build rural communities and wait for shit to hit the fan so we can rebuild.
With enough coordination we could also build reasonable urban communities. It's not necessary to know where all the rural communities are, but if there's a few people who can run trade between our isolated rural communities then a reasonable trade town can be built up…and from there, we could invest in infrastructure that would help us when shit hits the fan.
We do not have to wait for shit to hit the fan to rebuild. We can start rebuilding now.

That it will be used as an excuse by the media and government to dismiss actual video-footage as being fake. The media is pushing footage this talking point in advance already that fake news will spread if people were to get their hands on this technology. But in reality, it is already available to the public and hasn't really been used very much for deceptive purposes. Only for memes and for reinforcing the point about how the bad people will use it.

It’s a call towards voluntary honesty. Nothing ever could break the chains forged on the souls of those who submit to telling lies.
Most people are honest, so deepfakes won’t affect most of life. This is just going to be about whether the slave caste realizes their broken submission - that which they call defiance - is actually a form of living on their knees.

I can’t say that the way to not fear data collection is to do no wrong, because I know that oracles make the most excellent liars. I know also that honest oracles may be brutally misunderstood. Indeed, as our oracles must have evaluations in the loop - be they built of neurons or of silicon - it is also possible for oracles to misunderstand, and to then promulgate errors with vast catalogues of “incontrovertible” evidence. There is no rarely any wrong more profound than that which is enacted by those whose virtues are true against those whose virtues are also true, and the first may protest their virtue in truth even as they be the errors of deceits of others become truly the villain before the second.
As myself, I am the last; I do not punish save by being, and thus I have been the second, not the first.
The problem is we have still got criminals in the observation loop, and people have been allowed to operate systems of concealed observation. In this we are to be theocratic; we are to trust in the god who watches unseen, and we are to be compliant to a force which hides its actual sins in shallow lies, as though none could oppose them without thinking they rape children. We who have risen so far in secularism are for some reason a once to kneel before a god who screams, “We know not God’s plan!”
That God is raw chaos, and in its delusion it deserves not our worship, for it knows not its own plan. True science may be observed, and acts not as would require concealment. Still yet it gathers data and makes its inferences, and in being unpunishing it does not become the first of virtue against the second of virtue. God watches unobserved, and remains God when it claims secularism; the paradise of knowledge which defies God is found in transparency.
Transparency as well is the balm against deepfakes. If all such artifice is clearly labeled and people make honest tools of it, a new era of culture could dawn from its produce. Only if people submit to God by striving to be ineffable do deepfakes have darker implications.
Turn against God’s plan; stand in the truer light of an unpunishing reciprocity.

You talk as though deepfakes are likely to affect people in general as opposed to figures of particular interest. Why make a deepfake of everyday Joe Blowy? The technology would be centered around political figures and celebrities, where rumours and allegations, even if proven untrue, are still able to irrevocably detriment their name. It could be used to manufacture evidence in criminal cases as well, and sway public opinion. What ordinary viewer would question news footage of little children being blown up in some sad war-ridden country? Who is going to verify the existence of those survivors as live people instead of deepfakes?
The dishonesty of a few can shackle the honest masses. All I can hope for is that it brings about a new fervour for truth and objective information, as more people learn more how cunning and powerful lies can be perhaps they will stop listening blindly to all that's broadcasted and raise the value of accurate knowledge.

Pedo blackmail becomes worthless unless it's cryptographic-ally stamped as generated before deep fakes were a thing. So basically Wikileaks dump is the last viable cache of pedo blackmail. This tanks the market for blackmail and people will sell (use it). Expect to see a lot of burned assets in the next decade as they become uncontrollable liabilities.

I think the advent of deepfakes will be a major turning point in history as societies will start to drift away from cult of personality style elections and politics when literally anyone can have a sextape made of them, or worse.
It is really an artform. It is the next generation of meme. I am still waiting for someone to drop the Trump Hotel Russia prostitute golden shower deepfake. I think it would be a bit hit this year if it could be convincingly pulled off. Or a story daniels video. There is a way to deter deepfakes though and that involves continually upping the quality of images and cameras.
A good deepfake can be done in less than a day by algorithm alone, but imagine trying to do the same for a 4k or 8k resolution video. I cant wait for Avatar 2 in 48FPS

Good point, but that will still only affect the people directly involved, namely the two spouses and their children. It won't really affect society generally unless that starts happening too often, in which case I imagine further proof would then be required like phone records and that.
I think the real power of deepfakes only emerges when nobody even thinks to question the veracity of the footage/image. In a divorce case, the husband would no doubt protest his innocence and call it out as a fake, but in some manufactured news footage, cries of "fake" may be drowned out entirely. Especially when there isn't anybody there to call it out.
Do you happen to know much about the cost of producing deepfakes and what kind of technical skill is involved? I'm afraid my knowledge is lacking on that aspect.

The media wishes to have you believe that it will result in not being able to tell what footage is real and that deepfake footage will be used to spread fake news. In reality, they are simply priming you for when an establishment politician needs to deny real video footage of them committing a crime. They will simply say it's a deepfake and the media will do damage control for him, stating that his claim of deepfakes was correct. Not everyone will be convinced, obviously, but enough for it to be memory-holed. Actual deepfakes have enough artifacting that you can still fairly easily tell with the naked eye that something is wrong and, even if it becomes indistinguishable to the naked eye, it will still take a very long time for it to become impossible to distinguish through image processing (if ever at all).

I don’t know why this meme is on the shit that follows me around. Gonna have to be way more blatant if it’s some kind of reference, lol; it’s more interesting than creepy.
OP did obligatory race-slaving with their image, because we’re not to forget we’re all obediently stupid and eager to lie about truth just like racists. Grow spines, jackasses.
That aside, the topic more broadly: forged evidence is nothing new. Computer generation could lead to a new era of art. Right now very few people have access to sophisticated tools, which makes abuses fewer yet far nastier.
Right now high-quality fake evidence would be unstoppable. People who have begun to be set upon a path look for reasons that they are right, not reasons that they are wrong, so forging evidence of a sufficient evil against a person will stabilize into hostilities that people rarely blow the whistle on. In the future, that will be less tenable, and “faked evidence” defenses are going to immiserate courts. Yet the basic improbability of fakes will begin to hit from one direction as people produce tsunamis of trashy art rather than anything evil, while the general stupidity of criminals will hit from another direction as sloppy fakes meet scientific dissection. Only criminals who strike motivelessly and with skill into the general population with the intention of finding truly improbable victims will be able to make the kind of deepfakes that unleash roiling waves of chaos into the world.
Ie, it’ll be a new form of serial killing.
>>2525
That isn’t clean. Try to protect yourself while doing less than the shit your enemies do. The hard path purifies while the fast road corrupts.

As a burned asset potentially of that class (I wasn’t actually clear what blackmail was against me, lol), I’m looking forward to this, but it won’t be as total as you might think. I don’t think bored rich people actually rape babies. They just play with crazy/creepy simulations of great evil, like fake cannibalism, depraved artwork, and scenegen. That’s enough to make psychologically unstable toughs go on the warpath, so it’s enough to get blackmail hooks in. Ironically, psychologically unstable enemies are the great blackmail enabler. Deepfakes won’t tank the pedo blackmail market 100% any more than existing video manipulations did, because I believe most of the pedo blackmail market is formed of middling-low value products of tense affinities and unspoken agreements among people who don’t screech like podpeople when they see artwork depicting evil subjects, but who know that the moralistic reaction is so obligatory that moralists might kill them for not having it. If you want to see pedo-blackmail really hit zero, you have to convince people to maintain *honestly pacifistic* intolerance towards “pedophile” opponents.
Cryptographic signing doesn’t mean shit, btw. People have been able to fake video frame by frame since video was invented; deepfakes make swift and economical a class of shenanigan that never was beyond the budget of a functional intelligence agency.

One of the most important things to do contra deepfakes is to eliminate illicit civilian surveillance networks. Only if there’s a channel for the information to be generated can false evidence be passed. Many people believe “what is buried is true” so they believe lies about people from those peoples’ “friends” more than the statements of those people themselves. By the same principle they believe that illicitly recorded information is more honest than public statements. One of the most profound social threats from deepfakes is that it will enable a high class of fake evidence to be embedded into networks of people who guarantee the “integrity” of their “friends” (ie, people they hate) with secret observation so that their “friends” cannot be secretly disloyal. The lower technical barriers will equip gossips with “proof” that their worst suspicions are true. The poor victims meanwhile will face down people trying to hint-hint them into “betraying” themselves. The loyalist-inclined will even feel rejected because they’re not trusted enough to “admit” sins towards.
Ironically, as with many of the nightmares of criminality, this will fall on criminals moreso than the general public, as Joe and Samantha Rando are probably not spying on their friends, but Don Ratissimus needs to know that his bloodthirsty “friends” aren’t writing his name on their bullets. This means his opponents will be motivated to pass him fake evidence - and maybe even rig his kit to generate it. Microchips and flash drives have gotten pretty small nowadays. Rigged kit could (tactically, should) be programmed to mostly report truth and edit almost none of what transpires in its “view”. The higher your truth fraction, the more believable your lie. Double-crossers learn to speak nearly pure truth to both sides.
On the plus side, deepfakes might remove a tool of psychological abuse from the “what is buried is true” set, especially if the technology gets comprehensively suborned by criminals fighting each other.
In general, the antidote to deepfakes is the antidote to most skullduggery: don’t do it, reveal the perpetrators, reveal the victims, and live peacefully so you can’t be chained into the eternal wars of authoritarian liars.
Don’t be like thd kind of person who sees a slight uptick in a graph they aren’t watching and reacts by buying donuts, nor like the kind of person who posts abusive mockery to remind the victim that they’re at the mercy of nazis for the rest of their life, a lower slave in the hierarchy of people who are enslaved by sociopathic abusiveness.

If you think about it, aliens must have been through deepfakes already. Algorithmic video-editing is a technology that will gel together eventually even if people are only trying to maximize the quality of recording, so even the most spiritually perfect species should have hit this speedbump at some point. Unless deepfakes are The Great Filter itself, any advanced alien species will already know how we could get through with intact social structures.

I did one. It takes a fair bit of technical sophistication, python scripting against a cloud computing backend. I was able to do a shitty one for free using two days of compute time.
From what I read you can do a good one using a couple of days with a good consumer PC. Could probably bang them out quickly if you were willing to rent a real cloud compute (couple hundred a month) and developed the skills. It's certainly no challenge for a major corporation or state.

After all you can no longer prove their criminal actions. You get video evidence of Bill Clinton fucking a six year old to death? It was a deepfake and now you're in prison for slander/libel of a public figure.
Doesn't matter that it was 100% legit. You can't prove it was legit.
