GENERAL DISCUSSION THREAD

Discuss books you've read or are reading, devices you use, general discussion etc..

Compare E-readers/Tablets/Phones

I still have a Sony PRS T1, are the new devices worth an update?

I do all my reading on a nexus tablet using a library/reading app to store PDFs. It's OK I suppose but it would be nice to have a proper reader. I can't use it late at night which isn't comfy at all.

Echoing OPs question, anyone have any recommendations for a good e-reader? Preferably easy on the wallet.

Kindle is pretty neat, actually. The only downside is you can't use epub files which is quickly helped by using Calibre to convert them to .mobi.

I'm reading Meditations right now, just finished Necronomicon.

Is there a good source for audiobooks that are on the /pol/ list?

I think I may have to buy one. It's a shame their isn't a great market for them any more, there's not a lot of choice between manufacturers so prices don't get driven down.

Iv'e got Calibre and it's is really useful. If you have to do anything with e-books on a computer you should really get it.

>Is there a good source for audiobooks that are on the /pol/ list?

There was a place for some /pol/ audio books but I can't remember what was there and I can't remember if it was posted here or on /pol/. I'll try and find the link for you. Somebody posted this mega on Endchan /pdfs/.

https://mega.nz/#F!Ig0iSKJA!qZ6R-fBtinq1IBuO3QBR8A!RsEm0CTQ

It's not all /pol/ but it has Mein Kampf, Solzhenitsyn, some Orwell, Plato and Meditations.

How is Meditations so far? Whenever it's mentioned on /pol/ somebody always says it's a work of defeatism or fatalism or something to that effect. It's Stoicism right? I'm not very familiar with that.

thanks for the link this is what i was looking for. I've been trying to find Evola's stuff as it is often recommended in the /pol/ literature threads. I can't find any of it in audio.

Meditations is a good short read, Marcus Aurelius was the emporor of Rome in about 170 AD. It was a book written for himself not intended for the public. It is a diary of virtues he felt important to embrace. I've read better books, but I think the objective of a reading list like /pol/ is to become well versed in political theory and philosophy.

I'm trying to understand the Illuminati, a quest started by the pizzagate threads.

Thanks, that is a good point about becoming well versed in philosophy and such. I shall give it a read. Here's that link I mentioned. Lol unfortunately it's nowhere near as extensive as I remember it but it looks like it will be an ongoing thing. There's an email there I think so maybe you could contact him and see if he's planning on recording any Evola in the future.

>I'm trying to understand the Illuminati, a quest started by the pizzagate threads

There's a guy on Endchan who used to post a lot on /pol/ about freemasonry. He shat up the board so much he earned the name Masonnigger. Anyway, he seems pretty knowledgeable about stuff like that. I may be wrong but if I had a question about the Illuminati I'd ask him. He has his own board there now

https://endchan.xyz/horror/

Be warned though, he's pretty full on and imo illuminati stuff can sometimes become a distraction from reality and even an obsession.

using a 7th gen kindle that I got for $10 CAD at a yard sale. I've been using it for over a year and it's a champ. I've dropped it many, many times and the raised bezel keeps the screen from cracking. I'm thinking to get a paperwhite at some point since I'd like a backlight.

So I tried meditating properly for the first time this morning. I tried the other night but I was too buzzed from using the internet so I figured I'd try it in the morning just after I get up. I went to 10 minutes the first time. Then another 5. It was kinda hard to clear my mind but I think I got at least a minute of no thought. I also didn't realise how much I actually move and fidget even when sitting still. I was still a bit distracted because I'm feeling a bit unwell atm but I enjoyed it. It felt strangly good coming out of it, like waking up after a good rest. I'm going to try again later. Hopefully I'll get better with practice.

I think you're right about hallucinogens, I will continue building on meditation for now. I'd be jumping the gun if I don't give other things a try first. I do understand what your friend says about knots though, I've got plenty of them. I feel like one big knot sometimes.

Also it's interesting what you say about having several successive bodies with various functions. That guy says something similar in that book you pointed me to. "There are various types of bodies throughout the realms of Samsara...".

Not /pol/ related but the autobiography of Maynard James Keenan, the singer for Tool, Puscifer and A perfect circle. Has been a good read, I'm only on chapter 2 but if you like the music and respect the artist then I recommend you to pick it up, through the tragedy of cancer effecting his mother through the public school system and religion and the affects it has.

shilling for k2pdfopt. It reflows line wrapping while keeping the other formatting, you can then put it back into calibre to convert to another file format like .epub

I just bought a Kobo Glo HD, because fuck Jeff Bezos and Amazon. I like that it's small and can fit in my hand. Anyone got any tips for converting PDF into epub, since this board is all PDFs? I can put PDFs on the Kobo, but the better format seems to be epub for ereaders.

I use Calibre when I need read something on my laptop. It's a free e-book management program and reader but it also has a conversion system. I've not tried it yet but it looks pretty easy from a few videos I've seen. Here's a more in depth guide-

If you really want to get super-clean epub's and other e-reader type formats (mobi, azw3, etc) from PDF's, there's no better way to do it than ABBYY Finereader. It's payware, but it OCR's from the PDF to your target format extremely cleanly, more so than any calibre plugins I've tried.

It's done such a good job that since it's so easy to find all of the books I want in PDF, I just convert them with ABBYY's PDF-to-epub, put that epub in calibre, convert to azw3, then onto my kindle it goes, and it's pretty damn indistinguishable from retail, TOC and all.

The only book I've actually broken down and bought lately is Oswald Spengler's Decline of the West Vol 1 and 2 which was edited by some guy named Payne on Amazon and he was selling the kindle edition for $2, and this guy is a saint because every PDF in English of Spengler's Decline of the West is an absolute horror story mess, and this guy obviously put in a ton of work to make it damn clean. I would've paid him $20 for it.

I'm sure there's some Spengler fans here, so there's that heads up.

Way too pricey for me atm, though if I had the money and thought the trial was any good I'd buy it for the board. I really want to get a little ebook factory going here. I want to build my own book scanner and then just buy books for the board, scan them, format them and upload them.

I was in-between the Kindle Oasis and the Kobo Aura One, but I'm now heavily leaning towards the Kindle. Price isn't an issue, am I making the right choice?

I've had two Kobos and they can't read PDFs (they can, but it's very, very slow), and they're prone to locking up. Both of mine locked up and I ended up throwing them in the garbage. Kobos are absolute shite. I've been using a previous gen entry level model kindle and it's worked like a dream, but the battery is starting to give out, and I'm ordering a paperwhite this week. I'd rather a kindle paperwhite than an aura one - no second thoughts.

I'm pretty happy with my Kindle PW3. I've considered jumping to the Oasis, but there's a lot of speculation that a new Kindle is going to hit soon.

The main thing keeping me away from the Oasis is the battery life without the cover. First of all, I do a lot of reading hours on end when I'm in bed, which is what I do after my routine of work->gym->everything else. I get about 3 hours on average in falling asleep (no social life at night, no gf).

The people say that the Oasis will get about 3 hours without the cover, with brightness at about halfway or something, and wifi OFF.

Problem with that is I read with wifi on, because I read challenging books with things I'm not familiar with, and the possibility to highlight a word or phrase and have it come up on wikipedia is something I'm constantly doing, which means if I put it in airplane mode like they suggest, I'm constantly turning it on and off anyway.

If I just leave WiFi on, like I do with my PW3, then I'm probably looking at what, 2 hours without the cover before it's dead in the water? Less if I turn the brightness up more than half?

The biggest gripe is the battery life without the cover. If you do a lot of reading for hours on end, want to do it without the cover, and want WiFi on to access wikipedia or whatever, think twice about the Oasis, maybe consider the voyage or PW3.

I just can't justify paying that much for the Oasis with such shitty battery life without the cover. If you read an hour or so at a time, then you're fine. Or if you're a trendy broad in a coffee shop who wants to be seen drinking her latte while holding the kindle with her merlot wine red cover until Chad the barista offers her sausage in the bathroom, you're fine too.

For me, it's PW3 still. Double the oasis battery life without the cover and I'm in.

I'm a losing anything by using my old kindle 3/kindle keyboard? Some horrible backdoor, or maybe lacking a useful feature of newer ereaders? I consider the lack of a touchscreen to be a feature, so I'm loath to buy anything newer.

At $25 a pop, I feel the level of quality can't be beat, and the lighted case easily makes up for the lack of backlight.

A lot of it seems convincing enough, but his insistence on using petty legalism to support his claims is annoying

Just a general announcement I guess, but the jews are at it again. It's not just holohoax books anymore, amazon is banning general right wing literature now. I've also noticed a lot of the sellers I usually buy from are gone.

Turner Diaries was among the casualties, and at this rate won't be the last. Start buying hardcopies of anything you hope to have around, preferably from non pozzed sources if you can, I have a feeling this is a prelude to actual legislation.

I actually just got my Kobo Aura One in the mail a couple days ago. It seems to be very snappy for an ereader, though it is my first one. It handles pdfs fine unless I pinch to zoom, which renders unbelievably slow. Other than that, I love the thing.

Won't be testing the waterproof claim though– I can see the backlight through a little gap between the body and the charging port.

Also had an issue loading books onto it. I tried to dump about 400mb into it, but it kept unmounting. I ended up having to put the books on in smaller chunks, rebooting my computer in between failures to mount.

I do my reading on an iPad Air 2, and I love it. It's super light, super thin, various apps allow one to store and read any file format one pleases, and the "night shift" option allows one to filter the blue hues out of the screen for comfy night reading.
