I have just the right thing for a introduction into 1960s mind control. Its weird scenes in the Mountains by David Mc Gowand and Nick Bryant and deals with the creation of the Hippie movement by the US secret service community, military and its connections to organized crimes and the occult. The writing style of the book is very entertaining and you actually learn a good deal about the untold bloody history of Laurel Canyon. Among the things discussed in this book that is rarely discussed somewhere else is the Look out Mountain Laboratory, a secret film studio that sat atop of Laurel Canyon in which Stars like Marilyn Monroe and Walt Disney secretly worked on Propaganda films with a top secret clearances in their pockets of course.

The best books were by Robert Jay Lifton who examined the techniques of people like Shoko Asahara…but it's often unfeasible (resources and time required are too large for what you're after). He would choose "primed" people, people who were already broken down, looking for meaning etc. You can "force" someone into this state. So manipulating someone into reaching this state would extremely difficult. Cults generally "shop around" for people already in this state. Putting people into this state would require enormous resources and luck.

This is a really good one; it's a compendium of articles by David Felton that were published over a couple of years in the late 60's early 70's in Rolling Stone when it was still a newspaper format. The series were written in response to all the different cults that were appearing esp in the SF region as a consequence of people just shattering their minds with LSD and other consciousness altering (brainwashing) drugs. It's very readable and entertaining stuff.
