>Each exhibit pairs a Kemono Friend character with their real life counterpart. Grape-kun, a 20-year old penguin, literally fell in love with Hululu, who is a Humboldt Penguin character.

Many animals have been found to court dummies, and some even try to copulate with objects that barely look like the copulating animal itself (e.g. just look at these many videos of turtles humping shoes), but this penguin really developed a lasting emotional bound with Hululu! That reminds me of Harry Harlow’s experiment with infant monkeys where he would isolate them from other monkeys, including the parents, and the infants would bound with dummies that vaguely looked like monkeys. But Grape-kun was not isolated from other penguins and this is what makes this story amazing, because he chose Hululu over his peers.
I do hope that the zoo will not take the Hululu board away from him. Doing so is what might precisely lead him to stop eating as it’s something that tends to happen when animals are separated from those with whom they bound to.
