I have a hard time inventing non-stiff poses from imagination. Probably time for some Hogarth, people talk mad shit about his gray interpretative dancers but he seemed to work for Glen Keane

Yeah you're right, while she is supposed to be hunched down a little bit, because the contours of her deltoid and clavicle are kind of creating this big fuggin' tangent with her face it reads like shit unfortunately. One of the biggest problems is that damn extended arm. The elbows, hand and glove in general are just way off from one another

Looking fine. It's a bit flat and such, but obviously that'll get worked out over time.
Since someone already mentioned the feet, I'll go ahead and say that you need to vary line weight and width more. In general thicker lines indicate boundaries of something, objects closer to the camera, and two thinner lines intersecting.
As it stands, the unvarying line weight really puts a damper on it, where as you could easily bring it out more.

Yeah lineweight has always been a problem for me (got any decent tuts?) usually I can mask the problem by colouring it in but I want to stop masking the issue and actually start fixing it.

Because then I can get more drawings done, silly. To be honest I'm not even sure why I'm going to an atelier when I want to be an animator. I should probably just draw naked people there or take classes on color and anatomy instead of doing sight-size drawing.

That ridge you see at the top of the chest that the pectoralis muscle runs across is the clavicle. These two bones extend out to the end of the shoulder and connect with the scapula to form the shoulder girdle and the deltoids attach to the bottom of this structure. Long story short I believe you should get rid of that contour arc on the stage-left side that forms that closed shape and instead attach it to the shoulder. You can leave a bit of that contour poking out from the top of his arms to delineate the pectoralis from the deltoid, but it shouldn't envelope the pec completely.

It looks alright. I think the thing to take away learning from this one now is lighting. I'm personally not very good at it, but to me it seems like you need to really push shadows and contrast more with your shading. As well as contouring shadows more noticeably.
It looks fine though. There's certainly things that I'm picking up on, but there's nothing glaringly "jank" for lack of a better term.

Haven't been posting in these threads much. Primarily because I just sketch a bunch and do generic practice during the days. But I might as well share some of them.

>1. I'd say probably. based on how it is, the fist would be parallel to his chest, instead of facing us directly
>2. The Sternocleidomastoid is what you're after. and if the neck lines already there are supposed to be it, they're just a bit off. The Sternocleidomastoid connects from behind the ear/pit of the jaw, to the central parts of the clavicle.
>3. Nah, the cape looks like it's stuck into a pit between his pecs and top of his chest. I don't have much experience with capes that are actually woven into the costume like this, every time I have they're loose and a separate accessory. My advice here would be what I default to when I don't know, "look at actual capes and get a feel for how they work."
>4. 5. those are honestly not too big a deal even if they are. The serratus is where you need to pay attention to since it just looks like cancerous bumples right now, above 4.
>6. Only in the sense that from the waist down he isn't defined as much.
These are all minor things though. The thing I'd say that sticks out the most are the thickness of the lines on his arms. I think they're actually a good thickness, but only individually. They stick out a whole lot otherwise.
Also take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm mainly just guessing based on what you're asking, and what I think makes sense, you can see from my stuff that I'm really not much better, if not outright worse.

I think I remedied the errors. I think, that is.
1. Fixed the angle of his fist. Still not to keen on it.
2. Moved the line to where I believe the sternocleidomastoid should be.
3. Hero capes are weird, think I've fixed what was wrong with it.
4.5. Left them the way they are the now. Fixed the serratus hopefully.
6. Defined the waist down more.
What do you think?
Thanks for the help by the way.

Eh, it's fine. Don't worry about it. You've pushed the linework to the best of your abilities at this point in time, and if I were to give any more feedback, it'd be pretty useless since it's just a bunch of more minor stuff.
Focus on something new now, and try to practice the stuff you think you need to. Personally I'd say to focus on your stuff not being so "flat" so to speak. Many of the details on ol Bruce here look almost painted on.
Since you're probably going to ask me where to go from that, Proko, Vilppu, Hampton, for specific people. And perspective, construction, and life drawing, for any specific practice thing.
It's what I was told when I was starting, what I've seen people told, and what the guys I named will tell you.

I hate to hit you with this NOW but I just kind of had an epiphany on how the hand placement is actually pretty awkward; try and recreate the pose you want him to do in real life in the mirror to help you.
As-is he doesn't really have his arms folded in a "conventional" way if you know what I'm talmbout. When I fold my arms whether my hands are closed or not my hands are either tucked under or otherwise grasping my biceps for support. Right now he's basically crossing his little chicken wing arms across his chest.
Also
TANGENT ALERT
The contour of the stage-right portion of his torso goes STRAIGHT into the contour of the opening of his stage right glove. Not only that, but the glove's opening is not properly following the form of his forearm, besides.

Oh man, you have no idea how deep the puns run. Pretty much everything in the comic is one, and a lot of what I draw is wordplay too.
I'm also glad you chose the word "fun" to describe my stuff, I know you probably didn't think anything of it, but that's actually what I've always strived for my drawings to be. Even my design philosophy for characters is "if a kid wanted to, they should be able to break them down and draw them in crayon"
Can't help but feel a bit weird posting my stuff on an anonymous image board, what with the stigma both personally and culturally, but hey. I'm not ashamed I draw, and at some point I want to get my name out there. Plus you asked.

If I may make one suggestion though (and I'm making this suggestion to myself as much as I am to you), consider really finishing and polishing a piece up once in a while. You kind of remind me of myself in that I feel like you do a lot of sketchy stuff pretty much exclusively, and I imagine may have a hard time committing to really making an individual piece look good. I shouldn't cast stones from glass houses like a hypocrite but it is what it is. Honestly if the atelier I go to didn't outright force me to do things like that I wouldn't have a single finished drawing, myself.

Don't worry too much about it my man, there are quite a few legitimate pros in 4chan's /ic/ board that post dirty stuff with their real name and even their phone number just a few clicks away from it.
Putting your name and contact information out there is pretty much essential. You never know when a roving art director might really like your stuff and want to get in contact with you.

Yeah, it's a terrible habit I have, and part of why I probably haven't been building much momentum.
It's just hard for me to do it when I have comic pages I need to do, and when I'm not practicing or working on that, I can do a lot more sketches than finished pieces in the same amount of time. It's also not like they're too messy to finish and I'm using it as an excuse either.
Still, you're right. I should at least ink and shade some thing I've done lately, if only to have something presentable.

Business acumen is key. An artist must strive to identify as a business and brand, while considering the responsibilities that go with that. Make it as easy as possible to get in contact with you, and definitely try to put your best foot forward by displaying the best you can do from time to time. You want any potential employers to be well acquainted with your true power level.
It is-how they say-…trés bien!

Fampaisano Bani-chan, you need to apply yourself if you want to make it. All things considered I'm actually impressed your lines are as clean as they are (no chicken-scratch). I can see by the faded and almost imperceptible reference image on the right-hand side that your observational drawing isn't as awful as it could be, but it certainly leaves much to be desired. Watch your angles and curves, always keep negative space and other things in mind. Use those kinds of visual tools to help you. Most importantly, keep practicing, and actually practice instead of just telling yourself and us you are for fug's sake. You will have to draw "serious anatomy" much more than 5 times over a 2 year period if you want to get good, bud. I've drawn an entire book in a single day and even that isn't enough for me to break free of mediocrity (full disclosure, that's the most I've ever done in one sitting/day by far, but just use it as an example of what can be done).

Going by the reference the head's a bit too big (use the eyes to measure) or the maybe the eyes are a bit too small and the features are too high in general. Try and keep that stage-let cheek round and soft looking-that's a hard angle there. The belly fur needs to taper towards the base of the pelvis on the bottom and come up a bit higher on the top (note how it's above where the joints come out), the arms are a bit too long and the feet are a bit too big. Use other images of it to gain as much of an understanding as possible, though-I'm just going off of this image alone)

I've been stuck in my niche since, plainly, it makes me smile. But, I've also been getting an urge to expand beyond it. I still have a hard time not drawing something that's not cute in some way, in fact (Pic related, it's my most recent WIP done on whim).
I've been planning on working on my perspective skills and backgrounds, since that's well beyond my recent comfort area. Figured I'd need to take a break from the human form for bigger drawings for a while after I finish pic related.

I've been in a rut lately, and it's because lately I've been just really rushing through shit.
Was reminded of this again today, and honestly it just upsets me whenever I remember this, because everything I draw when I remember to slow the fuck down absolutely shits on everything I draw when I'm rushing.
Seriously, compare the paper Lupins, to the digital one. All I did was slow down and construct it. What stinks is I've been told this before, even in this thread too.

Thanks, I've known about the smoothness for a while, but it's not because I don't know how to apply texture. I usually just leave the extra work out if I'm drawing for fun and some of the stuff I draw porn of would look bad with a lot of texture, so I'm still looking for a good middle-ground for that.

If you're asking what program I use, Clip Studio Paint. If you're asking how I got to where I am with shading, photos and autism. Knowing the difference between lightness and value helps a lot too, especially when using colors.
Shading is really simple because you just need to think about planes and keep a consistent light source. If you're just starting out, Color and Light by James Gurney can give you a direction to head towards, but books alone won't make you better. If you want to get good, study photos. Once you get good at that, study from life too, because cameras see things a little differently from the eye.
And when I say study I don't mean just copy, I mean try to figure out how stuff works while you're drawing from a reference. Always ask yourself why things look the way they do, and try to figure out the answer. For example, "I see the highlight is in this location, but why is it there?"

I would advise against spending too much time coloring right now. Look into the concept of construction; read "Fun With a Pencil". You are drawing completely from observation from a model and it's not as awful as it could be, but if you want to improve more quickly you're going to want to learn construction and perspective.

I like the eyes.
Overall it could be worse and there are plenty of problems sure. The part in her suit jacket isn't forming relief on her body (her clothing should be following the form of her breasts and the twist of her torso more-envision a line from the pit of her neck following the form of her body down to the center of her pelvis/gooch and draw the clothing with that in mind). It appears that there is only one part of her arm coming from her shoulder/deltoid and her arm looks pretty short-though I know you're trying foreshortening which is a pretty advanced technique based on perspective. Her hands are quite small with the worst offender being the one on viewer's right and her feet are very flat looking. Keep working!

You will probably not read this one week later but…
things that are closer to the "camera" take up more space. Her hand and the bat should take up much more space of the drawing as they are reaching towards the "camera".
Her forearm reaches right into the deltoid, you kind of forgot 1/3 of the arm, the section with the bizeps.
Otherwise the proportions seem roughly right overall.
I would suggest to do more simple gestures / mannequins before coloring them (a lot of them!) and to start learn about perspective.

You know one thing I wasn't really paying attention to was her head. Her upper body and shoulders are too wide relative to the size of her head, or rather her head is a bit too small relative to the size of her body. Remember the body should be about 2 even head widths wide at the end of the clavicle (not including the arm, deltoid or acromion) and 4 heads tall from the top of the head to the base of the pelvis. I think an increase as small as 10% would probably suffice.

I'd say yes, bud. You have a lot of potential. I'm impressed with how consistent your proportions are in those instances in which you've drawn a character twice in particular. In a few years you will probably be tempted to attend art school but I would avoid that and see how far you can push yourself with cheaper online alternatives. If you're not doing it already, I'd consider getting a subscription to something like New Masters Academy to help push you even farther.

Are you only 16 tho? Then I'd assume most of what you do, the forms and all, is intuition-based? If so I think what will decide if you get really good is the level of understanding (of anatomy, light, perspective etc.) you ulitmately accumulate and what you'll relegate to your subconscious or techniques to deal with.
You're impressive as it is, some people who make actual money are worse. However they're usually "method artists" relying an array of crutches (symbol drawing and whatnot) to get through their work and if they do concept art I'd attribute it chiefly to their networking ability.

Look man, don't think I'm vying to inflate your ego here, but you should be proud of the kind of work you're making. I'm envious as fuck, being 22 and drawing like I am.
You're already pretty qualified to be a concept artist, maybe not for a big leagues AAA video game studio, but fuck man. Show your portfolio around, you'll probably get results.
As for an ego, break it. Know who you are and what you do, but don't think you're more than you are. It's hard to really say how to keep an ego in check if you're actually skilled, though, since I'm not. I guess just reevaluate how you think of others, and if it has anything to do with your self perception. You honestly strike me more as having a fragile ego, than a swollen one. Swollen egos don't exactly have a hard time brushing off people who talk negatively about them.

Yes you are. The thing about the inking brush too is that to make the most effective use out of it you have to zoom WAY in to give yourself more control.
Watch the embedded video (and try and stomach the insufferable hosts if you can)
You need to have a more refined sketch so that you have a good idea of what your final ink is supposed to look like as well. For example in this hour-long video the guy "ties down" his frame like 3 times, doing it over again but informed by his previous tie down drawing, all to get the lines perfect (he's using flash which sucks but it's still topical)

From what I've learned so far, color and lines help give an art piece shape. Your painting looks flat, even with different colors. I would say to learn fundamentals; shape and perspective being king, followed by using light and shadow to create depth (value shading), but I'm in the same boat as you are, I don't think I have the right to tell you what you should do.

It's pointless to "color and line" correctly without knowing how to draw. This isn't just a case of "needing to improve the anatomy". This is an abomination, and the sooner you can accept that the sooner you can begin to improve. Go to ctrlpaint.com/library and watch a few videos to understand the digital medium better and then read a book. You look like you're using a mouse; if you don't have a drawing tablet you should give up digital art for now and pick up a pencil and paper instead.

> I personally like some artists that have off anatomy, as long as they color skillfully enough and don't have too obtrusive of lines.
Lol no you shouldn't be, that's not how the learning process work. You should develop your skill one step at a time. Get your anatomy right before you jump into coloring technique. Coloring the right way is another level of difficulty which I find it harder than construct drawing. They are prone to a lot of color sensitivity factors and everything has to be balance. This is based from my experiance of years in drawing.

Posting this to try and illustrate a point. Even with very very simple colors, if you "buy it" mostly just comes down to values and chroma. The hue can often be all over the place and still work relatively well. If you can represent something with the proper values and chroma, it's somewhat believable even in the "color sketch".
The issue in your image is one where you consider the local color of an object rather than it's relative placement according to the palette and the environment. You have too much of a focus on hue and too little on value. You see the hair as yellow, the shirt as a light orange, under-shirt as grey, background as blue, however these colors exist in a vacuum. They are in no way related to one another or related to the environment
You've probably read and heard about this accompanied by pictures but it's useful to bring up. If you have a grey square and place it on a white background, it appears grey, however if you place it on a very very intense purple background, it's going to appear yellow/green-ish because your brain is measuring these two colors relative to each other. This is how you have to think about color, as relative. The yellow of his hair, how is that compared to the background? and so on.
An object's color isn't just affected by the relative colors but also the light surrounding it. A blue light hitting an object will cause it to look one way in the light and one way in the shadow. The shadow is not just a darker version of the "local color" but it also changes in hue and chroma because the primary light isn't hitting it and now ambient light takes over.
The pic I linked is something I'm working on. It's still in the early stages but it illustrates a lot of these things about color. It's super simplified when it comes to the colors, has a very strong ambient light that is different from the direct light, it has changes in surface color and all of this is build on the value arrangement I have set up. Doing a lot of color studies like the little pic I posted helps a lot, not only to experiment with the colors but also to see if it can "read" at a very simplified stage. Doing a lot of still lives just trying to be as exact you can be with getting the color relationships as well as value relationships will help you a lot.
If your colors don't work, probably a problem with your values. James Gurney wrote a book on color that is a very good introduction. Worth checking out.

I'm actually working alongside another artist on a project currently, and while it doesn't call for polished realism as such at the moment it's always good to know where I can find it if (or more likely when) that changes.

there's a couple of things in the circled spots but mostly the glaring flaws I see here are just the arms and musculature in general. I don't feel like you have a grasp on what muscles exist in the arm other than the most obvious ones, the biceps and the brachis and flexor carpis/palmaris. To add to that, the left bicep looks plonked on, and it shouldn't be defined that much. It's relaxed.
As for the other circled areas, your neck is a little on the short side. The tendon tensing as the head turns is correct.
For where the arms connect to the torso, it's somewhat complicated. There's chest muscles and back muscles that connect the arm on their respective sides, and between, that's where you find your pits. Hopefully these images help show what i'm talking about a little better.
The good thing about muscles is that it's pretty much just memorization. Nothing random about them at all.

Mmmmh James Gurney's book is an okay introduction. Harold Speed's book on painting has a bit on it too. Try and separate color into two segments, compositional color theory and pure naturealistic observational painting. The fact that yellow and purple are on opposite sides of the color circle doesn't help all that much when you're looking at a still life because what you see supersedes what complementary colors have to say.

After seeing Wei Feng's art because it inspired me.
I knew exactly what the picture was going to look like in my head, I can still picture it, but it just just fucking bombed when it came to colouring/shading. (Pic 3)
I think it might be something to do with the resolution size I'm drawing at, maybe?
Like the page is so big when I eventually zoom in to fix the mistakes I wind up spending too much time on them and up fucking it up.
Is there like some "standard" size and resolution artists use?
I looked up one artist in the past, and he says he works with 8000x8000px 300dpi so I just assumed that's a good starting point when it comes to drawing stuff.
Sorry lads, I know I'm probably coming across as a crybaby/whiner/faggot when asking and venting about this stuff but it's getting to the point where I'm just getting frustrated with myself to the point I don't want to draw anymore. And the thought of quitting art bugs me to no end.

I don't know shit about painting, but one thing that's always good for most crafts is plagiarism copying.
You like that Wei Feng guy and he's really good, plus he's a digital artist that uses youtube, which makes things way simpler, so copy him.
Go on youtube and search something like "Wei Feng Speeddraw". He has quite a few videos.
While he doesn't explain shit -it's a speed draw, pretty much no one does-, it's always educative to see how others work, plus you can slow down the video and see almost exactly what he's doing at a given moment.

Here's some tips for you, once you manage to draw the thumb right, the rest is pretty much easy to do. The thumb gives the base construct of drawing hand. Always start with drawing the thumb, than follows with the fingers.

Not to worry, not to worry. I do indeed mix up what I'm drawing and have fun doing so the whole time.
In general, no matter what it is I'm drawing, I always make the effort to find some way to have it challenge myself.
Even my gestures I use as a means of experimentation.
Like the other day. I hadn't realized how easily I could combine both boxes, and gesture, by just warping the cubes, based on the line of action. As well as switching from abstract vaguely spherical forms, for torso and pelvis, to cubic stuff.
And also starting to actually draw a simplified skull, for face studies, before laying the details on top.

Ignoring the major issues with the front, your biggest problem is that your setting the features too shallow. As well as disproportionate.
Try to think of the face less as this sort of blob you've got going on, and instead as a series of measurements that shift from person to person.

i dont really see it as a blob, i mostly how i see a face is based on the edge loops that i learned from topology. but can you point out what i got wrong? like how is it disproportionate? its just that i came into learning modeling awhile ago without much knowledge of anatomy fyi this is my first try at a face, also i mostly plan to base my work around kazuma kaneko work. im sorry if im asking for my hand to be held it's just that i want to get better and just get to the next step
