How do you feel about people using/stealing your art? I personally don't feel too bad about it at all, because that means they like it, and it's free advertising. Maybe they could even reach more people with my idea, and for that I'd be grateful. Is there a reason artists get extremely rustled when you steal/redistribute their art? Why do Hipsters have to feel so attached to their garbage? Am I missing something?

You're talking like you've personally made any art anyone would bother stealing which I doubt, but feel free to prove me wrong. After you've spent tens of thousands of hours devoted to making art you'll understand why someone thanklessly using an artists' work to promote their SUPERSAIYANGAMERGUY420 youtube account or make t-shirts etc. is garbage. Of course, it depends on the context. I don't know too many artists that care about people posting their work on imageboards or whatever, it's generally if it's being used in a commercial product or for a commercial purpose, though there are exceptions to even that.

For example, it's a common phenomenon on Deviantart for one user to upload the artwork of another and claim it as their own. As silly as it sounds that can have a very tangible negative impact on the original artist because any viewer of the image could be a possible future client lost because of the divided exposure the image receives.

I've gotten my work used without my consent multiple times. It's basically theft. I produce something, that thing has a copyright that belongs to me. Someone violates that copyright and generates revenue from my work, so they are earning money off of me without my permission. Even if someone would argue I'd receive exposure, they have still used my work in a non voluntary transaction and that is against the law. If someone is protected under fair use, I'm fine with that but if they break my copyright I go after them I've even had companies steal work I've made for another and in those cases it is very easy to get their lawyers involved without me having to do anything.

Maybe people have a different perspective if they're 15 and make stuff as a hobby but when you make your money off of art, you have to start treating it like a business.

It's only a serious problem if the person in question is pretending they made it or they're profiting off of your art without any compensation, but generally, it's extremely rude to take someone's hard work and use it for your own without express permission being granted.

Also, make sure you always post work under a copyright or at least use a creative commons license.

I don't live from my art, so I don't mind at all. On the contrary, I'd be more inclined to find it flattering.

Man I wish I can get good enough to have my drawing stolen. It would mean my drawings meant something to someone.

Copyright and "intellectual property" are evil fictions which take culture out of the hands of the people and turn it into an asset to be monopolized for profit by whoever can afford the best lawyers. It is the very definition of artificial scarcity.

Do I still have the picture on my computer? Then it wasn't fucking stolen.

If someone wants to redistribute my art under a different name, then that's great. It means they like it. The internet should be anonymous anyway. I certainly have no interest in acquiring a reputation online.

If someone wants to edit my art, that's even better. That's how culture has been created for the past hundred thousand years.

This is what NEETs who have never and will never do anything worthy of being stolen say. Come back when some corporation is manufacturing and selling your invention while you continue to waste away in your single mom's basement, or begins using your uncredited artwork as a logo. Of course, either would necessitate you creating something other than wind from out of your ass.

Of course you can't even conceive of any system which could allow you to live without having to exploit artificial scarcity.

I'm already in a field which depends on copyright monopolies to exist. I'm not so selfish or short-sighted as to believe that it is universally good just because it is currently profitable for me. If I could I'd tear it all down and restructure the economy so that that work is funded in other ways, I would. I'd certainly never do anything to enforce those monopolies myself.

If you want a really fucking good example of just how harmful this shit can be, look at the state of scientific publishing: http://thecostofknowledge.com/

But yes, clearly I'm just a worthless NEET because I disagree with you posting angry rants on dA about "art thieves" "stealing" your wonderful furry OCs. :^)

Whenever I see stumble upon something of mine that's been edited or adapted, I feel so damn proud and it reminds me of how I started doing shit on the internet. It's pretty swell.

Oh snap, I know some of the guys who signed.

Accessing papers is sometimes next to impossible, too, unless your university/lab/whatever has dozens of subscriptions, or you're ready to unpocket £25 for 10 pages of research, money the actual researchers probably won't even see half of.

This. I find it hilarious though, how shitty artists on deviantart steal from other shitty artists and have a giant shitfest, like, why would you ever steal something so lame? It's like breaking into someones house to steal shit from their toilet.

Sorry, but for the plurality of people, creating or inventing for the sake of the great mass of "workers" alone is far less palatable than doing so for the benefit of oneself in tandem.

I don't agree with all copyright or IP law to the letter (why should a dead man's IP rights be respected at all, let alone 70 years after their death for one poignant example) but, removing IP protectionism outright does nothing but play into the hands of existing monied interests anyway. If you want to live in a world where you can spend the next decade tirelessly inventing a device only to have it reverse-engineered, manufactured and distributed by a multinational corporation-or similarly toil for years on a game that Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo are able to distribute through their own channels without your consent or benefit it's all well and good, but luckily for everyone who hasn't swallowed cuck/pol/'s load we live in a world where IP infringement is performed on pain of litigation and a few creative workers are lucky enough to be able to make a living doing something other than compulsive labor in a communal zucchini farm as consequence.
