I'm only familiar with Voltaire's historical writings which, assuming they were meant to be taken seriously, are some of the most abysmal works of historiography I've ever read, even for their time. As a result I have quite a bit of disdain for the faggot and have avoided his other works up until now. Are his non-historical books any good and if so what are some good ones to start with? I know he was a satirist, but did write good satire or was he just the 18th century's current year man?

Why don't you just read Candide and see what you think about it?

You know what? I actually smile when I read the contes of Voltaire. Read Zadig and Candide

He is funny at times and pompous at times. His criticism of Leibniz through Pangloss is the funniest part.
