Sorry my ignorance, but:

Is it possible to have free trade without open border?

I mean, letting people exchange their products in another country without transfer themselves in it.

Yes, yes it is.

Yes. A simple analogy would be to think of a family of farmers, they cultivate, let's say corn, trade it on the market and buy other stuff, but that doesn't mean that the customers are allowed to walk into the farmer's house or on the field. Just because you trade with someone, doesn't mean they can walk in your house or vice-verse.

If I want to send a parcel to another country, I don't need to send myself to the destination with it.

Free trade of goods doesn't require open borders. Free trade of skills and human capital does.

why are you asking?

Sure it is. I know I've bought shit from Japan and the biggest reasons the prices went up was customs laws/tariffs, not transferring costs. Alibaba and Wish were founded on the idea of international trade. That's the beautiful thing about the web, OP.

Closed borders tend to lead to tariffs, but where free trade exists, soldier's boots won't.

This, but I'd argue it needs "open borders" in the sense that if I need to fix shit in a foreign country, I shouldn't need a work visa to travel over, do my job, and travel home. Borders should be private, not public entities.

BUSTED

But seriously, as an aside, the only reason for tariffs or restriction of movement of skilled persons is to grow domestic sectors of the economy in anticipation of future loss of supply/increased demand (like during wars). Borders and tariffs are completely justifiable regarding defense and changing markets.

Current tariffs, M.E. wars and especially sanctions on Russia and its pipelines represent the failure of the US government to properly invest in its own human capital and to diversify its economy and are not justified, and new trade distortions in a similar vein will certainly lead to malinvestment.

So maybe justified tariffs and borders are even better than free trade OP

we should separate state and economics
