Just look at the demographics. The largest Muslim country in the world is Indonesia - not exactly desert. Saudi Arabians make up ~300m out of 1.8b Muslims. Not even close to majority. Most Muslims are South Asian or Caucasian.

Although people discount or forget Indonesia, the vast majority of all countries in which Islam is predominant are sand land as they are located in north Africa and the middle east. Ergo most Mohammedans are likely to be sand people. More specifically most who are speaking English and/or most whom English speakers have to deal with are going to be people of the sand. Also Christians aren't sandish only by virtue of being hypocrites or poorly read. If they were devout they'd be far more sandy than any European has the right to be - as I'd reckon those African ones are.

I looked up a list of the top 10 Muslim populations in countries. Of the 10, 2 are actually part of the Sahara. Most of them are tropical or mountainous. The Indian Subcontinent on it's own takes up 3 places, and it's full of different climates.
And to answer the OP question, my ancestry is from rocky deserts but we've lived on plains for the past 500 years. We're also whiter than your average European. Take of that what you will.

Middle East isn't entirely desert, there are large parts of it which are grasslands
Turkey (one of the largest Muslim countries) is in the Middle East and it barely has any desert territory
Pakistan and Afghanistan have some desert but their terrain is much more diverse, they have valleys and mountain ranges as well.
