Moonrise is around 7am in california but the cresecent will not be visable until much later today which is shameful because all the masaajid did taraweeh last night but not a single person around the masjid claimed to have seen moon with their own eye AND mecca is still the 30th of sh3baan net some of the ppl falsely claimed they were following mecca time astaghfirallah what is happening to our umma here it is 1439 and we can't even follow basic hadith on sighting the crescenet

new month starts at the night if the moon is spotted during the daytime or do we have to spot the moon at nighttime?
if we see the crescent this moring in the west coast today does that mean first taraweeh is tonite or do we just start fasting asap right when we see the moon?

Do Muslims usually give up something like a guilty pleasure or vice in Ramadan just like Christians or Catholics do in Lent?

It's a very cool thing, your first Ramadan. I converted just before Ramadan way back in 2004 and the brothers at the mosque helped me a lot. Best advice I can give is to go to the mosque every day.

Since Ramadan for me is literally 25 min. Away, I have a problem. You see, I work as Grocery Store Cashier here in the States and well, I sell Alcoholic and Pork Products. It's a family Store and my Family, besides my mom, is not that Religious. I feel like I'm the most interested person in Islam (I've even grown my own beard) and I feel very attached to This religion. But on top of that, I always feel a sense of guilt knowing that selling/buying alcoholic beverages is Haram. So I just continuously say "astaghfurallah" Everytime a payment is done. Will this effect my Ramadan Fasting? Please note that "quitting" is The last option and it's impossible in this circumstance.

Selling alcoholic or pork based products doesn't break your fast.
Could you get someone else on the till for those products?

It's stil a sin but does not break the fast as far as I know. If you have no choice, then what do you want us to tell you? Allah s.w.t will judge based on your circumstances. Try to find another source of income.

This is where it gets complicated. I'll say it straight and direct: It's Awkward af if I just happen to randomly take turns with someone else to receive the Alcoholic product.

Asking here because the qtddtot is a bit slow (and the board in general recently probably because you are doing better things than browsing 8chan haha)
So what is the view on lesser known animals in Islam? For instance there are many words and names for "Lion" that many individuals have been named. But what about, say, other animals? Aside from swines, of course.
If I happen to live on a river named after an animal, could I take this river as my last name, seeing as I embraced Islam while living next to this river?

>But what about, say, other animals?
Some other Arabic names after animals include:
Tawuus(peacock)
'Ikrima(dove)
Fahd(cheetah)
Baaz(a type of falcon)
>could I take this river as my last name,
I think so. The only real strict rule is that the name shouldn't be something considered vile or glorifying false deities or something like that. But I don't know if last names should necessarily be changed since it's part of identifying one's lineage.

The whole point of Ramadan is to stay away from vices and worldly pleasures and get closer to Allah. We are supposed to feed our soul and not out body in this holy month.
