Which is more consistent with Islam, political activism or political quietism? Are they both legitimate? What do you think about political rallies and marches?

I personally feel that I am not entitled to have an opinion on things I don't understand which is why I lean toward quietism. I don't even read the news. I feel like it would be dishonest to take a strong stance on things I honestly know little to nothing about, but it seems like nowadays everyone is under pressure to have strong opinions on a variety of very complex issues. Are people obligated to participate in social and political struggles and debates? Is it irresponsible, maybe even cowardly, to sit on the sidelines and simply mind one's own business? I'm struggling with these questions and I don't know what their resolution is.

I think political activism is a necessary tool in making a just world. We should never be afraid to speak our peace, rebuke unjust rulers, or stand up for what we believe.

Quietism.

Look at how Abdullah ibn Umar and Abdullah ibn Abbas behaved during the early fitnas.

I think the default position is that muslims must enjoin good and forbid evil which is an active position. Included in this is having a muslim leader, or it's a natural consequence. But if a muslim leader is sinful then it's still obligatory to forbid evil by not rebelling since that will lead to greater harm.

According to the Quran, authentic hadith, sahaba, tabieen, tabitabieen and so on in Sunni Islam we obey the muslim ruler except in these cases:

1.) the ruler changes his religion.

2.) the ruler forces people to commit sins

3.) the ruler doesn’t allow the prayer (could be considered part of #2

Of course people can have individual opinions but part of Islam is submitting your desires to the deen and trusting in Allah. One dua to Allah is more powerful than all protests in history combined.

Yeah I know but I wasn't sure if OP was talking from the perspective as a muslim living in the west or in a muslim country. If legal political activism by muslims in the west can lead to anything then why not.

That might be a big “if”, bro. We are in these countries mostly for economic reasons or in the case of our afro american brothers, by force. I think we should let these christians deal with their own affairs. If something directly involves the muslim community then maybe we could protest it, but we have religious freedom here. In fact, we should be much more wary of the mob than the rulers in these countries. If a christian wants to build a wall to stop another christian from entering his country or if a christian wants a separate water fountain for another christian that isn’t our issue. Unless one of them becomes muslim in which case we either protect his dignity or tell him to stop oppressing the people.

Personal anecdote: I went to protest the Iraq invasion in DC and NYC. While cathartic I think it goes without saying it didn’t stop it.

I agree which is why I don't get involved in politics myself. From what I see it's enough for the western media to show one instance of a muslim/immigrant behaving badly to undo thousands of hours of efforts from muslims doing good.

Hussein Ibn Ali (r.a)

Zayd Ibn Ali (r.a)

Yeah, read about how Hussein’s ra “supporters” lied to him, trapped him, then abandoned him and left him for dead at the last minute.

Start here: http://www.chiite.fr/en/history_06.html

Something very similar happened to Zayd ibn Ali.

Btw

>zayd ibn ali (ra)

Why did you say radiaAllahu anhu after Zayd? He was not a sahabi….. looks like you are more focused on radical politics than basic Islamic history.

Huh? I think you might be confused.. Zayd ibn Ali was not the son of Ali ibn abi Taleb. Zayd was the son of Ali son of Hussein son of Ali.

>aleyhi salam

Don't joke about that. That is not said for other than the Prophets. Rafida say that for their Davinci code fabricated "Imama" bloodline because they believe that "Imams" are superior to all prophets besides Muhammad saws. So unless you think Ali ra is greater than Jesus son of Mary and all the other prophets then you shouldn't say that.

No, I know who they are, both pious mujahideen and martyrs.

>Don't joke about that. That is not said for other than the Prophets.

False, seems like your a bit ignorant.

Ibn Katheer said in his Tafseer (3/517):

This phrase is used a great deal by scribes who are transcribing books in which the phrase “ ‘alayhi al-salaam (upon him be peace) is used in reference to ‘Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him), to the exclusion of other Sahaabah, or the words “karrama Allaahu wajhahu (may Allaah honour his face)” are used. Although the meaning is acceptable, we should respect all the Sahaabah equally in this way, because this is a kind of veneration and honouring, and the two shaykhs [Abu Bakr and ‘Umar] and Ameer al-Mu’mineen ‘Uthmaan are more deserving of that – may Allaah be pleased with them all.

I'm sunni and I say A.S upon them

Ibn kathir and all other sunni imams say not to say that - and you take that as an excuse to say it. Donkey.

You’re not even a good fake shii troll because no shii would say (as) for Zayd. Zayd was abandoned by his “shia” because he refused to curse sahaba ra. This is not the board to come to and larp, Madison. Go back to your church and have some cheese whiz with your holy God cracker.

You don't get to ban/warn someone and then take the last word. Further, your assessment is WAY off as you've done a 24 hour ban on your fellow Vol.

We don't do the boogeyman thing here and this behavior is unacceptable. I am stripping you of Vol status.

Firstly you are calling me a mushrik for saying aleyhi salam on Imam Hussain (a.s)? Assuming I'm a ghulat rafidhy who worships Ali (a.s)? Even if ahlul sunnah allow this practice? Fear Allah.

Secondly, I am familiar with the story of Imam Zayd Ibn Ali (a.s), he is respected by both the ahlul sunnah and the zaydi shi'i branch. There is no error in taking knowledge form him or sending tasleem upon them inshallah.

And finally, this ban was uncalled for and irresponsible. Considering that I have been banned often times simply for my opinion. I'm glad the owner took action. Alhamdulillah, wa jazak Allah khayran.
