The domestic cat is a revered animal in Islam.Admired for its cleanliness as well as for being loved by the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the cat is considered "the quintessential pet" by Muslims.
In Islamic tradition, cats are admired for their cleanliness. They are thought to be ritually clean, unlike dogs, and are thus allowed to enter homes and even mosques, including Masjid al-Haram. Food sampled by cats is considered halal and water from which cats have drunk is permitted for wudu.
Conclusion: if you have a dog as a pet, you are not a good Muslim and will go to hell

One of the 4 Sunni madhabs considers dogs to be clean too.
There are things that say you can't keep dogs in houses. Asian houses are built like walled gardens with a few rooms, so you can easily keep "unclean" animals within the confines of the house. It's all about having the space to keep a dog, rather than dogs being banned outright
Besides, you can hunt animals with a dog. As long as you follow procedure the hunted animal will be halal. If dogs were forbidden that wouldn't be the case.
It's a big jump to go from "cats are considered clean" to "If you have a dog you go to hell"

T. gondii is not a foregone conclusion. It is rare in cats and, when present, tends to only affect pregnant women. It also is very rare when the litter box is kept clean and even more rare in a 100% indoor cat.
A little research goes a long way.

Cats are considered pure in all the main sects. I haven't found anything about keeping cats being a bad thing.
The Quran itself doesn't say much about dogs being bad. It mentions them once or twice offhandedly. Any rulings on keeping dogs would come from hadith and it's intepretation, and sects and schools of thought tend to differ.
I found this article while looking for info about dogs, and it seems to be pretty good: http://www.virtualmosque.com/islam-studies/faqs-and-fatwas/mans-best-friend-the-islamic-view-on-dogs/ . It only covers the main Sunni schools of thought, but it's a start.
Also I should point out that "impurity" refers to the fact that dog hair and saliva contaminates what it lands on, so you'd have to change your clothes or wash up before prayer. Animals aren't evil, and cruelty to animals is a sin. Being nice to animals still counts as a good deed, and the most commonly used example is about giving a dog water.

Interesting read. What about pigs though? They don't have a very positive image despite being of the smartest animals in the world (they were used to track truffles in the past until people used dogs). I know pork is condemned in Judaism and even Islam.

Being able to track truffles isn't intelligence, it's a sense of smell. As for the animal themselves, they're just pigs. We don't eat them, that's it. We also don't eat cats or dogs. Doesn't stop us from having them as pets.

I have dogs and cats. Dogs are definitely much better companions if you are active and interesting.
Cats are better for anti-social people who don't want much responsibility or interaction.
