Because the latter is not necessarily true. The first time I ever thought Eridan was actually bad was when it was revealed he'd been killing his planet's consorts, prior to that I related to him well enough because he didn't put up with other people except fef, who he liked. i didn't have a crush at the time, but I sympathized with him as the "cold heart warmed by romance".
Eridan suddenly planning to betray everyone and join Bec caught me of guard, even after the consort reveal because he's a highblood of course he'll be more militant, even if it's to his disadvantage.
