Oh boy, Void Linux. Such a shame it's so broken, I loved the minimal aesthetic and the lack of systemd, but the rest is questionable
-had to reinstall firefox multiple times after it broke the repository and spit out "unresolvable shlib `libvpx.so.5'" with almost every package I attempted to install
-HTML5 support on firefox was broken for quite a while, caused by either firefox rejecting the packages I installed for HTML5 or the shlib error
-no matter how much I tried, never got i3 past the default config
-high chance of make destroying anything you run it through
-so many packages I wanted weren't compatible with Void
-liked rolling release but also caused errors with anything related to audio or video
After all this, I'm thinking of distrohopping to arch

yes, it can be a mess but after distrohopping for a while i think i will go back to void.
>no matter how much I tried, never got i3 past the default config
i3 always worked just fine for me, have you used i3 on any other distro?
>high chance of make destroying anything you run it through
the repository might be not stable but other than that i can't confirm this after a year of use, could you elaborate what problems you had?
>so many packages I wanted weren't compatible with Void
you used void-musl didn't you?
the audio part is painful but i had no problems once i had it all set up.
i miss using void, i guess i dive right back into this mess of a distro when i find the time to do so

just switched to arch, a bitch to set up but at least the errors are because of my illiteracy
also i dont use i3 anymore, now use awesome

no, regular void install
but pretty much every issue i got was a pain to troubleshoot and i didnt know the cause of most of them, just luck with fixing them i guess

if you want no systemd try mxlinux, also good for custom live distro.
But if I had time, I'd dedicate it to make void great again, it is a nice down to earth distro with a very fast package manager.

I couldn't get void to respond to modem manager (terminal: nmcli) changes. I have a mobile broadband (wwan) setup on ubuntu, works great, but I wanna switch over to void relatively seamlessly. This could be because I was only running it on usb stick without proper installation, but the wifi worked just fine, so I was wondering why mobile broadband would be an issue? I was just testing it to confirm. Is there a possibility that wwan cannot be used until a full install is complete?

I don't think its related to running from an USB stick but you lack most likely some package, keep in mind that Void is really really minimal. in my experience it always was something that wasn't installed or properly configured by me.
use the Gentoo wiki to troubleshoot

The only comfy method was the terminal void-installer. And now I seem to have an even stranger issue. When I attempt to format the SSD, it will not recognize it as bootable. So I go into my BIOS, set it up as a bootable option, with the live USB being first, SSD second, and it still doesn't recognize it. And when I do make it a bootable, the laptop displays an error before it even loads the live USB.
I'm attempting with both the basic install and xfce version to make sure. But so far very little improvement. I may have some kind of BIOS or bootup glitch.

Yes, i meant the terminal installer.
The easiest way imo is
>make partitions on your ssd, using whatever partitioning tool you want to use
>boot a live usb/cd
>set up internet
>go to the void-linux website in your live usb
>open the wiki for installing on a bootabel USB-stick
>follow the wiki and install on SSD instead of USB
if you have a good internet connection this wouldn't take longer than 20minutes

My issue is more of a troubleshooting issue at the moment. I may have found the workaround in the void site. I believe it's a GRUB or bios problem. To make matters worse, as I was about to erase my usb with Darik's Boot and Nuke, it destroyed some of my ubuntu data by mistake, so now I have to reinstall ubuntu AND void, and reconfig all my i3 stuff. Fun times.

We all have to learn at some point to keep our dotfiles save.
But if you are able to boot from an live usb you should be able to install it.
Grub Should be installed on the first bootabel partition on your disc
i use sda1=swap sda2=/boot sda3=/root sda4=/home
so my first bootabel partition is sda2
Grub can only be a problen if it's installed and installing grub is one of the last things you do. which partition is meant for which mountpoint can be specified in your fstab but all of this would imply you already have installed the system and chrooted into it

I managed to get it as fa as attempting an install, then it tells me there was an error installing grub or something to that effect, so I decided, screw it, I'll attempt with a virtual machine, but I'm a total noob with those so it's a learning process. Got tired or installing, erasing, reformatting, reinstalling, etc. All my live data was getting corrupted as the void files were being dumped right back into the USB. And as usual, "disks" on ubuntu will not format or even erase a corrupted usb.
It seems my best option is to try to manual install, from scratch. But there again, so far, no way to manually select "bootable" on any disk partition, the option isn't there, even when I click "b" to toggle it. So I gotta figure that out too.
>>10041
I checked it out in the virtual machine, I like the basic initial setup a lot better than void's, but void uses xbps and runit, and those are what I'm after, it's a performance thing mostly. I may consider clover or something like it if I can't figure this out.

What format is your /boot partition?
You basically install it from scratch if you use the method mentioned above.
you don't have to mark it as bootabel, you can partion your ssd in your ubuntu, boot the live usb, mount your ssd
#mount /dev/sd*3 /mnt/void (root partition)
mkdir /mnt/void/home
mkdir /mnt/void/boot
#mount /dev/sd*1 /mnt/void/boot
#mount /dev/sd*2 /mnt/void/home
#swapon /dev/sd*1
And then you can start to installing

I managed to get it almost fully installed via VM last night, I think my problem was a swap issue, I may have configured that incorrectly. When I removed swap and simply wrote in boot and /, it installed without a problem. But I will keep you method in mind as a backup, I appreciate it.

Oh and no, by "from scratch" I mean compiling all the interfacing apps you prefer on your own via terminal commands without any of the visualizations. Just terminal. It's the file without xfce or lxqt or cinnamon, just the plain download, no add ons. A dude on youtube explains how.

doing it within xfce you do exactly the same, you still do everything in the terminal but you can look stuff up at the same moment. I think it's easier to have the wiki opened on the same machine.. but you can also type everything manually and use your phone for the wiki.
booth is fine imo, don't get me wrong. it's more a comfort thing to be able to drag and drop longer commands

Finally managed to install it. Now the problem is the following. This (pic related) shows up even after I configure my hard disk in the bios as the ONLY option. It will not read from the SSD. It's like it doesn't recognize it it at all. However, when I insert my other SSD and change the BIOS option to read from "USB optical drive", it immediately loads my other SSD.
I think I may need to take this in to a repair shop. Do you anons know any alternatives?

if the repair guy isn't also a sysadmin he will not be able to fix this.
just study the wiki, maybe try it without separated partitions.
the other idea i have might sound dumb but try using a dvd instead of an usb, somehow my luck with void is better from dvd, but that could also be my autism speaking so don't quote me on this

I dunno what to do anymore, I've tried every option individually, in combination, as a fast boot, normal or compatible boot..nothing seems to work. I even try the same USB optical drive option with the void SSD and it just doesn't recognize it. Well at least I know it did install it, and this time, without a GRUB issue. But maybe it's a particular version of GRUB(?) That it requires, or a specific configuration.
