So /g/, is there ANY reason for buying an Apple computer? And by that I mean an actual tower computer, not a laptop.

Or is it really just overpriced junk? Anybody with experience here?

It is overpriced junk. Install one of the hackintosh if you want the OS. There are a bunch of different ways to install now.

Bragging rights and showing everyone how wide you can stretch your asshole. The rule of thumb is, for every extra $100 you spend over the cost of a similar non-Apple build, another inch in circumference you can dilate your asshole.

I've worked with both PCs and MACs. I definitely like the interface of PCs more (it's what I grew up with), but there are definitely some things going for the MAC. The only two things that come to mind are Logic (digital audio workstation that is only available on OSX, also, fuck Pro Tools) and a certain tracker program that only supports MIDI input on OSX (don't remember the tracker, too drunk to bother looking into it). Other than that I see no logical benefit to having a MAC ecosystem. The secondary status of the system generally prohibits what programs are available for it, and the hardware is prohibitively expensive.

I guess there's the benefit for the casual consumer in that the MAC system is small enough that most viruses aren't targeted toward it, but the costs outweigh the benefits, in my opinion.

In my group of close friends I'm the only one who doesn't have an Apple computer, and I'm definitely the most computer savvy (I'm not even that computer savvy, I just know how to work Google and find information on forums).

I'm seriously considering building a hackintosh so I can experience the few benefits of running an OSX system without spending $2700 an an overpriced piece of buillshit hardware.

I'd recommend just running OSX in a VM.
Works pretty good if youve got a decent system and usually there are no compatibility issues (eg command key is windows key, f13 is pause/break)
I need to use it for uni atm and altough I do not see any reason to switch I do like the consistent interface and the fact that it comes with a bash/darwin terminal.
Also if you ever want to into OSX/iOS programming, a mac is pretty much a must.

I can't understand why.

Not for at least 10 years, when the G5 first came out.

You only got rich studios and pros buying it, so they kept increasing the price / performance ratio.

Then again, why would you ever buy a prebuilt?

Productivity is not the same thing as performance. You can get a 10 year old Power Mac filled to the gills with ram upgrades and music software and be totally productive.

Now, try the same thing with a 10 year old PC…

It used to be because the adobe suite wasn't available on PC. That changed like ten years ago, so people probably just hold on out of habit at this point. PS and Illustrator key commands are more ergonomic on PC imo

I bought an iMac for my parents for Christmas, they are technologically incompetent and my mother is familiar with all the icons due to her iPad. It cost me at least $500 more than the equivalent PC but for them it will be easier to achieve tasks and I won't be called to fix their issues.

I feel the only reason you get an apple computer is if you're totally and utterly incompetent with computers in general and just want a nice, easy solution to complete basic tasks. I don't see any reason to buy one if you have any technological capabilities as they are generally far less customisable.

WTF you talkin' bout'!? Apple hasn't made a real tower Mac in two years, and the logicboard in that thing was totally untouched since the 2009 revision. I mean, real production users clearly aren't a priority for Apple anymore: xServe gone, FCP X, QuickTime X, the iOS-ification of the OS X desktop (not that other desktops are any more inspired, thanks Metro/GNOME 3)…

If you're locked into Mac stuff from back when Apple made the best production platform beneath the IRIX/Solaris/HP-UX costed-more-than-a-Porsche range, it's still bearable. If you just can't let go, are okay with some tinkering, and need the horsepower/are cheap, go Hackintosh. Even if you escape Apple's grasp, the walls of mainframesubscription cloud software are still closing in on all other platforms, and real workstation hardware is being discontinued by all the big brands.

But okay, let's assume we're in a timewarp to back when Apple was making something competitive with brand new Skulltrail hardware, or that you're okay with upgraded 6 year-old tech.
>Buying Xeon/Opteron/FBDIMMs for ≤2-socket PCs
>Buying FirePro/Quadro outside an institutional budget
>Buying anything other than the case, PSU, & CPU from integrators like Apple outside a negotiated volume contract
>Buying an extended warranty on something you'll upgrade/depreciate long before the free one lapses

Just look at similar configs from HP, Dell, Lenovo, &c. The MSRP on easily installed components like HDDs, GPUs, monitors, and (especially) RAM are hilariously inflated for individual customers, because integrators know that resellers (Other World, MacMall, B&H, CDW…) make all their profit selling their own with new systems

>I feel the only reason you get an apple computer is if you're totally and utterly incompetent with computers in general and just want a nice, easy solution to complete basic tasks.
It can actually be used for very complex tasks such as developing software which is what I use it for. Windows doesn't provide half the things mac osx when it comes to programming (every major tool library comes preinstalled), GNU+Linux is just a hassle to setup and breaks too easily, not to mention it feels like shit using a GNU+Linux desktop.

>How much does it cost to fix MY laptop?

>about $300. You can get a 3rd party to fix it for you. We don't fix batteries anyway.

If I buy a "Macbook Air" (made in 2008) It will be about 3-4 years till something goes wrong with it and I have to take it back to the apple store. They will tell me your laptop is 10+ years old and "Vintage" and we don't fix "Vintage" why don't you buy our "Macbook air pro' for $2,000?

Don't do it Anon. Judging from that pic I doubt the Tower Computer is any better.
