How essential is this for building a computer

It's not essential. But it's cheaper than pretty much any computer component, so why risk it?

 No.2805

>>2803

I bought one 10 years ago for my first computer build. The fucking thing was about as long as the one in your pic, but still kept detaching every few minutes as I was fiddling around.

I've built three computers since then and haven't used it, and I've never had a problem. Actually, four computers.

I do live in a continental (humid) climate, and I think it's harder to generate static electricity in humid climates. I build my computers while nude and touch something I know is grounded before reaching for new components. Haven't had any problems.

So I'd say non-essential as long as you're reasonably careful and don't shuffle around on a carpeted floor in wool socks while assembling your computer.

If I sit on my concrete floor in the kitchen in my house with like 60% humidity will I be good?

 No.2809

>>2807

Probably, but as long as you're still standing on the concrete floor, you'd probably be more comfortable assembling it on the counter, unless there's some reason you can't.

I'd still recommend nudity. It will show the computer that you're unafraid.

Is it essential.

Static discharge can and will fuck with your internals in ways you may not visibly see. Any decent hardware tech knows to ground yourself with that strap and then the computer itself.

That works until you touch something other than the case or PSU.

Completely useless. Just touch your case or a radiator before building your stuff. Electrical discharges can really fuck up electronics tho, heard of a friend who fried his mobo when trying it intentionally

not "required" but not worth the risk, remember to wear fewer clothes and to touch the case/PSU before touching any sensitive components (CPU/Mobo/Memory)

I've killed components due to static before, it's a real thing.

The thing with ESD is that it does not kill components instantly anymore (they have some builtin protection), it just shortens their lifespan significantly.

Here is a nice retro video about it (1/2 hour)

You will get one free at any reputable parts seller (sometimes you have to ask). If they don't, do not buy from them: who knows how they are handling your parts? Anybody qualified to do it will know giving a free one with each order beats giving you a refund or replacement for broken kit.

Just don't wear a wool skirt over silk panties and you'll be fine touching the metal frame before touching any components or connectors. The only time I wore an anti-static wristband was when I worked on cirecuit boards with very static-sensitive components like opamps.

built a mining rig in the winter on a carpet and with my cats running around without one of these, seems fine, though sometimes when I touch the heat sink of the gpu it will cause a shock and 2 of the cards will stop working and the whole system locks up.

I believe these are unrelated, but you never know

Just remember that the static shock you can feel is waaaay more powerful than what it takes to damage components. But if you look up how charges work and get transferred there's not much to it.
