罗马人把日耳曼部落的贵族子弟送到罗马去留学，还在日耳曼部落地区建立贸易城镇，甚至还为日耳曼蛮族建起了公共浴室。结果却引发了由阿米尼乌斯率领的日耳曼部落大叛乱，所有的贸易城镇被付之一炬，罗马人想把日耳曼蛮族部落世俗化的一切努力都失败了。（今天，白左试图将原教旨穆斯林部落世俗化的努力，也遭遇了同样悲惨的失败）
