Not everyone is the same. Some of us can motivate themselves. How can you not motivate yourself to return to the gym, if you see yourself become stronger and stronger every day? Does the fact that the weights or exercises that were once a struggle or something impossible to you, are now your warm ups or your casual work out, not enough to push you further? Or seeing how you become stronger as a person, with more confidence in yourself and what you do, not motivate you?

Human body is the best machine that is ever made, and you, anons, are the ones that are in control of it. Not Brad, nor Stacy and no nigger in some video is going to do things in your place. Only you, anons, are capable of making yourselves into a better person. Make your ancestors be proud of you. Push yourselves further and keep getting /fit/ . No matter what. No excuses. That's what motivates me.

I'm always calm and relaxed when I lift. Sometimes the bloodflow makes me start laughing, but otherwise I'm totally focused on what I'm doing.

Motivation, whether its lust, anger, desire to get better, or whatever, just makes me distracted and more likely to fuck up. At the gym you need to be a machine.

Both berserker- and zen-mode work. That depends on personality a lot.

Screaming and dancing around before a lift gets you psyched for it, and tends to make you stronger. That's scientifically proven. There's a reason so many warrior tribes did it, and why violent protesters and mobs do similar things.

I used to do these things but now I'm using zen-mode. When berserker-mode works, it works great, but if you cannot get yourself that psyched, you'll probably lose all your motivation and feel like crap instead. And if, for some reason, you lose motivation during the lift, like when it is much harder than expected, then there's the risk that you'll completely lose it and fail.

That there's god-tier athletes of both styles, and some who switch regularly, shows that both work well when they do work. Sigmarsson regularly boasted during events, Kazmaier worked himself into such a frenzy that his opponent during a sumo-match left the ring in a panic, but I don't remember Shaw or Big Z making much of a noise.

The problem with motivation is that it doesn't last. It seems to me that if you can't get anything done without being motivated, then you're missing something critical. Part of being a strong person is having the discipline to do what you know needs to be done even if you aren't motivated to do it.

It's nice to have motivation, but I think it's also important to be able to get shit done when motivation isn't there. Consider reading Discipline Equals Freedom, pic related.

Berserk mode takes effort. Zen mode conserves your energy and concentrates your efforts. Better to get rid of the middle and stick to these two. Zen when you need discipline because shit is tough, and Berserk when you need to turn your 100% into 101% – and eventually, with enough berserking, you get that up to 105%, 110%, etc. (it's a trainable intensity).

Zen will keep you progressing on the growth curve, and Berserking will improve the incline of your growth curve. Just use what you need when you need it. Simple.
