Yes, there were moments of "self-reflection" and confrontation. But it was a show so as far as I remember, there was always some "resolution" to these situations.

The problem I have with whole Daria thing is that, forgive me for saying that, but I think it's viewed mostly as rick and morty for edgy teen girls. Do you know what I mean? Even today bitches pretend to have 999IQ just because they know that show and have Cobain's poster above bed. Makes me sick.

Decided to rewatch it again because of this thread, and I gotta say, Daria is legitimally dead inside and gets off on fucking with people with mind games, only smilling when she manages to do so. She isn't obsessed with her self image or feeling like a special snowflake like her friend, that is indeed an arthoe. Daria goes out of her way and pretend to be something she isn't to get away from a problem or fucking with people. She is more like a cynic envision of another cynic, than an actual doomer.

Shes cynical and dry in a way that was cool in the late 90s, and she mocks the soulless NPCs around her in a way we'd love to, but she's still playing the same game as them. Plus Daria is too well-adjusted and self-assured to be a doomer.

>maintains friendships and relationships, ending them on her own terms

She's cool, but I think the only thing separating Daria from those around her is her strong principles, rather than being hopelessly blackpilled.

I'd say the real doomer in the show is based DeMartino

DeMartino is just forever angry, he doesn't have a doomed vision of the world, he is just a one sided character for comic relief, the "eternally pissed chemistry teacher", just like the "mysandric recently divorced female teacher" one. The only teacher wich had more use, and therefore more depth in the series, is that weak soyboy that teaches literature.

She's honestly more of the alpha build for SJWs. The 90s were an angry time, people knew something was wrong but many not sure what… you had the Unabomber, the Oklahoma City Bomber, Columbine massacre, etc. You even had Ross Perot, a third party candidate almost win for the first time in US history. But a more passive-aggressive person existed, like Daria they talked about injuns and niggers and other stuff, they were disheartened because nobody was listening then.

Imagine nowadays characters like Upchuck and Kevin would be arrested and expelled for rape-thoughts, her sister Quinn would be constantly signal virtuing and her little group would be about "empowering women and people of color", and the Daria of this world will be full of glee every moment she turns on the news or gets on social media. That isn't a fucking doomer.

Imagine now we know precisely well why are we angry but we pretend to be shocked and having solidarity if someone gets shot. Instead we argue about words because some fucko heard at university that you should be positive and loving to every human in the world, and that is even more funny, that you have to have respect to every living person and be inclusive enough. Flames and plague are not enough for this brainwashed population which grew up watching these genx shows which were opposite of that.

She was a 1990s archetype, the cynical third-position alternative girl who's group was not being part of any group unbeknownst to them and loathed everything around them in a sarcastic manner which has led many other "alternative" whores into relating with her although Daria isn't (as) narcissistic and braindead due to sheerly being born 20 years earlier and not constantly being fed junk info on Web 2.0. Sometimes the show is funny but its definitely a product of its time.

I think Haller is the classic doomer, although im sure you could find older examples, depending on how strict your definition. (pic related is mandatory reading) The whole 20s lost generation was basically the first doomers, especially with cigarettes becoming popular because of the war.

But if were talking 90s doomers, I think Fight Club is the top aesthetic. Very interesting time, a sort of soft post Reagan social upheaval. I really wonder what would of happened if not for 9/11 making everyone patriotic again.

I thought Fight Club was just a phenomenon of the new millenium switch.

There were other movies with similar themes coming out around the same time:

>American Beauty featuring Kevin "sexual assaulter" Spacey

>Magnolia

THose movies all had a theme of midlife crisis or meaninglessness of modern life.

You recall correctly, anon, but if you read between the lines of the show creator (Eichler) and his writers' consistent attempts to justify the obvious, out of character nonsense that storyline was, it reeks of studio meddling to the max, like the studio was threatening them to either do the storyline or they'd cancel the show.

>>13085

She's could never be a doomer - she's too much of a poser for it. Jane, Stacy, Jodie, even fucking Sandi would all make for much better doomers than she would - they all had actual problems in their lives, unlike Daria.

>No, just redpilled to high school politics. Never saw her old enough to discover the real political redpills.

She wasn't even that redpilled to high school politics either - she was popular, had plenty of friends, and nobody bullied her whatsoever. Even the obese Goth chick called her out on it in one episode, implying the real outcasts looked at her as just another vapid thot. If anyone was redpilled to high school politics, it was Jane (the episode where she joined the track team). Honestly, Daria was an overrated show that had three good seasons, utterly fell apart when Tom was introduced, and is now about to be resurrected as a "woke" symbol for all her spiritual descendants today - the slacktivist posers who don't give a fuck because there's no incentive for them to actually do so; look at Daria's house growing up, anon - she was basically the JK Rowling of her time: everyone sucks but me, look at how enlightened I am, etc, all the while doing nothing constructive. At least Angela Chase of My So Called Life tried to stand up to the principal of her school when he cracked down on some student publication - what did Daria do when her principal sold out to the soda company? Feelings on MSCL aside, the point is that if anything, Angela Chase was far more redpilled on high school politics than Daria ever was.

>>11131

The weak soyboy isn't any better than DeMartino or Barch (the misandrist) - the show literally has no characters whatsoever, only generic stereotypes that see no real development because the writers were too busy making everyone kiss Daria's ass every episode, despite her doing nothing whatsoever. Seriously, the show is pretty much the textbook definition of wasted potential.

>>9655

>Didn't the show make a point that she was just as bad as the people she criticized? If so that flew over the roasties who thought "omg she just like me"

The show only paid lip service to this idea, because the writers were too busy pretending they were My So Called Life with the Tom storyline (at least Jordan fucking Rayanne was believable) and regulated anything interesting (Quinn literally trying to move on from being a thot being the big one) to the wayside. A fun fact is that while so many roasties will praise the show for being feminist, the show's own co-creator literally took Quinn from a strong, successful businesswoman (as her ultimate fate was if one relies on the second movie's credits sequence) and makes her a basic thot on steroids. Simply put, Daria is a completely forgettable show that probably should've been about Jane instead.

>>11128

>consistently gets good grades, implying she lives a structured life

Yeah, one she consistently whines about. Kids in literal gutters smile more than she does - she's literally got it made, anon, and yet acts like she's right there in the gutter.

>applies to and gets into a good college, implying hope for the future

Yeah, hope that somebody ELSE will do all the heavy lifting. Jodie literally calls her out on this in the soda episode. This girl couldn't even bag nuts, anon, and you think she has a good future ahead of her?

>maintains friendships and relationships, ending them on her own terms

But she's somehow an outcast - she says so herself.

>implied that she actually cares deeply for those around her despite her steely demeanor

She cares so much that she backstabbed her best friend, emotionally abuses her sister at every opportunity, shits all over her parents (who, despite their problems, at least give a shit), treats the other students as punching bags and so on; I have to conclude that anyone who actually praises Daria as a character wasn't really watching the show, because nobody who actually did would think of her as anything other than a spoiled rotten brat who needs a colonostickectomy urgently. At least Sandi had a reason to be a cunt.
