Michigan City, IN is pretty run-down but not overly so. Maybe use it as a rest stop between Chicago and Detroit? Stay north of Barker Avenue if you want to stick to the shittier side of town dominated by an equally shitty casino. But the beach is okay. Few decent local restaurants thereabouts.
