No it wasn't. It was marketed to everyone. Skate boarding was huge at the time and they used skaters to market it. Footballers to market it and everyone in between.

The only reason why Nintendo gets so much hate these days is because of the dumb as fuck censorship policies Nintendo of America had back in the SNES and N64 days, so people started seeing Nintendo as the "kiddie game" company.
The fact that Nintendo had terrible third-party support for the Gamecube and Wii made things worse, since most of the third-party games on Nintendo consoles in those days ended up getting ported to PS2, PS3, or 360, even the RE games that were supposed to be exclusives.
I find it ironically hilarious now that Nintendo is getting better third-party support for the Switch and now it's Sony and Microsoft who are the ones pushing for censorship policies.
