I've never seen any discussion of the story or quality of the animation. Any praise or positivity surrounding the show seems to be purely on the basis of its symbolic value as another tumblry show where everyone is a stronk empowered womyn or a doughy, non-threatening shitskin. As an act of pandering it succeeds. As a form of entertainment, it fails.

The design that triggered people isn't even the design that gets used. It was some kind of work-in-progress and only appears in the pilot episode when she transforms for the first time. Either that or it was way off-model. The "man shape" she does have is clearly just a realistic non-titty breastplate and not the actual shape of her body. In-show, she's got a build like a beefier Korra. She doesn't have those huge shoulders, narrow hips, or man jaw. She just has thick limbs/torso, like a woman who's put on significant muscle, a rare example of a "strong woman" who actually looks like she'd be strong.
>>1059390
I've watched it. The animation is a tier or two above what's normal for current shows. They actually bother to make the characters expressive, have visual humor, and sometimes do something clever with the composition. The story is very character-driven, and the characters are well-realized. All of them have clearly established personalities, all the conflicts between them make sense given established character traits and motivations which is more than you can say for shit like Steven Universe. The character dynamics are surprisingly realistic and because the characters are clearly established and generally sympathetic it's easy to see why they're in conflict, plus the show usually walks the characters through resolving the conflict in a healthy way that strengthens their friendship. That's pretty good material for a kids' show since (again, unlike Steven Universe) it portrays how to be a good friend. They also contrast the princesses well with the Horde, who are generally abusive and can't or won't reconcile their different personalities.
The most reasonable authority figure by far happens to be the male leader of the "Evil Horde" who at worst gets mad and punishes people for deliberately making shitty choices, unlike the women who constantly undermine the girls they supervise. He's by far the most direct at dealing with conflict, and he only comes off as "mean" when he has to put up with bullshit from his underlings being conniving shits who make things worse by hiding their mistakes. He even discusses how he's sick of this shit and when someone admits fault or gives useful criticism he listens and rewards them. He sees the good in bad situations and focuses on that, but he also has no time for bullshit. The writers even had to give him a couple "asshole" moments in the second season because they hadn't been subtle enough at making him reasonable and people liked him too much, but that's mostly him overreacting a bit when punishing characters who massively fucked up.
It's also being set up that the princesses are actually bad, since season 2 was leaning so heavily on "wow the previous She-Ra hurt the planet, wasn't she so evil???" with almost zero context (and coming from a hologram who has already given bad advice, and has an obvious bias in the situation). It would be weird not to turn that into a twist where it turned out previous She-Ra was right or at least had a point. That and some Horde members and She-Ra's horse have criticized the princesses' monarchies.
>>1059419
There's two lesbians and they are background characters. Bow has gay dads but they only show up for one episode so far, and the premise is that they were bad parents who made (wrong) assumptions about what Bow was good at or wanted to do with his life, and he felt like he had to lie to them about it to be loved. The "representation" shit is limited to most of the cast being female and the characters being more brown than the original. She-Ra (the leader) is still comically Aryan though. The most "gay" thing they've done in the show is have the princesses glow rainbow colors, which, what do you expect out of a magical girl show? All of this kind of stuff is way understated when it's even there, honestly the whole "iT's aMBiGuOUs" thing about ship-bait is probably just marketing hype. The male characters don't get shit on (the main one is usually the voice of reason). Even the butt monkey macho guy is treated nicely when he's being insecure over not having powers, and at worst people find him kind of annoying. The only guy who isn't treated fairly is a Horde member and they portray it like he's not treated fairly.

I think a lot of the praise or buzz is shilling because it's a netflix show and almost nobody's watching it. It's not because the show is bad, it's above average and obviously aspiring to follow in the footsteps of Avatar The Last Airbender. It's just that it's a netflix show on a huge pile of netflix shows that are mostly trash. It's actually pretty alright for a kids' show and given the original was a toy commercial it's better than it has any right to be.

>"look how the stupid comic relief character makes everyone role play as the retarded original characters, is OK, it was just a joke."
The original costumes are worn in the fantasy scenario presented by Bow (each character presents a different plan). Bow is consistently portrayed as one of the smartest characters in the show (behind only the gadgeteer and dark lord), usually the cool head and sole voice of reason. He's never stupid, rarely "comic relief" (never in a demeaning way), and he's almost always right. They probably picked him for the original costumes easter egg because he's the token boy and the original costumes are meant to be sexier.
If someone is marketing these characters as grrl power mary sue fantasies with loser manbaby sidekicks, they're wildly misrepresenting the show's writing. The major male characters are the least flawed to the point it's a bit weird. Even the one who's kind of a macho stereotype is still frequently useful to the missions and emotional problems.
Adora (She-Ra) is like Korra but written well. She's stubborn and rash, but those are portrayed as character flaws. She's not disrespectful. She has no romance drama (nor does the show as a whole). She treats her friends well. Her character development makes sense and doesn't reset constantly.
I half suspect that Dreamworks/Netflix are trying to catfish woketards into watching a show that teaches functional social behavior. Adora's whole character arc is about realizing she was with the wrong side, learning to be the good guy, and learning to get over the shitty behavior she used to be surrounded by.

According to the showrunners, her relationship with Catra is supposed to be ambiguous. I got almost zero romance vibes and not much ship bait from watching their interactions on the show, which is part of why I think the marketing is intentionally misleading. They act like close childhood friends turned rivals. That's it really. No particular signs of sexual attraction. The Gay Community likes to read into things, and the studios seem to be taking advantage of that for marketing purposes. If they wanted to be a big gay show that's one thing they failed at, and pretty hard. Sexuality is barely present at all.

It's not groundbreaking or anything, but it does succeed at having reasonably complex and realistic characters. There's really not much to go "REEEE SJWs!" about.
It's definitely overhyped both ways (and for stuff that's barely part of the show). For example you have people gushing over "queer relationships" because of bits like the prom episode where the characters keep swapping dance partners irrespective of gender, but it plays more like a dance number or action sequence than something personal. And the characters are dancing with each other to communicate intrigue and updates about the ongoing mission. The show's like that in general - the characters are too focused on fighting a war and keeping the team functional to bother with romance so at most it's "subtext". People reading muh queers into stuff like that are just professional blog posters desperate for material, and Netflix is happy to have the free advertising. Whatever queer bait they put in the show is pretty scant to the point it's laughable that The Gay Community thinks it's good representation. It's like reading Fellowship of the Ring as super gay.

the change from "Princess of Power" to "Princesses of Power" is intentional, there's more focus on the supporting cast, and that's a good thing.
Catra is obviously the best thing about the show, but Entrapta are pretty good also. Starting off as She'Ra's allies makes the villains a lot more interesting.
All the characters (except Bo) are probably more interesting in the revamp than in the original series. I just hope they find a way to work in Eternia / Prince Adam though I 100% understand they want to have the show stand on its own first before experimenting with anything like that.
The racemixing prop between Glimmer/Bo at least acknowledges that black guys can only get fatties, and Glimmer being a fatty actually makes a lot of sense since she can teleport everywhere instead of walking.
Mermista getting bleached by ADVENTURE also kind of balances things out.

I really dread the Netflix branding. The typical retard who watches Netflix originals is too starved for new content that they will mindlessly gobble up shit.
The Castlevania cartoon was only good in a superficial way. The writing was utter shit but most people who hate it don't care enough to elaborate why making people assume that they are just butthurt about not being 100% like the video games. Social Media paints a very skewed perspective. A good writer should avoid social media like a fucking plague. Vocal minorities, retards, hugboxes, sycophants, outrage mobs, etc.

She's one of the better ones, and it's funny how Hordak is the only reasonable authority figure. There's an odd scene in season 2 that uses literary references to compare Hordak to Alexander the Great and Entrapta to Diogenes of Sinope.
>Entrapta is messing with Hordak's shit in his private lab
>Hordak walks up and casts a shadow over her, asking what she thinks she's doing
>"Can you move? You're in my light," direct reference to the story of Alexander meeting Diogenes, which only becomes obvious given what happens next:
>Hordak then does a monologue basically quoting Alexander: "Is it not worthy of tears," he said, "that, when the number of worlds is infinite, we have not yet become lords of a single one?
It was a neat thing to include but the number of people who'd get the reference is pretty small.
