On a personal level, I think it's ok and ethical for mercy killing to exist, e.g. euthansia for the severely ill who are about to die and are in serious pain. We do this for our pets all the time, yet when it comes to our fellow man people get their panties in a knot over it.

I've also thought a lot about abortion in the case of babies/fetuses that are severely mentally retarded and/or deformed to the point where they are basically useless vegetables. I think it would be ethical to euthanize them, but I'm not sure Jesus would think of such a thing.

Does the bible say anything about this issue?

What are your thoughts?

That's murder

>That's murder

Here in Florida, the local natives would drown newborn infants in the river that were born with severe deformities or were mentally retarded.

Why should a tribe waste vital resources caring for human vegetables? They would have been a massive drain to a tribe and taken away resources from the healthy members.

Mercy killing isn't murder.

That's not relevant or an argument. Killing the innocent is murder.

Because doing so turns "every life is sacred and has equal rights" to "life is valuable only if it can reach a 21th century quality of life"(as a sidenote, that is also the reasoning for stuff like abortion).

In principle, it sounds reasonable(people should never live in constant, horrific pain), but it's reasoning goes down a path that cheapens life immensely and stalinistically.

It devalues all of our lives like >>853267 said. Also >>853263 points out that it fits the definition of homicide. Therefore it is disobedience with a lack of humility and inability to recognize one may be wrong in their ideas of what is the right thing to do. As it says in Jeremiah 17.9, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked".

But from a purely practical point, if we were to start here, where would we stop. If all it takes is someone judging that another life can be taken, and it is allowed handing out death sentences to people simply given the right set of circumstances, how do you know someone else might not think the same about you, your children, etc? As an example, what if rabbi Yitzhak Shekelwitz decides your family is wasted resources so he decides to poison your water supply, killing all of you "mercifully" (in his mind) in order to "save the environment." You see how in this story he disregarded the commandments of God because he was so sure and confident of what he thought was correct. And yes, stuff like this actually happens all the time. It's called criminal behavior.

>euthanasia for the severely ill who are about to die and are in serious pain

This is assisted suicide, which is a rejection of God's will. We "get our panties in a knot" because animals are lesser creatures, human life is intrinsically sacred.

>abort the useless vegetables

Firstly, the tests used to check for such illnesses/deformities are less than stellar, the test for down's syndrome for instance has a 50% false positive rate. Also once again, human life is intrinsically valuable and ending it in any form is murder. Not to mention, who decides what disorders are worthy of death? An overarching standard? What of the parents say? And if the parents decide, then who questions their motive and reasoning, or is simply all abortion allowed?

>Jesus wouldn't think of it

I think you've forgotten that Jesus is God in the form of a Man, He thinks of everything. That's why we have a commandment from Him: Thou shalt do no murder.

The doctors told me my son was in agony and wasn't going to live. They encouraged me to take him off life support - he wouldn't last a minute without it. He died in my arms.

That was 15 years ago, and I still cry over this. It's a terrible thing to face.

My father in law fell, hit his head and was taken to a hospital unconcious. He was kept in a coma with medication by his third wife, and she took him off life support claiming he didn't want to be resuscitated. It took him a week to die of thirst. She never even visited him, just phoned it in. She collected all that he was worth (about $1M), burned his body, and dumped the ashes. They had a rocky marriage.

Don't know where the dumb jew raving came from, but yeah, there was an argument that the next dictator might be some utilitarian or green fundie(either far-left or eco-fascist), killing people "for the greater good".

That's terrible. I think there's a legitimate distinction to be made between passive and active euthanasia when it comes to christian ethics.
