Hello everybody. I am an ethnic Assyrian Christian. I was born in the west but my family is originally from Iraq (although I also have relatives in Syria and Lebanon). We are mainly Catholic or Orthodox (my parents raised me as a Syriac rite Catholic) and the language we speak, Syriac/Assyrian, is a dialect of Aramaic very similar to the dialect of Aramaic that our Lord spoke. I don't speak it fluently but I can pray some traditional prayers in Syriac. I just thought my presence on here would be an interest to you guys, we have a very long history and we have been persecuted by the Muslim majority in many countries in the middle east. You can ask me anything (although it might take me a while to respond sorry) =3

Really cool.

The middle-eastern branches are way too overlooked, imo, and the Assyrians have a fascinating history.

Isn't Iraq traditionally Chaldean and CoE while Maronites, Syriac Catholics, and Oriental Orthodox reside in the Levant?

I am also curious as to how much Sureth and Turoyo speakers understand each other.

Well my father is from the northern part of Iraq, near Kurdistan where there are a lot of Christians, he told me the town where he was from but I forgot the name. I'd have to ask him but it's called something like Alkush I think? However my mother is originally from Baghdad. They left in the 90s along with a bunch of my other relatives on both sides of my family when Saddam Hussein was still in power.

>Also do you speak Syriac fluently?

Haha no. But here is the Lord's Prayer in Syriac:

Abun d-bashmayo

nithqadash shmokh

tithe malkuthokh

nehwe sebyonokh

aykano d-bashmayo oph bar o

hab lan lahmo d-sunqonan yowmono

washbuq lan hawbayn wahtohayn

aykano doph hnan shbaqan l-hayobayn

lo talan l-nesyuno

elo paso lan men bisho

metul d-dylokh hi malkutho

whaylo wteshbuhto

l'olam 'olmin

Amin

Chaldeans are Assyrians, my father is Chaldean and my mother in Syriac, both Catholics (although there are also Syriac Orthodox in my mother's family) and I was baptized and raised in my mother's Church.

Here's what that is supposed to sound like according to the Syrian Orthodox melody.

Here's some other video media I know of on Syriac Christianity that could perhaps be of interest to others, which I wanted to share but unfortunately this board hasn't done anything about the youtube redirects to invidio now that it has gone down. You could try pasting the rest of the links to the main youtube url.

Lastly here are the three modern Aramaic dubs of the Jesus film of which I think the Chaldaean version has the best sounding voiceover for Jesus' actor.
