A written law of the Christians is: if a Jew strike you on one cheek, turn the other also to him and do not in any way return the blow. And ch. 6, v. 27 says: "Love your enemies; do good to them who hate you bless them who curse you and pray for those who do you harm; unto him who strikes you on one cheek offer him the other. To him who takes away thy cloak do not forbid him to take thy coat also, etc." The same is found in Matthew ch. 5, v.39. But I have never seen any Christian keep this law, nor did Jesus himself behave as he taught others to do. For we find in John ch. 18, v. 22, that when someone struck him on the face, he did not turn the other cheek, but became angry on account of this one stroke and asked "Why do you strike me"? Likewise in the Acts of the Apostles, ch. 23, v. 3, we read: that when the High Priest ordered them that stood by to strike him on the mouth, Paul did not turn the other cheek; he cursed him saying "God shall smite thee thou whited wall, etc." This is contrary to your beliefs and destroys the foundation upon which your religion rests, for you boast that the law of Jesus is easy to observe. If Paul himself, who may be called the Dispenser of Jesus, could not observe the precept of Jesus, who among the others who believe in him can prove to me that he can do so?

I found that this is from something called nizzachon

Which the reformers responded to

So tl;dr, OP is quoting a 700 year old Jewish argument against Christianity. Pretty interesting.

It is easy to observe. Just shut up and take it like a doormat. That's literally the easiest thing to do. People tend not to do that because that usually perpetuates the abuse, but retaliation does take more mental and/or physical effort than zoning out and ignoring someone. Besides, the fact the literal talmud is telling us to obey matthew just just makes me more convinced in my belief that matthew is a jewish subversion.

They did not retaliate in blindness but tried to rebuke them, this is what is taught. Did you think turning the other cheek means you have to do the physical act of turning your head?

Do you have problems understanding other figures of speech? You have to work on it by socializing more, perhaps reading about language.

"And do not in any way return the blow."

"To him who takes away thy cloak do not forbid him to take thy coat also."

Don't know man, it's written like it's meant to be taken literally. How can someone interpret "And do not in any way return the blow" to "You can fight back, but don't go berserk"?

Also, it appears that Jesus sometimes followed this rule and sometimes he didn't. He prayed for forgiveness for the people who literally crucified him, but became angry at someone who simply punched him?

Jesus being crucified: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Paul being punched: "God shall smite thee thou whited wall."

And Paul is the Dispenser of Jesus.

Its called non-violent resistance nowadays.

Even the references to cheeks and carrying for a mile are jabs at roman abuses and honor systems.

Non-violent resistance is used for mass protests. I don't think Jesus over here was making rules on how to carry out protests, but on an individual level.

"To him who takes away thy cloak do not forbid him to take thy coat also."

How is this non-violent resistance?

There are many dubious paradoxes in Christ's actions, but this is not one of them. Why do you suppose he is angry?

I always understood this verse of Christ as an exhausted retorical question. Let's suppose an elementary school teacher says to the student "how can you not understand this?" with a solemn sigh and a hint of feeling exhausted - there is no anger in it, this is what compassion for the ignorant "forgive them because they do not know what they do" looks like.

I many times, rather than being angry, feel impotent and exhausted at those who commit obvious injustice. Have you ever felt this? In my view, not everyone has.

Though I think the assumption that every evil is done out of ignorance is a Socratic prejudice. I don't think it is correct, as I have many times done evil knowing what it was.

This is bait but:

Turning the other cheek means ignoring minor slights from other people. You have every right to fight back in a serious confrontation.
