Brothers, can you help brainstorm some suggestions on how to help out the community on a larger scale? Long story short, my friend and I have been given the role of trying to establish a greater presence for our church in our area via humanitarian aid/charity/etc. Problem is two-fold.

1.) We're a relatively small church, though a few members are quite wealthy and have shown to be very generous when they know it will help people.

2.) My friend and I have 0 experience in this kind of administrative position.

We already tried the obvious food banks, soup kitchens, etc. but none of them need help. Any suggestions on what our next steps should be?

So, I have a few suggestions:

1. Pray. Ask God to guide you and put on your heart where to go and how to help. My church almost got a building in a ghetto to relocate to a permanent place, they were renting prior, and we were going there weekly to evangelize. It was awesome, we prayed for people, it was great, but God didn't want us there permanently.

2. Go to the streets and help the homeless. I lived next to a university which had a homeless issue down the road. So, my friends and I would go out and talk with them. We'd humanize them, show they mattered and people cared. We'd hear their stories, we'd pray for them, and give them food. Some friends would take a cooler full of food and sandwiches to give them then pray for them. Other friends and I would invite them to eat. No joke, we once put a homeless lady on a bus back home. She couldn't have been more happy.

Now, I know you're saying you want something large scale and that'd be nice, trust me, it would, and the ambition is great, but not everything needs to start up large scale. Sometimes, building up is the way. As you hit the streets, as you do what you can, a picture may start to emerge of how these people need help in ways that they currently aren't being provided for and the answers will come to you.

Also, if you do the above, I strongly suggest trying "treasure hunting." Before you go out, pray, ask God to tell you what to look for, and usually he'll give you a sign. Keep doing it. It'll pay off. It really will.

It starts off small. Sometimes all you need to do is just start serving somewhere consistently and do such a dang good job someone notices and wants to give you more and more responsibility. I saw it in my church that we had a comittee that was so focused on planning we had more meetings about big grand plans than actually going out and serving people. Had to dip out of that and just go do my thing.

If you think giving material things such as food will establish a greater presence in the church, do not be disappointed if they all come for your charity alone.

My priest has a really sad story about this very problem, once he couldn't afford them anymore they all went away - this and the catholic church persecuted and built a big parish near the place because of him who is orthodox.

I think giving material things will bring material people. I believe talking to people on the street, as difficult as it is for shy people, is what works best - at least is what I notice from other sects.

Yeah. There was an article in Northwest Catholic that made me chuckle. it was about a Hispanic group that gave back, and it said something similar to Hispanics don't just take from the church.

I was surprised that it is such a common perception that our local Novus Ordo diocese feel the need to give an argument to refute it. It wasn't even a good argument.
