OP I don't agree with this sort of dismissiveness that Protestanism is a low tier heresy. All these people with the handwaving nonsense, what's not low tier then for you? Sedevacantism is low tier, Eastern Orthodoxy and so on and so on.
Be like St. Thomas and Iron Man their arguments, don't straw man them. Because of the internet you can look up every argument and fortunately there is a lot of information against Protestanism from the Catholic perspective that is quite good, versus other religions (Buddhism and Islam are some of the worst, literally no good info on either from a Catholic Perspective yet, well I can get into that later) (or sedevacantism for that matter, but a different story).
You have to suss out your family and figure out what approach would work the best. The whole Sola Scriptura isn't in the Bible, while true, isn't really the best way, in my opinion. I think the best approach is to say how do we know how to interpret the Bible. Would you think that St. John knew what his Gospel meant? I'm sure at least they knew what it meant for sure right? Okay and if St. John wasn't able to teach his disciples at all what it meant I mean he would have to be a really bad teacher, and so much so Jesus picked a bad person to write the Gospel, someone who can't even explain it to his top student. Well that student was St. Polycarp, and his student was St. Irenaeus and we have his writings. And he believed in the real presence. But not just him, and then you can show http://www.therealpresence.org/eucharst/father/a5.html How all these big name church leaders in the church all believed in the real presence. You can also say that all the manuscripts of the Gospels we have, don't have names on them. How do you know that the Gospel of John is John? There's no name on it? How do you know Mark is Mark? I told a Jehovah's Witness and she said no their names are in it that's why we know. Then after I kept pushing it she was like oh well you can just tell from the style that it was written by them. I'm like well who is Mark? Where is he in the Bible? "66 short books" That's all she would revert to like a parrot. So you're willing to take the names and authors of the Gospels from St.Irenaeus but everything else he's trash for?
There are lots of avenues to go with Church History but basically I would focus on the Real Presence, because that instantly puts you in Catholic or EO. Arguing about smaller doctrines doesn't really get you that far. The real presence kills everything else, and there is loads of information about it.
