just straightforward from start to finish or would you say a different order is better?

To my knowledge, the order the books are placed in what I heard called "Theological order", that is that they were placed in that order for a reason. However, you can also read it in chronological order in order to better understand the events as they unfolded. I have heard of people doing it in this order as a sort of supplemental reading rather than the primary method.

However, my knowledge of such is admittedly limited, so I suggest simply praying on how you should go about it and then heading into it. Perhaps being caught up in how you should read it is simply a roadblock to keep you from reading it just a little bit longer put in there by Satan.

Personally Id say read the New Testament first then go through and read entirely through from the Old Testament to the end

This way you'll pick up on alot of the foreshadowing and outright statements of what will happen in the future in the books of the prophets, which were written several hundred years before our Blessed Lord

I hear someone say we can decide whether or not someone goes to hell by there actions. I believe,( correct me if i'm wrong) that only GOD decides if one goes to hell or not, since He is the only one capable of making of making Just judgement. Is this a catholic position or protestant position? I've heard both claim one or the others

Both at the same time. We live a sinful life and reject God, showing by our actions that we desire hell (lack of God's presence), and then at the Last Judgement and the Particular Judgement, God ratifies the decision and allows us to have our way. Catholics have this position with little variation, Protestants have whatever.

I would simply say read the Gospels first, because you heard all about Jesus without ever reading about him first. Do away with the preconcieved notions of the Messiah, when you have come to understand his words, then the olds words make much more sense, and do the same in return for the new words.

If there is doubt remind yourself, that God never abandoned his people, that it was people who chose to abandon him. Just because you doubt, does not mean God has no faith in you.
