The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

So I’m a huge fan of 60s rock, but the musicians who made it often lived less exemplary hedonistic lifestyles and embraced weird new age satanic spirituality. I hate the idea that these people who have enriched my life might be denied access to God’s kingdom, so I’d like to pray for their souls.

Here’s what I’m wondering, ordinarily you pray for the souls of the recently departed, and usually the recently departed person is a family member or friend you knew personally. Other than that, you might just give a vague “Lord have mercy on all your departed servants.” Would it be wrong to pray for specific people who died decades ago, people who I never knew or met personally? Would it accomplish anything, or would it just be wishful thinking on my part? Is there any formula for such prayers, or is this so unheard of that nobody method of doing so has been devised?

I says classic rock stars just cause those are the specific people I’m thinking of, but I’m sure someone else on /christian/ looks up to some historical figure without being confidant that person is saved, so I think this is a worthwhile discussion to have

It would not accomplish anything, like always.

It is appointed once for man to die, and after that comes judgment.

It’s not wrong because no prayer goes to waste and God will use your prayers for the souls in purgatory if these rockstars are in hell. However it is said that when you pray for the souls in hell their suffering is alleviated just a little bit. You shouldn’t be too worried about these people if they’re in hell it’s merciful on God’s behalf.

Praying for sinners should be a staple of your prayerlife. That you seem ignorant of this suggests you need to go read your Bible more.

So which ones right? Do you have any outside church sources?

I’ve read the OT twice and the NT three times. Nowhere does it talk about praying for people you don’t know who’ve been dead for decades, at least, nowhere I remember. If you have a verse feel free to share it, don’t just call me ignorant and say I need to “read the Bible more”
