The forbidden fruit was many things, it was likely not literal (though I have nothing against a literal interpretation), but the mystics and Fathers say it was many sins, an act of raising humans to God, incitement from fallen beings (therefore there are two known falls), unauthorized ruling, possibly some sort of sexual act, and so on.
