The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

The common term for the Roman philosophers and statesmen to medieval theologians, priests, etc. is "pagan masters." The Greeks are often referred to by name, though Aristotle is given preeminence simply as "the Philosopher."

Just read some of Fr. Eckhart's sermons or the parts of the Summa Theologiæ that deal with Aristotle. Dante, even—go read Inferno. The saints overwhelmingly take a realistic and pragmatic approach to pagans and virtuous or wise non-Christians, praising them where necessary but holding fast the line between Christian and non-Christian. There are plenty of people even on this board who could learn a thing or two from that.

I think we (I'm in the West myself) might've been better off without it. I admire the Orthodox for having Plato in their anathemas. It seems like the Greeks themselves knew better than to follow their own.

> To them who undertake Greek studies not only for purposes of education but also follow after their vain opinions, and are so thoroughly convinced of their truth and validity that they shamelessly introduce them and teach them to others, sometimes secretly and sometimes openly,

>To them who of themselves refashion creation by means of mythical fabrications and accept the Platonic ideas as veritable, saying that matter, being self-subsistent, is given form by these ideas, and who thereby clearly calumniate the free will of the Creator Who brought all things into being out of non-being and Who, as Maker, established the beginning and end of all things by His authority and sovereignty,
