The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Its 9:57pm and I dunno how to spend the sabbath. I always end up watching twitch or playing video games or lurking Youtube. Do you people really read the bible the whole entire time during it?

On Monday we remember the angels, who were the first to be created by God. Most people don't actually do anything, but monks fast on Mondays.

On Wednesday we remember Judas' betrayal of Jesus and therefore we fast.

On Friday we remember the crucifixion of Jesus and therefore we fast.

On Saturday we remember the whole of the first creation, not by following the Sabbath of the Law but by praying for the dead who have entered rest and by getting prepared for communion on the next day. We specifically do not fast.

On Sunday, we remember the new creation, the resurrection of Jesus, Easter. Eucharistic liturgy is necessary on that day.

What should you do on the Sabbath? Remember what Jesus did on the Sabbath: His lying in the tomb, His rescue of those who were held in Hell, and the repose of those who have died since then. You don't need to read the Bible all day long, but you should at least prepare yourself mentally and spiritually for the eucharistic liturgy that will happen the next day, and so not dedicate too much time to secular endeavors. Maybe dedicate a part of the day to reading a Church Father, and definitely take some time to pray for the dead.

t. Orthodox so I have no clue if Catholics and Protestants do the same thing or if this even applies to you, but I hope it's not a bad suggestion at least.

Pray for the dead? Why is that so important? Plenty of embeciles who are still alive who need more prayer.

Does doing one prevent you from doing the other?

Why pray for the dead? Because it is on the Sabbath that God rested from creating the world, it is on the Sabbath that Christ rested in the tomb and rescued from Hell those who were also resting in the tomb, and the righteous who die now participate in God's rest (see Hebrews 4). Obviously we should pray for both the living and the dead as often as we can, but Saturday is a particularly good day to focus on the dead.

I went for a walk through the nearby woods today and was led a short way off the trail when I tried to watch a bird of prey. It was really neat, when I took a rest by a dried up brook and a bunch of mice came out of their holes and jumped through the dead leaves, while the sun reflected off the dew and spiderwebs in the trees. After a while I even saw two deer hopping around, which was pretty cool. First time I've seen deer in our woods since I was a child.

Anyways, what I want to say is, you could go out, watching the beauty of Gods creation, reflecting on life, or whatever. The Sababth is for resting and recreation, not performing. Fine, if the vidya does that for you, though I noticed that I get dull in the head when I play all day long, even worse if I'm just watching other people doing it for me.

>daily remember that "praying for the dead" is something out of the apocryphal books, to be more specific, II Maccabeus.

>Do you people really read the bible the whole entire time during it?

I personally don't. My sabbath typically goes like this:

<attend Mass in the morning

<relax at home for a couple hours, sometimes doing homework if I'm behind on it

<visit my parents for the afternoon and evening

<do laundry, dishes, or anything else that needs doing around the house, read the Bible a bit, and then go to sleep

I should add that I usually take a walk and enjoy nature on the sabbath as well, however Winter weather makes that far less enjoyable (everything's covered in snow, the ground is covered in ice, below freezing weather, etc.), so I haven't bothered lately. I never really did appreciate nature until I found God again and recognized the beauty of His creations.

It never hurts to read the Bible, but when I find myself having free time I pray the Rosary instead. The mysteries of the Rosary already have the New Testament in it. Saturday is the Joyful Mysteries. Give it a try! :D
