A respected English and creative writing teacher in Pennsylvania was fired on Friday from her job at the Catholic high school where she’s been employed for four years. Her transgression? Becoming pregnant while unmarried.

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/teacher-fired-catholic-school-getting-pregnant-wedlock-160848588.html

Naiad Reich was ready to start a family, and she planned the pregnancy to coincide with a June birth so she wouldn’t have to take maternity leave from her post at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School in Coal Township, Pa., according to the Daily Item. When she announced her happy news — and the clever timing — to Sister Mary Anne Bednar, though, the principal and administrator was less than impressed.

“Her response, honestly, is one that will sit with me for a very long time, because she was very displeased,” Reich told PennLive. “She said it would be a problem and she had to contact the diocese.”

By Friday, the Roman Catholic Harrisburg Diocese officials had reached a decision: Reich’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy was a violation of a morality clause in her contract. If Reich and her partner, Matt Graboski, had no plans to get married in the near future, according to ABC affiliate WNEP, she’d have to be let go.

Diocese spokesperson Rachel A. Bryson declined to address Reich’s situation specifically but confirmed the overall stance in a statement shared with Yahoo Lifestyle. It read: “The Diocese of Harrisburg is unable to comment on personnel matters. However, as outlined in our policies, every professional employee agrees to follow the teachings, doctrine, and laws of the Catholic Church as part of the hiring process.”

The diocese’s personnel code states that every employee is “expected to conduct himself or herself at all times in accordance with Catholic morality and the rules and regulations of the school and the Diocese of Harrisburg and to avoid any embarrassment or scandal to the individual school or the Diocese.”

Reich, who is not Catholic, said that even though she does not agree with the diocese’s beliefs and moral code, she understands them. She has a moral code of her own too: honesty. “I could have sat in that meeting and said, ‘Sure, I’ll get married,'” Reich told the Daily Item. “I could have saved my job. But I was honest with them. I wasn’t going to lie.” She also told Fox 8 that she and Graboski want to get married on their own terms.

Reich can appeal the decision, but she said she’s not sure whether she wants to continue rocking the boat. “This has been a lot,” she told the Daily Item. “I feel horrible for the kids and the parents who have lost their teacher midway through the year. Not being able to see them is tough; they are the ones that are hurting.” For now, she and Graboski are focused on being “extremely excited” for the “rewarding” birth of their first baby.

An online petition has since been created in Reich’s honor to try to reinstate the teacher. An anonymous petitioner writes, “An amazing teacher has been let go due to her being pregnant and unmarried. Please, all I ask is for you to stand by this strong woman as we petition that the school’s actions were entirely wrong and for her to return to her job.”

Those who launched it are seeking 1,000 signatures.

People who would deliberately seek to have a child out of wedlock, thus cursing that child with multifold increased chances of crime, prison, substance abuse, divorce, suicide, and bearing it fathering more bastards, should not be trusted to educate children, much less in a Catholic school.

She did it on purpose and, when offered the chance to make it right, decided to get married on her terms instead of God's. No remorse? No sympathy.

And? You want me tears for her? She knew the rules: teach at cathbro school, do whatever cathbros would do.

I would be more inclined to think she was fobbed-off because of other shortcomings in terms of her commitment to teaching Catholic things and this was the excuse, but whatevs

tldr; pic related

Catholic schools in the US famously attract losers and also-ran teachers. The pay tends to be less than what public schools offer, and the bennies are a joke, so unfortunately these kind of flakes are a major part of the Catholic schooling experience.

Why didn't these retards marry?

They were trying for a baby and from what I understood were living together. Why? They were even allowed to marry as she was pregnant but refused because they wanted to

>marry on our own terms

What a childish rebellion. You need to be an adult to turn children into adults, people like this shouldn't teach.

don't send your kids to any school.

I'm still in my last year at high school and there is so much sex, drugs and immorality it's hard to see how society can function. Everyone is either an atheist or "tolerant" and it will pressure dumb teens into being like them. Both my brothers have come to the point to where they are O.K. being around this immorality and even me as well. It doesn't help that 90% of my friends are atheist since I don't have classes with the redneck kids and most of them don't like me too much :(

This sums my brother and I. The Catholic schools were full when I started so I ended up in public school, but when my brother started he got into Catholic School. I was lukewarm about religion for most of my teens, where as he went to several Catholic events aimed at teenagers.

Fast forward 10 years, he's a "Juggalo" Atheist now who does drugs, has a ton of health issues, has had STDs more than once, and for 2 years, was bisexual. He always has women hanging off of him, even one stupid Catholic girl who was a virgin when she met him at 21, and lost it at 23 to him before he ditched her.

As for me, still practicing Catholic, but no longer lukewarm. I do the rosary daily, sometimes twice, attend every holy day of obligation regardless if it's not required in my country. Unfortunately, >tfw no catholic gf

Depending where you live, the Catholic schools are the worst thing for Catholic youth.

One I didn't get about the OP's text, what about the farther?

Was he aware? Were they in a relationship? If so, why weren't they together? And if not, did she get it artificially or what?
