Cyril of Jerusalem gave a homily about what the soul experiences at the hour of death, and he described the toll houses. The soul begins to rise toward Heaven but the demons are in its track, stopping it at stations that correspond to capital sins. The demons check if the soul has anything that belongs to them - sin. If the soul has indebted itself to the demons, they bring it with themselves to Hell. But a soul isn't immediately condemned as soon as it has done anything wrong - it is also aided by the virtues it has acquired, and by the prayers of the Church.

It is one theory of particular judgment that existed within the Church. Today you have autists who say it is heretical and autists who say it is dogma.

It is just a concept of what happens to soul after death based on some of the teachings of the Church fathers, some say it's not exactly correct and that's what the controvercy is all about.

Now, on the meme sphere, some dudes from other denominations tired of the shit constantly thrown to them about the countless heresies that their churches spread worked overtime to find in Orthodoxy something that would look slightly heretical in their eyes and stumble upon it and now they spam it non stop.

The important thing to remember is that it is still a theory and that the Orthodox church will never ask for money to pass you from the toll houses.
