>yfw God literally translates to Odin and the Odin tribes:

The translation for the word deus of the Latin Bible was influenced by the then current usage by the tribes for their highest deity, namely Wodan by Angles, Saxons, and Franks of north-central and western Europe, and Godan by the Lombards of south-central Europe around Rome. There are many instances where the name Godan and Wodan are contracted to God and Wod.[4] One instance is the wild hunt (a.k.a. Wodan's wild hunt) where Wod is used

Some variant forms of the name Odin such as the Lombardic Godan may point in the direction that the Lombardic form actually comes from Proto-Germanic *ǥuđánaz. Wōdanaz or Wōđinaz is the reconstructed Proto-Germanic name of a god of Germanic paganism, known as Odin in Norse mythology, Wōden in Old English, Wodan or Wotan in Old High German and Godan in the Lombardic language. Godan was shortened to God over time and was adopted/retained by the Germanic peoples of the British isles as the name of their deity, in lieu of the Latin word Deus used by the Latin speaking Christian church, after conversion to Christianity.

Proto-Germanic root geut- with the meaning "to pour" designating the tribes as "pourers of metal" or "forgers of men". The "pouring" etymology associates the name with the word god (*gudan "deity, idol"), which may be derived from the zero grade of the same root.

Dyeus/Deiwos, from which we get the latin "deus" is more akin to Tir/Tiwas according to the proto indo european linguists.

But, I don't think it really matters. When the Christians came through Europe they usurped and appropriated much of our traditional culture and bent it to suit their ends. Taking our word and using it describe their foreign "god" shouldn't come as a surprise.

Deus is more accurate to the meaning of "God" known to most people, as it originally means "Sky Father" and eventually came to just mean a deity.

I also know that using "Lord" to address Odin or Tiwaz was commonly used, then appropriated by the Church

Deus is related to both Jove (piter) and possibly Dis (pater)

it's basically the Sky Father PIE deity name like the other anon said

like he also said, in latin it became the term for "god/deity" with it's corresponding alterations for "goddess" and "gods"
