http://odinsvolk.ca/new/sacred-symbols/runes/Runes are the symbolic expressions of the cosmic mysteries of the universe, discovered by Odin during his shamanic initiation. Rune magic developed and evolved, naturally, and uniquely among the various Teutonic tribes since the late Bronze Age. Runes were widely used in divination and have been inscribed on amulets, such talismans were primarily concerned with healing, protection, victory, fertility and growth.http://www.runemaker.com/futhark/reading.shtmlThe runes all have names that were significant to the ancient Germanic tribes, Norsemen and Anglo-Saxon pagans who used them. Some were named for gods, like Ing and Tiw; some for animals and plants such as the Ox or a Birch twig; some for natural features - a lake, or hail; some for everyday objects that they used e.g. a carriage and an archer's bow; and some for timeless concepts such as joy, a gift, and humanity. The rune meanings are augmented by further interpretations for upright (right way up as shown on each of the rune meaning pages), reverse (upside down) and converse (face down) presentation, and all these meanings and interpretations are detailed in the following pages. The runes are traditionally associated with gemstones or crystals, trees, plants or herbs, colors, and the elements. Sometimes these associations are pretty obvious. For example Berkanan, The Rune of Growth and Fertility is associated with the fast-growing birch tree, its color is dark green as are birch leaves, and its element is Earth from which the tree springs.Less obvious is the herbal association with Lady's Mantle or Dewcup (Alchemilla vulgaris). But a good Herbal will tell you that Lady's Mantle is also known as "a woman's best friend" because it regulates the menstrual cycle and clears inflammations of the female organs. What better association for the rune of growth and fertility? And the association with Moonstone (also known as Wolf's Eye, Fish's Eye or Water Opal) .is due to the gem's supposed ability to promote growth and maintain a high energy level in its users. Fehu - The Rune of Wealth and Fulfilmenthttp://www.runemaker.com/futhark/fehu.shtmlThe First Rune: Fehu, Feoh, Fe, Fahttp://nrr.podbean.com/e/runic-series-fehu-feoh-fe-fa/Alternative NamesAnglo-Friesian/Germanic: Fehu
Norse (Viking): Fe
Old English: Feoh
Other Names/Spellings: Faihu, Fé, Feh, Feo
Pronunciation: Fay-who
English Letter EquivalentF as in fat
TranslationMoney, Cattle, Wealth
MeaningReward, Wealth, Nourishment
CharacteristicsRealized ambition. Good health. Wealth. Love fulfilled. Good fortune. But remember - be charitable and show compassion.
Fehu means cattle, a measure of wealth to the ancients. Today Fehu means movable wealth, such as money and possessions. It also implies the energy and hard work that leads to wealth. Fehu can mean emotional and spiritual riches, as well as money.
Personal InterpretationFehu is Frey’s rune, and he is the god of fertility, itself a form of wealth. It is a rune of unselfish abundance. Let it shine forth to lighten your path and the paths of others. You will never run out of your spiritual richness, but don’t waste it on those who will abuse it. Discernment is important.
ReverseFailed ambition. Health problems. Poverty. Love unrequited. Bad luck.
ConverseHidden reward. Undiscovered wealth. Nourishment withheld.

Norse (Viking): Ur
Old English: Ur
Other Names/Spellings: Uraz, Urs, Urur, Urus
Pronunciation: Oor-ooze
English Letter EquivalentShort U as in under, OO as in booze.
TranslationAurochs - the giant wild ox of Europe.
MeaningPhysical or mental strength, health. For a man - male virility, manhood. For a woman - fertility, femininity, womanhood.
CharacteristicsTerminations, new beginnings. An opportunity disguised as a threat. Mental agility. Physical development, mental and bodily health. Power.
Uruz means aurochs, the European wild ox that became extinct in 1627. Uruz encompasses physical strength, endurance, courage, and the raw, wild power of freedom. It includes emotional and spiritual strength, male sexual potency, and good health. It can also imply a challenge leading to a major life change.
Personal InterpretationYou have the strength within you to fulfil all your dreams, but with strength comes responsibility. Strength is not a force to wield over others, but a force to stop others exerting power over you. Use your strength to keep focused on your path and to stop yourself being outmanoeuvred. There will always be negative people, but don’t let them upset you. Master your own ego and you will succeed.
ReverseFailure to think clearly. Ill-health or lack of mental fortitude. Beware signs of weakness, or threats to your person or position.
ConverseHidden strengths must be realised. Shun apparent opportunities, the signs are deceptive.

Thurisaz - The Rune of Chaos, Evil and Temptationhttp://www.runemaker.com/futhark/thurisaz.shtmlThe Third Rune: Thurisaz, Thorn, Thurshttp://nrr.podbean.com/e/the-runic-series-thurisaz-thorn-thurs/Alternative NamesAnglo-Friesian/Germanic: Thurisaz
Norse (Viking): Thurs
Old English: Thorn
Other Names/Spellings: Thuith, Thurisa, Thurisar, Thorunisaz, Thyth
Pronunciation: Thoor-ee-sawz
English Letter EquivalentTH compound consonant as in thin, or in weather.
TranslationGiant, monster, devil. A thorn. The god Thor, or his hammer Mjöllnir.
MeaningMagical power, the forces of chaos or of evil.. Temptation. A Warning.sapphire
CharacteristicsThreats from persons of power or position. Resist temptations which offer reward through dishonesty or trickery. Heed the omen of dishonour or physical harm.
The energy of Thurisaz can be used for good or for chaos. It represents the forces of the human psyche, including anger and lust. The thorn is a symbolic weapon. It can pierce, stab or tear. But it can also be protective, like a thorny hedge. Thurisaz may also signify a stroke of luck, but is more often a warning that your luck is running out.
Personal InterpretationYou have the power within you to face anything. Fear nothing, for you have the authority to claim your destiny. Let no one deter you from your search for the truth. Spiritual authority brings power and it is up to you to use that power in an unselfish and loving way. Power can corrupt if you do not have a true and honest heart.
ReverseEvil may be overcome. An omen of good. An exhortation to proceed. The danger is slight.
ConverseThe Evil will be hidden or may appear disguised as good.

Ansuz - Odin’s Rune, the Messenger Runehttp://www.runemaker.com/futhark/ansuz.shtmlThe Fourth Rune: Ansuz, Os, Asehttp://nrr.podbean.com/e/the-fourth-rune-ansuz-os-ase/Alternative NamesAnglo-Freisian/Germanic: Ansuz
Norse (Viking): Ass
Old English: Os
Other names/spellings: Aesir, Ansur, Ansus, As, Aza, Easc, Oss
Pronunciation: Awn - sooze
English Letter EquivalentA as in hat. Long A as in harm, lawn.
TranslationA god. Odin, (in reverse Loki - messenger of the gods and a trickster)
MeaningKnowledge. Wisdom. Communication. The mouth. A message.
CharacteristicsAnsuz is primarily Odin's rune and represents communication, creativity, controlled and divine power. Spiritually, it is the rune of prophecy and revelation. It also encompasses the ideas of wisdom, knowledge, reason, and therefore of instruction and good advice. It might also refer to a test, examination, or perhaps an interview. It can mean a letter, book, paper, message or other information. Because Loki was a renowned trickster, Ansuz reversed may also portend a surprise, trick or subterfuge.
Personal InterpretationThe answers to questions are available but not yet recognized. Look for signs and confirmations which are all around. Everything has significance and appreciation of this will lead to understanding. Ensure you don't ignore the message because you don't like the content. All experience is a lesson that teaches by acknowledging the truth knowledge and wisdom will increase.
ReverseTake care not to misinterpret information. Something you read is more important than it appears. Beware pranks.
ConverseFailed communication. Lack of clarity or awareness. Hidden messages. Secrets. Information disguised. What appears to be a trick is genuine.

Norse (Viking): Reid
Old English: Rad
Other Names/Spellings: Radh, Raidha, Raidho, Raidu, Reda, Reidr, Reidh, Reidthr
Pronunciation: Rye-doh
English Letter EquivalentR as in red.
Translation: Riding, a vehicle.
MeaningA journey, arrival, departure. Union or re-union. Events concerning travel or vehicles.
CharacteristicsTravel is indicated. New friends or old friends return. Jobs connected with transport or overseas locations.
Raido can mean wheel, ride, or travel, but it also has a deeper meaning. Riding a horse includes both movement and direction. A journey can be long and arduous, requiring planning, foresight, determination, and fortitude. Raido can therefore refer to the journey of life (the wheel of life), or to a spiritual quest. Raido might also mean transport or communication, such as delivering or receiving a message.
Personal InterpretationRecognize that everything comes in cycles and that by following them you will progress quickly and efficiently. Align your lifestyle to the seasons and honor the turning of the year. Embrace hard times knowing that the harder it is now, the easier it will get in the future. Everything has its opposite, and challenges bring equal and opposite rewards.
ReverseStagnation, lack of movement or change. Isolation. Mechanical breakdown or failure to arrive. A missed deadline.

Kauno - The Rune of Fire, the Torch of Enlightenmenthttp://www.runemaker.com/futhark/kauno.shtmlThe Sixth Rune: Kenaz, Cen, Kaun, Kahttp://nrr.podbean.com/e/kenaz-cen-kaun-ka/Alternative NamesAnglo-Friesian/Germanic: Kauno
Norse (Viking): Kaunaz, Kaun
Old English: Ken, Cen
Other Names/Spellings: Chozma, Kano, Kauna, Kaunan, Kaunaz, Kenaz, Kusmas
Pronunciation: Cow-noh
English Letter EquivalentHard C as in cat. K as in king.
TranslationA firebrand or torch. In some translations, an ulcer, wound or opening. bloodstone
MeaningHeat, light, enlightenment. Possibly mistaken: burning. an opening, ulcer or injury and thus mental anguish.
CharacteristicsKauno's main significance is related to fire, light, warmth, enlightenment and knowledge. It sheds light on the path, dispels the dark shadows of ignorance, and helps us to see with true discernment. It suggests that understanding must lead to action, and light in the darkness implies spiritual illumination. Kauno also represents the natural warmth and companionship of the home fire and thus, good health.
In its rather suspect "ulcer" translation it can represent a doorway or portal leading from darkness to light. It could also be taken as a warning to beware sources of heat or light, or of physical danger. So, if you are using this interpretation, take care against accidents, treat any illness or infirmity, and resolve your mental dilemmas.
Personal InterpretationYou are coming into a new understanding of life and its meaning. New insights await, but don’t be complacent. Use this new understanding or it will be worthless. Look for ways to use your insights for the good of yourself and others. Enlightenment is replenishable. The more you use, the more knowledge you gain. Enlightenment itself is not the goal, it is just the starting point of a great adventure that will show you great wisdom and understanding if you proceed with truth and honesty.
ReverseCold, darkness, lack of knowledge or insight. For the wound-ulcer interpretation: healing, improvement in health.
ConverseBeware hidden danger. What appears to be the true path may be a false trail. Something dark or cold may conceal great energy. For the wound-ulcer interpretation: treat a minor medical condition before it worsens.

Norse (Viking): Gyfu
Old English: Gyfu
Other Names/Spellings: Gebu, Geuua, Geofu, Giba, Gifu, Gipt, Giof, Gjof
Pronunciation: Ghay-bow
English Letter EquivalentG as is good. Gh as in the CH of Scottish dialect as heard in loch, but softer.
TranslationGift
Meaning Love, partnership. Forgiveness, gift, talent, skill or ability.
CharacteristicsAsk forgiveness and it will be given. A gift, present or windfall is foretold. Discovery or development of a skill or talent. Artistic or musical ability. Show compassion. Be not afraid to declare love. Good fortune in partnerships.
Gebo - rune number 7 - is the origin of our "lucky seven" superstition. It represents a gift, whether it is a present, an attribute, a certain skill or ability. To the ancients, a gift always called for another in return. so accepting a gift places you under an obligation to the giver - the gods, destiny, another person. Gebo can also mean a partnership or union, in business or in love. Or it can mean forgiveness - perhaps the greatest gift of all - to give or to receive. Gebo is commonly used as the sign of a kiss -the symbol of affection.
Personal InterpretationA gift presents you with the choice of acceptance or rejection. If you accept you must be prepared to give in return. Everything has its price, but with spiritual gifts the cost is always worth it in the end.
You must find the balance between giving and receiving and learn to give responsibly. This means deciding when to give and who to give to as it is not appropriate to give to everyone indiscriminately.
ReverseGebo has no reverse.

Norse (Viking): Wyn
Old English: Wyn
Other Names/Spellings: Vend, Vin, Uinne, Winja, Wungo, Wunja, Wunju
Pronunciation: Vun-yoh
English Letter EquivalentW as in wax. V as in van.
TranslationJoy
MeaningHappiness, light, emotional satisfaction.
CharacteristicsUnderstanding, realisation of ambition, success in romance and good health. Partnerships flourish. New beginnings are blessed with joyfulness. Your eyes are opened to the truth.
Wunjo is linked to a reward, a feeling of goodness and satisfaction, peaceful winning, and ultimate achievement. It contains the idea of everything going well because you are in total harmony with life. Wunjo also implies close co-operation and companionship with other people, because joy is not usually a solitary emotion. When so much of life can be negative, it is important to allow Wunjo’s joy to reach into every part of your life.
Personal InterpretationHappiness is yours if you are willing to work for it. You must strive for balance and harmony in your life. Always look for solutions rather than dwell on problems. For happiness to last, it must be founded on truth and honesty. Hide from the truth and you hide from true happiness. Seek only what is good and right, and good fortune cannot fail to follow.
ReverseMisunderstanding. Ambition stalled. Romantic or partnership difficulties. Not a good time for new ventures.
ConverseThe truth is hidden from you. Success is elusive - work hard. Imagined love is false. Partnerships under strain through secretive behaviour.

Irminsulhttp://englishnews.org/news-central/irminsul.htmlIrminsul is a pure and ancient Germanic symbol. The name Irminsul is of Old Saxon origin meaning “arising pillar”, or "great pillar that supports”. The concept of Irminsul and its iconic, unique shape is found within the most ancient pure Germanic languages and history, from Sweden to Switzerland, amongst only our extraordinary Germanic folk, from Angles and Saxons to Geats and Goths alike. Irminsul is a symbol that belongs to the Germanic folk ourselves, drawn out of inspiration from our most ancient sagas and ancestral spiritual ideals encoded into the unique iconography demonstrated here. Its true meaning is illustrative, deeply spiritual and truly folkish. …

I know it symbolizes the three horns of mead Odin drank to gain his charms, but what does it mean when used day to day?
I was thinking of getting a tattoo of it, but I want to make sure that wouldn't be disrespectful or something that must be earned first. I like it not just because it means Odin, but specifically because it signifies the way he traveled in search of knowledge and power. Is there a website in plain English which states what each rune and their derivatives represent, or do you know simply from study?
Also I came across this excerpt from the SIGRDRÍFUMÁL:

have, / And on thy sword's hilt grave them;
Some on the chapes, some on the guard,

you novices I dont see a SINGLE thread or post about Alu
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alu_%28runic%29
I have spent many years studying the runes and part of that study has been to Alu but lately I have especially been meditating on it. It is widely accepted that the literal meaning of the word is Ale, but it's deeper meaning and runic symbolism is unclear. Many theories on the linked wikipedia article are proposed but I have a simpler one. Just examine what runes are used. Ansuz, Laugaz, Uruz.
"God/Aesir, Water/Leek, Aurochs/Audhumla"
I think it is a metaphor for something more mythical than simply ale, but something with no clear comparison in later Norse myth. Perhaps there is some saga I am forgetting that would make the meaning more clear.
Any thoughts?
On an unrelated note, do you guys think it should be common practice (albeit not forced) to memorize all the runes and rune poems? At least for our gothi and vitki

I know I might sound retarded, but I only just realized the symbolism of the Othala rune. Obviously I knew it meant heritage by reading it up, but I never really bothered about it too much. It's one of those things you have hidden in the back of your head until it pops in front if your eyes.
Turns out in my villages many older houses (~1750 I think) have symbols for fertility on their façades. Yep, it's Ingwaz. Sometimes mixed with a Saltire, but more importantly sometimes simply as a chain as shown in the beginning of this video, only in wood at the corners of a house:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEhR-L1_hjQ
So yeah, the Othala rune is basically a part of a chain made out of fertility, representing your place in the chain connecting you and your children with your ancestors. I felt like pointing that out.
Also because of that I think we should be very careful with use of the Odal rune with the little hooks on it's bottom. Like the one available as flag. It looks like a broken chain to me.

Yes. I don't plan on being either of those things, but I' in the process of memorizing them myself. Our faith is one that has been in a state of "stasis" for so long, none of s can afford to be ignorant about any aspect. There is no room for passiveness in Asatru as you see in other faiths.

Fug. Then I need to treat rune-making as a proper ceremony in of itself?

Does the inguz rune have characteristics of new beginnings/change (for the better)?

Far from an expert in divination but if the rune represents the god Ingwia-Fraujaz, his tribes (the Ingvaeones; the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians) gave a new beginning in the Anglo-Saxon migration. He is also a god associated with fertility which could be seen to link with new beginnings.
