 No.89283

I'm a beginner when it comes to anime & manga. I've seen some classics growing up (Ghost in the Shell, Akira), I liked Saber Marionette J, Ah! My Goddess and Blue Seed as a kid, but never bothered with anime again. A few years ago I was convinced to watch Attack on Titan and ended up hooked on the manga. Last month I watched The Rising of the Shield Hero (what's out there until now) and ended up also hooked on the manga. The last two days I've watched Konosuba and really liked it for stupid reasons. There's something really heartwarming about isekai anime, not sure if I like harem stuff or if it's just a coincidence.

I'm really starting to enjoy this stuff, and I want to explore more, but whenever I look at recommendations charts I get overwhelmed by the options. This is the main reason why so far I've only watched what's relatively popular around 8chan. How do you guys choose? I'm thinking about Boku no Hero Academia (must be popular for a reason, right?) and JoJo's bizarre adventure (seems to be some crazy random shit, but its impact is unquestionable), but most of all I want some more isekai harem comfy stuff. I'm NOT asking for recommendations, I get that's an annoying trope here. I'm asking how to discover good stuff when even the curated charts are so huge.

So how do you guys do it?

Current season: Read the descriptions of everything, watch first episode of those that sound good, drop if very shit, otherwise watch second episode, drop if meh.

Past seasons: Pick the tags I like, then proceed as above

Note that this may take some time. Plan an afternoon so you can really read everything. Also works for manga and LN.

 No.89296

One way is to start by revisiting anything you saw in the past, figuring out what from among that you liked the most, then branching out based on that. You can also just dive into new seasons by picking up anything that looks even the tiniest bit interesting, and drop anything that doesn't stick as the season goes on. A few seasons of doing that with 20+ shows at the start cut down to 5 or so you actually like enough to finish should give you a pretty good sense of what you want out of a show. Don't completely neglect older stuff you haven't heard of before but don't feel obligated to watch/like everything people say is good.

Once you get to the point you've advanced beyond these methods or rec charts, using individual series/creators you've come to like as a method of discovery works really well. This is just an example, since you mentioned GitS, you could watch other things in the series like Standalone Complex, other Shirou Masamune stuff, or other Mamoru Oshii stuff. Another method is digging into a genre directly. For isekai harems for instance you'll pretty much find one or two per season on average for the last few years. Just the last few seasons there's Shield Hero, Slime, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord, and probably something else.

 No.89310

File: e5aaebabcd136f8⋯.jpg (32.99 KB, 640x480, 4:3, mpvsnap-[Exiled-Destiny]_B….jpg)

Given the average absurdist plot 99% of anime has you can't really judge it or tell if you'll like it from a synopsis, so I tend to ignore those.

But there are some things that I really need in an anime.

>Has a cute girl

Female attraction is a form of entertainment on its own. An anime without this would be missing an entire form of entertainment that can coexist with any others (plot, characters, etc) perfectly. Thankfully that's pretty much a given in anime.

>Looks pleasing to the eye

One of the many problems in western media today is how everything must be a disgusting mess that you definitely don't want to look at. I don't want to watch an anime with the same issue. Thankfully animes with this issue are few, and generally it's not very bad when it's there. For instance everyone has a disgusting chink face in Serial Experiments Lain, but I still watched it.

I couldn't watch Robot Carnival, because everything was simply crafted to be ugly, much like western media.

>Preferrably no computer animation, but absolutely no excessive use of 3D renders.

Overlord's 2nd and 3rd season have excessive use of 3D renders, and the entire series is computer animated. Just awful. But I've watched the first 2 seasons and plan to watch the 3rd which I've already read ahead of. I wanted to have some of the wish fulfillment isekai pie, and this was the one franchise I picked for it.

Computer animation may be bad, but everything is produced with it nowadays, so it's either that or severely limiting the scope of what you can watch.

>No "moeblob" art style

Urahara for instance is exclusively moeblobs. Just terrible.

>If it's CGDCT, that it at least be about something.

Usually comedy does the trick, but if a show isn't funny, then the entire thing falls through. At least try to have other redeemable qualities. Dagashi Kashi fails terribly at this, Kokonutsu (was that even his name? I forgot) is an unfunny boring protagonist with no redeeming qualities, and then you wait for the cute girls to pop up so the show has a chance, but they just try to sell you japanese candy.

That's what I can come up with before turning the computer off to sleep at 10am at least.

https://www.livechart.me/winter-2019/tv

Check out this, read the synposis, and if you're interested JUST watch it. There's one episode coming out each week unless it gets delayed which doesn't happen often.

When I started watching anime subbed in like 2007 or 2008 I watched what looked cool in flash videos on /f/ or pown.it or z0r.

I've grown up with animu broadcasted on tv, all kinds of stuff from giant robots to magical girls etc. As long as you're a kid, you're willing to watch everything. But when you're adult, you neither have the time or the disposition to just absorb everything and viewing requires selection.

But there's a limit, which most people here have already hit: eventually you've seen everything best Japan had to offer and you're left munching the seasonal crap, looking desperately for something new. That's your cue for passing on your knowledge to others and move on. Having a thread on this might be a first and beneficial.

Want something fun and old style? Ranma, Lupin.

Want something stylish and older? Harlock, Galaxy Express.

Want the absolute masterpieces? Nausicaa, Berserk, Alita and Ghost in the Shell mangos.

>It's a discovery strategy thread.

Word of mouth is the only way to discover the good works. You can't seriously ask for a device that lets you mine the best books from the walls of a library, as if they were minerals.

What's different is that the guy is evidently not a kid anymore, but just suggesting the Top 10 Anime of All Time is not the right way to learn anime (just like watching art movies and never an action flick). Most likely banned from /a/ due to asking for recommendations. I don't think it can be done without doing so, I interpret the real need of OP as 'recommending anime to adults'.

Are you a nigger who only watched the opening or something? It has like 7 different directors and nothing even close to resembling a consistent art style. I would readily agree though that Otomo at least is a westaboo hack obsessed with making everything as ugly as possible and only ever made good anime because he had 50% of the animators in the industry and infinite budget backing him up.

Sage for off-topic.

Our friend wants an education in anime, and my point is he should receive one that is both academic and popular. It can only be done through word of mouth, as to say the guidance of a teacher: the job of teaching is more than just reading the masterpieces (the recommended lists) until they rub off on you. You have to pick a path according to the person, and pass on the experience of the layman as well.

But definitely keep watching Death Parade, I enjoyed it quite a bit, a movie was just put out too, so check that out if you like the show.

And as for your thread, like other anons said, it's just trial and error, just go through, pick a genre(s) and read a bunch of anime descriptions, if the artwork intrigues you, see what the anime is about, and if you like the sound of it, start watching it, I've done this for the past year, and it's worked plenty well for me. I've found over a hundred animes that I've loved doing this. Good luck, and happy hunting.

Firstly, if I first hear about it from Anons discussing it on 8chan, I know there's a pretty good chance I'll like it. We all have pretty similar tastes for the most part. Then, I read the synopsis. I don't do this as a gauge of quality, but rather to check for red flags. For example, I can't stand yurishit, so if I see that it's got yuri in it I don't watch it. That's pretty much my entire selection process. I'll drop it after the first two eps or so if I dislike them, but that's only happened to me two or three times.
