I don't know if I like the direction that the show is taking but it's still well done. I thought it was well-done how it was obvious from the bird's expressions that she wasn't actually going to kill Somalia even when she was apparently trying to. The only thing is I feel like the bird didn't go through the full range of emotions you would expect when she learned the guy's backstory.

This is roughly around where I dropped the manga for being boring bullshit. I was rather hoping the anime would cover more ground so I could see new material, but it seems at maximum I'll get 1 episode of that. That tends to be a really strong sentiment until the modern era and even then those feelings persist. The whole war does seem a bit forced, but at the same time, you only ever hear tales of the beginning of the war from the victors and their descendants who are highly likely to describe their enemies as evil and irrational. There's a clear psychological difference between humans and monsters, as humans under normal circumstances would find eating intelligent humanoids disturbing. The monsters however have no such misgivings with eating creatures that look exactly like witches do, or even with eating small children who they had just been fawning over moments ago. I'd bet if we saw the human side of the pre-war era, there'd probably be something about monsters eating humans because they smell and taste so good.

There's not enough story in the manga to create a season 2 as the manga is still ongoing. If they end up doing a season 2, it will end up doing a FMA by deviating from the original author's story.
So far, the story that the animals/grotesques have been spewing sound like if they were half truths as humans do hate them, but why are the grotesques hunting them and eating them without guilt?
