I recently finished watching the K-ON series (even including the ura-on specials).

It was alright. To my surprise, the most enjoyable aspect was the comedy. This is unusual for me. A lot of the gags were frequently quite funny.

Azusa was my favourite character and I honestly feel like she was the writer's intended 'actual' main character, as opposed to Yui. god I wish I had long pretty twintails hair like Azusa. God I wish I was Azusa

Production quality was solid, as one would expect. Although I can't stand the colour palette. I don't really like any form of rock (so I'm biased in this respect) but some of the songs (ie. character songs) were nice and I actually put a few on my music playing device.

Okay, having stated the above, I found the series mediocre overall. I try to ignore expectations going into anything, but despite that I couldn't help but feel mildly disappointed. K-ON was not the timeless classic I had been lead to expect. It wasn't any better than your average seasonal SOL. I am bewildered by how it has received so much praise.

For a series as long as K-ON it's amazing how little character development actually took place. Every character felt so bland and lacked any depth and nuance. This is fatal to any SOL, especially with a long episode count. Overall direction was also unremarkable and unworthy of any praise.

Consistent 6/10 and totally forgettable. It was comfy I guess.

I want to cum inside of all of them. I will agree that the show is overrated on /a/. I will also argue that your standards are probably far removed from those of the average anon who watched K-ON as it aired. Perhaps you're over-emphasizing the SOL elements that you deem important, while other anons focus mainly on the comedy of the series? I don't see many complaints, for example, about limited character development in Nichijou (though that isn't much of a SOL.)

It's good BECAUSE it didn't need character developpement to fill the space. If it manages to be good without needing you to know the past/future of the "plot", it is very good. I agree that it's overrated. A bit like NGE; meaning it's still very good.

No really, how can you have such shit taste? K-On! is literally the comfiest shit imaginable. It lacks the memespouting of Haruhi and Lucky Star, the gay shit from Yuru Yuri and it has pleasant light music. What more do you want from a SoL? This genre is like chicken soup - warm and soothing for the achey breaky soul. It doesn´t need no complex plots, no espers, no fucking wacky random nonsense, just cute girls doing cute things with soft music playing in the background.

Also, fucking watch the movie, it´s soooo good. Well, except the english voiceacting, but what can you do?

K-ON is laser-focused on slice-of-life to the exclusion of everything else. No drama, no fighting, no avant-garde animating, little to no character development and plot. But it has slice-of-life elements in spades: light-hearted comedy, wholesome and funny one-off scenes, quirky side-characters, and a fleshed out school for the story to take place in. K-ON is cute girls doing cute things and nothing else and that's why people love it.

More personally, I think that you need to be in a certain state of mind to truly appreciate K-ON. Trapped, lonely, sad, but not depressed. Being a loner underclassmen uni student or a wagecuck at a lonely workplace helps. K-ON becomes your friendship and happiness simulator. You don't self-insert as any of the Keions; you empathize with their laid-back attitude and general good demeanor from afar. Because they're living the same life as you.

If you're in a good place in life, or socializing daily, or too depressed to appreciate the joy of another then you won't find K-ON that special.
