9f3b57 No.18208 [Open thread]

I have a 95 Dodge Dakota with a 318 magnum and a 5-spd. Since its my only rig, it has to double as my daily and weekend wheeler.

After realizing buying another used vehicle would be a gamble (also there's no way in hell I can afford full coverage on a new rig), I figure I'm better off fixing the truck I have.

Current problems:

3.21 axle gears

27 spline 8.25" rear and 7.25" IFS

Hotspots on flywheel

Input shaft bearing needs replaced

Plenum gasket compromised, burning oil with the fuel and causing spark knock

Fixing the transmission seems pretty straight forward as there are only OEM replacement parts but what about the rest of it? Do I buy a bare 360 block and build it for low-end? Do I use the 318 block I have?

If I'm going to swap to an aftermarket intake manifold to eliminate the plenum issue, won't I have to replace piston rings?

I can't keep it like it is and I can't get a different vehicle. But with the amount of work and money I would have to put into it in order to get it where I want it to be, there's no way I can come out of this on top financially.

tldr; what do, /o?

Gaskets are a simple fix even if you have to make yourself a gasket with RTV gasket maker if they no longer (or ever) had a replacement.

Something that makes it a lot easier is having a tube squeezer since you can better control the application.

>won't I have to replace piston rings?

Why would you have to replace piston rings by adding a new intake manifold?

If you were changing the head to one that provides higher compression or adding a super/turbo charger I could see the point in asking this, but otherwise it seems like a non-sequitur.

Also why do you need to replace the engine?

So far you've only listed transmission problems and a bad intake gasket, even if you had bad piston rings (which is the possible implication I'm getting from you saying you'd need to replace them for a manifold) that still shouldn't mean the engine needs replacing.

Now if you just want 25+ HP and dogshit gas mileage in exchange the 360 will certainly give you that.

Mechanic was telling me that with Mycarly odb programming, he (or I) can change the Adaptation and/or modify the air to fuel ratio to get much more mpg out of the car. He said that on 2019 lexus nx300h it can be simply programmed and done (no parts and work needed) and undone when warranty service is needed (or smog). Is this true?

You can get more power, better handling, quicker stops, louder exhaust, all sorts of things with aftermarket. But I sincerely doubt you can beat the autistic devotion modern carmakers have to MPG

Yeah, you can lean out your air fuel mixture. You'll get better mpg, but also worse performance, worse cold starts, worse reliability due to high temps and knocking, etc.

You really want better mpg you're better off shedding weight. An actual remap will give you negligible mpg improvements.

Why is it so hard to buy headlight fluid at auto parts stores? Every time I go in and ask the guys behind the counter for headlight fluid they just laugh and insist it doesn't exist. It doesn't seem to matter where I go, the reaction is always the same.

I just want to be able to use the antique motorcycle headlight I got from an estate sale. It looks like pic related.

Has anyone else had problems finding specialty parts or fluids. I think there was a car from the 50s that required bottle of blue milk to run. I'm sure that's next to impossible to find these days, and any leftovers from back then are probably spoiled.

Because most stores don't sell it as "Headlight Fluid", and in fact they never really have. You must be experiencing a Mandela effect of sorts. To prevent confusion, all brands agreed a while ago to sell their product as "Blinker Fluid". Valvoline for a time sold their product as "Headlamp/Blinker Fluid" (see pic related), but that was years ago. There are also vintage bottles produced by the private firm "Wilson's" (bankrupt since 1976) that used to make separate blinker/headlight fluids, but that was from the time prior to when the formula was optimized for all three lamp types to operate on the same liquid. Much like unleaded in a classic car's engine or modern motor oil, they should happily accept modern blinker fluid.

You might be interested in Ducati's "natural mineral water", as that's a more generalized lighting fluid designed for motorcycles, albeit modern ones, though like the previous point, should work on vintage headlamps just fine. You may need to pre-mix it with some Elbow Grease first however.

Still though, automobiles, much like every other thing, might have been immeasurably impacted had the Axis powers won, and not necessarily for the better. Take Japan for example.

>Japan doesn't lose

>Ergo Japan isn't poor

>Ergo Japan doesn't make cheap, small econoboxes to get back on their feet

>Ergo Japan never learns how to make reliable, robust cars

>Ergo Japan probably never makes anything that came as a result of conquering the world in the second half of the 20th century, and most likely keeps to themselves instead of forcefully branching out

Think about it. No GT-Rs, no Supras, no Evos, none of that riceburning goodness. You'd probably see the Toyota Crown or some variant thereof, but you also won't see any of their Kei cars I would imagine, since Japan would be so filthy rich they'd just combat the space problem with garage complexes.

Me and my sister regularly go to car shows during the months of March - November for the purpose of amateur photography, which we then sort and post to Flickr. The first two pics are a couple examples from last Summer. Other than us and toddlers/babies brought along for the ride, the next youngest person at these shows are typically in their early 40s, with most attending being Boomers. These are people who, aside from their determination at keeping a classic on the road, live their lives as conservatively as possible.

Last week I was followed by someone called "Anita Desitter". I checked out their page and it's a literal tranny that takes photos of firetrucks and classic cars.

This week a handful of my photos have been favorited by someone called Grady Cofer, Jr. and another who calls himself "Cricri Nikon Photography". Both of them clearly have a vested interest in cars, and most of their other faves are of beautiful women. The latter even has a fair share of tit and pussy pics.

Yet I kept looking, and found out they have a thing for transfags too. Both of them have favorited 3rd pic related. Who honestly thinks this horsefaced freak is any way physically attractive?

Hell, I even looked at /cuteboys/ catalog once to see what it was all about, and one of the biggest threads there is about cars. No doubt some of you post there too.

So please, pray tell, why are fags and fag-enablers so interested in cars or at least, car photography?

Cracked it open finally, only to find a /gore/ worthy scene. The crankshaft and connecting rod were completely bust. Guess that sitting in water for some years with no oil does a number on old parts. Will look for a replacement engine or maybe parts if they are available, but no sooner than late May.

I also found out in some instruction manuals that i manged to translate from moonrunes to human letters that it runs on 63 gasoline. Sixty-fucking-three. Not sure where i am supposed to get that. Lowest i can get here is 95. Will still try to restore the frame/wheels/brakes in the meantime. Will probably but some chink 2-stroke bike kit and jam it on there.

The other bike i will be trying to restore is a Minsk 125 from late 80s, it at least is supposed to run on 92 gasoline. It will accept 95 just fine. And the engine and wheels actualy turn, which is a good sign.

That's why they just call them Shelby now. Even though Carroll Shelby is dead and has nothing to do with the cars anymore.

Buy a hardtop or a 4th gen convertible.

Roll bars will stick out nevertheless cause the exterior line is straight.

No car equiped with natural gas tank has ever exploded even in the most severe of crashes. Those things have safety valves and enough insulation to contain an angry god, ya know.

I pulled the trigger on a '18 RF GT LE today. About 2 weeks until I pick it up from the dealer. Looking forward to it - was great fun to drive.

If you're gonna spend in upwards of 30k dollarydoos on a new Miata, why not bump up a year to a 19 with the punchier engine while you're at it?

and when will Mazda make an infotainment screen that doesn't literally stick out like someone glued a tablet to the dash?

I got ~$10k off the RRP as the dealer had it sitting there for 12 months so, I think, it was a good deal. The 'infotainment' system looks like it'd be completely in the way but actually isn't that bad when you're in there driving. I thought it was going to be annoying but I didn't get distracted by it once.

Oh I hope convertibles aren't your thing if you got the RF!

Though that deal you got plus the package is telling you've had a bargain. I believe you're in the US and as such there isn't anything else you could have gotten for that price and these specs.

Shit, not a bad deal then. I'm waiting til the first '19s come off their 2 year leases and snatch one for hopefully sub $15k, assuming the engines prove to be as reliable as the old 1.8s do long term. I'm maybe a week from rolling over 150k on my '96 and she runs like a top.

Never been a massive fan of convertibles, so the RF is just what I was after. I'm sure every now and then I'll retract the roof for shits and giggles, but it's definitely not going to be a common occurrence. From my understanding, there are only 110 Limited Edition (LE) models that were released here, so it really was a steal. It's basically the RF GT model with 17-inch BBS alloy wheels, the Brembo brake pack, Bilstein shocks with revised springs, a more aerodynamic body styling kit (which is quite modest but looks really aesthetic), a strut tower brace and Recaro seats. I'm pretty sure our LE is the RS version that Japan got.

I don't get your point, you either say that European manufacturers don't do small cars anymore and also uses the C1/108 examples, which are quite small cars. It's not smal with a "long" hood as they used to do, but at least it's small and fits in small parking spaces. The 1st gen Twingo was the roomiest small car ever built and that one was the peak small car. Not tiny, kei-car small, but small enough to qualify as such.

>also Czech trio with Toyota/Citroën/Peugeot/Volkswagen

<aren't you confusing the trio Aygo/C1/108 and the trio Up!/Mii/Citigo?

>aren't you confusing the trio Aygo/C1/108 and the trio Up!/Mii/Citigo?

Those three cars are all built in the same Czech plant, at least for the first gen.

And remembering how long the original Twingo lasted, yeah, that car counts too. There are quite a few others that survived into the 00s, but they're all bigger now.

Ford don't make the regular Ka anymore, instead they import the "Ka+" from India.

Opel/Vauxhall have the Adam, which is about the same size as the Fiat 500.

Same case with Renault's current Twingo.

Mercedes' A-Class ballooned into a fullsize compact long ago.

Mini said they'd make the Rocketman but have never got further than a concept.

When you remove all the badge engineering, there are just 3 vehicles European manufacturers offer that are city cars in the traditional sense - the Up, the Aygo and the Smart. Japan still makes the same Kei cars they used to but infuriatingly don't sell them outside anymore as they did in the 80s/early 90s. The Honda Brio RS for example looks far more like a "Civic Type R" than the current one does, which is now a coupe.

And crucially, the target market has changed. The current crop of subcompacts/city cars are designed for an entirely different audience than the likes of the Mini, Metro or Panda.

Cars like those 3 were made as the most basic form of automotive transportation for a fully grown family who need to get from A to B. They were built as fullsize cars but for a smaller frame. You had legroom in exchange for little in the way of safety. Cars like the 108, Up etc. are aimed for students/graduates who want to buy their first new car, and so are typically lesser equipped and have far less room in the back.

bro you're confusing

Well if I remove the badge engeneering, theres:

PSA's 108/C1

Opel's Adam (PSA now, but not at all the same car as those above)

Renault's twingo

Smart's Fortwo

VW's trio

Fiat 500

Kia Piccanto

Hyundai i10

So that's way more than 3 differents cars. And I deliberately took off the Audi A1 and the Suzuki Ignis from the list. I'm pretty sure some other small cars are sold here but I don't have them in mind.

>>17931

what you're pointing out is more a security standard change than a shift in market.
