Took my 89 golf for it's annual* MOT test this morning, it passed with only one advisory note about a minor oil leak which I was already aware of. Imaginemysurprise.jpg

Half an hour later, turned the key… nothing. The ignition barrel is kerfucked.

A bit of wire, some sparks and smoke later, and I managed to start it up and make it home. Somehow, replacement parts are still available, despite the VW parts guy telling me they're not.

Tomorrow i'll be figuring out how to fit the new one…

Any other anons have a classic car as their daily driver, and how much of a pain in the colon is it?

*14 months, because I am absent-minded. Got away with it, again.

P.S., not my golf in pic, I don't have any… mine's a 1.6CL 4+E with electric, er, nothing, faded paint and some rough bits. Yes, it's a rat, but hasn't been modded (molested) by a teenager.

Give their tools away to their subsidiaries in developing countries. VW tools go from Germany to Spain/Czeckia, then to Africa/South America/India/Asia. There they are used until they fall apart and are scrapped.

Fiat gives their tooling to Turkish/Indian/Japanese plants.

Not sure about others.

Electricucks are an even bigger scourge than I ever imagined.

This new Lotus is not a Lotus at all. It's 1600 kg and has 2000 bhp. Its body looks like a fighter jet without wings and probably sounds like one too. It has shat on just about every single one of Colin Chapman's core tenets. It's heavy, doesn't use the most of what it could have had (i.e. a more manageable 600 bhp powerplant), and definitely isn't simple.

And poor Clarkson in those last couple of minutes. That is the face of man who knows he was finally right about supercars going the way of the dodo, but he pre-emptively cried wolf so many times in his career that his word is now useless. You can just sense how depressed and defeated he is from his comments. There is no soul in a car like that Lotus. It is literally a machine.

With the advent of current electric motors being as powerful as they are, we're now in an era of what I call "gratuitous speed". Speed beyond what will ever be necessary in 99% of applications. Would this new Lotus destroy Nurburgring? Absolutely. But even on the straightest, emptiest, most beautifully paved roads, how fast would you be able to take this thing before having to slow down? 150? 180? Regardless of how fast it could accelerate, you would not be able to take it anywhere near 250, let alone 300. Because by that point, the tyre wear would be so severe even the highest quality rubber would shred in minutes. Anything suddenly jumps out at you, you're dead. And since it's electric, nobody would be able to hear you coming.

Anyone with a brain but more importantly, a heart would agree with Clarkson's sentiments; the natural rumbling cacophony of a powerful engine can never be replaced by a fake noise generated by a speaker from a rumble-less battery with a flat torque curve. Try telling that to the Jewtube commenters who are glad it's the end for ICEs. I'm doing all I can but there's too many of these kikes. They will not take away what is ours.

>I hate to say it, but it's already happening. Volvo won't even sell anything with an ICE in about 2 years time.

Yeah, but who gives a fuck? Volvo is owned by Chinks and chinks want to push EVs because they produce so much of the world's lithium and lithium ion batteries. That's their only motivation for going electric.

>>18533

>1000km? Why would you need to travel 800km? Hardly anyone ever has to travel 500km, so why do you need to travel 250km, goy?

That's the thing, plenty of people do. If Brussels tries to pull that shit, they will immediately piss off the entirety of Eastern Europe and lead the EU to division. Lots of people NEED cars that can drive 400km to and back, and electric isn't going to cut it with how shit chargers and batteries are. EVs are for urbanites and urbanites only.

Just give it a smaller engine capable of less speed. It doesn't need to make much noise - A car doesn't need to be loud to be noticed. If people and drivers look around and pay attention, then all that is needed is a horn for the retards who aren't.

The Frenchies love to stack their cars up against more powerful ones and proclaim them as "worse" for obvious reasons. The second pic related is supposed to be a 306 advert I've seen like 10 times but never bothered to save and now can't find anywhere - it showed a long line of '90s supercars like the 355, E36 M3 and Porsche 993, with a 306 GTi at the back and the tagline "Worst in its class". I can picture it exactly so I'm sure it hasn't been memory-holed.

French here, I can explain: the people of France are a weird bunch. They hate money. You can't talk to them about how much they make a year and how much do their shoes cost and whatnots because you'll be seen as impolite. When they do talk to you about their income, it's to whine about how little they make. Or, on the extreme opposite, how opulent their pay is and that's unfair, I should get paid less. Not that they'll give anything to charities, no no, but because it's seen as "bad" to earn money. So ads here have this weird quirk of appealing to what the French are used to: looking as "not rich" as they can. They'll get the latest car, but the cheapest one, instead of the same price luxury used car. Just so they won't "show off" with their big car and show how "reasonable" they are, even if that makes them complete retards.

As a French, I hate the French car culture and the French's opinion on money.

It's all in your style. Smalles cars in general are fun to drive, because you get a much better sense of speed. I once had to borrow my friends Audi Allroad as a replacement for my Audi 80. The disconnection from the road was horrifying.

The ride is so soft i did not notice i was going 130, power steering made me think i was either missing a front wheel or my trailer was so heavy the front was almost off the ground and i was at least thankfull friend had removed both traction control and ABS from it, so it was predictable on a wet road.

Hell, the less insulation you have between you and the outside the better. Dacias have always been and always will be the minimal legal product you can drive, and i respect them for that.

What? Seat, VW and Škoda for sure. But BMW, Fiat, Peugeot and Renault engines have nothing in common. Ok, Dacia might be Renaults attempt to aim for the super-cheap car market, which always is booming, but other than that, European manufacturers use whatever the hell engines they manage to dig out from thier blueprint piles.

VW might be holding the market by the balls, but there is plenty of variety or options.

If Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Alpine, Bentley, Rolls Royce, BMW (8 series? i8?), Mercedes-Benz (GTR?), Bugatti, Peugeot (308 GTI?), Renault (Megane RS?), Volkswagen (Golf GTI/R?), Volvo (Polestar incoming), Jaguar, hell even Fiat (124 Abarth) and all the smaller Euro carmakers don't make a single car that look appealing to you then I don't see anything that would in the entire car industry.

Also most sports car on the list are RWD or AWD because yes, basic people's cars are obviously FWD because they don't care about high grab and drifts for their everyday commute in crowded, cramped towns. It also makes more room in the cabin since there's no drive shaft and people like roomy cars.

The only thing I can't deny is electronic garbage. Then again, people like having a TV and a computer that tells them all they want everywhere, so you could at least understand why it's happening.

So it finally came out after 15 years of anticipation; the A90 Supra. As the dust on its unveiling begins to settle, what is /o/'s honest opinion about it?

Personally I'm not as critical about it as most seem to be, other than the fact it does seem a little underscale and underpowered. There is still the possibility they give us a 450 BHP RZ version if it stays in production that long, but I would have preferred something that stayed more true to the FT-1 if I'm being honest.

Are there any good modern cars made after the mid-2000s in western markets, all that comes to mind is the Xterra, Frontier, Fiat Panda, Suzuku Jimny, and the XV40 & early XV50. I've been thinking about a Volkswagen but heard terrible things about Jettas and their other cars post-1980s.

VW has the potential to make the perfect car. They already have the e-Golf, which is a electric Golf.

Now imagine them cutting open a Golf Variant. Shoving all the e-Golf guts inside it with even more battery capacity because larger car. And releasing it to the public for reasonable price under 30k.

That would be the electric car for the masses and sell like hotcakes. I want one just thinking about it. No fancy-schmancy Teslas or weird jap shit, just German simplicity, cheap cloth interiors and electric power.

Good modern car? Probably Opel Movano for a van, Seat Ibiza for a car.

The car I want to import is old.enough for the 25 year rule. Has anyone done this? I know there can be complications with foreign VINs. In some states the DMV will choke on them.

My dream is to import a 2-door Honda Today and turn it into pic related. Yes it would still.be a shitty little kei car. Just let me have my fantasy.

Every mid-size tyre shop?

Nvm, forgot that there are no small cars that use small wheels in the States. They are unusual in Europe, but definetaly findable if you visit 2 or 3 shops.

Best time to go wheel hunting is 2 months before season change (only Summer/Winter, spring/autumn don't count), because then the shops will be sending out orders for stuff, and if you ask around, some shop will get whatever tire you need. That's how i buy my wheels, at least. Got them real cheap too, like 35 euromoneys for 2.

The actual car used for the live-action movie is for sale at $13,600. If it isn't sold within 9 months, it'll be scrapped. There are multiple websites that specialize in exports from Japan. 5 minutes of searching yielded me about 2 dozen Honda Todays, but all of them were post-facelifts. My assumption is that most of the pre-facelift models were exported to Russia, Australia and New Zealand during the mid-90s.

It's two lanes wide, so a single row could reasonably fit 6 people. It's more than double the length of a Suburban (a little over 16 feet for the current generation), so six rows of seats will fit with room to spare. 5 rows of passenger bench seats that seat six each. The front row consists of two bucket seats as seen in the intro of the video, with a three-man bench under the center console armrest (which I assume is lifted up and down using a motorized gas spring).

No, they're not just to squeeze as much money from motorists as possible, it's all about safety. That's why the 'safety' cameras are all on main roads with lots of traffic, including buses and trucks. And usually on a downhill section.

Meanwhile, on suburban streets where children play, 'safety' is less important - it's up to Shane in his corsa to decide what is or isn't a 'safe' speed…

This. Flashboxes do nothing for safety anyway, because it takes one week for everyone to know where they are so people slow down a little at the camera and then go full speed ahead afterwards.

It's on it's way my dude.

Too bad the technology itself is still garbage. They claim 220-470 km range, depending on temperature and if it's city or highway, but we all know that's a scam, like pretty much everything about EVs right now. God save us once EU bans sale of new petrol cars, I imagine the price of old never-rusting 205 1.9 diesels skyrockets.

>208

That's a completely fucking new car. It should be called the 209, and the only reason I can imagine it isn't, is because of someone at Peugeot deciding a rebadged Talbot did not deserve the name of "306", so they called it the 309 instead.

Also there's no mistaking it, it's fucking huge compared to its predecessors. The 205 and 206 were small cars. The 207 moved up slightly to the same size as the likes of the Civic and Astra Hatch, but it was still maneuverable enough to be a successor. This on the other hand looks like a lowered crossover. No illusion of compactness in any form, this thing is huge and they know it.
