f1f13f No.11225 [Open thread][Last50 Posts]

Hello everyone, Saab anon here.

I got tired of looking at the brownpills and thought that we should have an active BO. I sent a claim for /o/, and now here I am. the last BO wasn't active since February

I already took the liberty of deleting the brownpills and spoilering some porn, as well as changing the board message. I also made moderation logs completely public because I like transparency.

Some things I would like to do:

>get more banners

>maybe get custom flags - like for automakers, racing teams, etc

>not be a faggot BO

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Post them here for discussion or email me. Post your new banners here as well.

Follow the rules:

>It's irresponsible, and they'll drown in the debt, especially once repair costs mount…

That's why I'm saying $70k is expensive. When I say "can afford" I mean reasonably afford - either paying 100% up front (saved over a reasonably short time) or with a 3-4 year loan that doesn't cripple you financially. Idiots who put themselves $100k into long-term debt to buy a new car cannot afford them.

What about maintenance? Italians always cost a lot to maintain, especially a new Alfa. I don't think you're going to reasonably be able to maintain it with $100k/year after taxes and other living expenses, especially if you are like most people and have debt. It could happen if you pretended you had half your salary to work with for everything else, or if you were smart and didn't have debt, but very few people do either of those things.

New Alfas are shit anyway. Expensive, unreliable, and shit to drive, but pretty to look at? They are the automotive equivalent of stuck-up, retarded supermodels.

How many of you in the states where you "need" a front plate bother and have you ever been pulled over? I ask since I don't want whatever my new car is to be ruined with drill holes or look awful with that huge plate we have here.

I know you can get a thing that makes it so it's not drilled, but I still find it really ugly where they put the plate. It really shows on some cars like the EVO, the STI. A lot of Euro cars too. Even on the mustang it really kills the front of it.

I just really want to make sure the plate is not drilled in on whatever car I get.

that feel when we could have fast rumblin' tumblin' cars superior to conventional fossil fuel based cars in everyway but the jewish menace insists we continue to use GASOLINE.

For the autistic purists, you can keep your old pieces of shit and burn oil all you want, this is mostly regarding a shift in the general production of newer cars. It is a fact that despite more efficient energy systems available, the jewish menace insists on keeping everything literally a century behind in engineering.

Turbine engines have similar "compression ratio" to piston engines, you can swap them pretty much.

let me give you an example, 10:1 CR can be changed to pressure ratio by making it CR^k with k being the specific heat capacity ratio of air.

which you can say is between 1.35 to 1.41 depending on where you are, I'll just use 1.4 which gives you a pressure ratio of 25.12.

to get it's thermal efficiency you'll use a complicated ass formula

1- (1/CR^(k-1)) which with the numbers I gave you with a 10:1 engine is around 60%.

with higher compression ratios and well, turbocharging, you'll get even an even higher efficiency.

if you account for mechanical drag between parts and put it around 85% (which is where the majority of regular cars are) you'll get 51% for just a 10:1 ratio.

So yea, ICE are more efficient than muh electric fags tell you.

Modern GuD powerplants get more than 50% efficiency, so do marine diesels.

Diesel engines in cars get up to 40% peak efficiency, BUT they only get it at medium rpm and high load as shown in >>11131 .

To get there you would need to use a verry low powered engine and even then you would only get a good efficiency driving a constant speed on the highway.

Electric cars get a good efficiency at any speed.

A friend of mine, who has the same generation car as I, found the Saab Workshop Information System (WIS; the factory service manual) on some obscure torrent site and shared it with me. That's what I used to replace the clutch cable. It doesn't seem to have instructions on how to remove just the clutch lever - only removing the entire clutch. There is also no diagnostic guide for it and like I said web searches yielded nothing. My best bet is that the release bearing is jammed in the spring or something, but it seems like fixing that would require dropping the transmission so that can't be it if the repair is cheap. I don't have the knowledge or tools to drop the transmission to remove the clutch and inspect it, so all I can do is take it to the shop.

It always sucks to be beaten and have to go to a shop. But $150 might be worth it if they explain to you what they did to break it loose.

I drove the car back from the shop today. I basically paid $50 for them to just put the cable on the lever… I guess I didn't pull it hard enough. They did do a general inspection and apparently discovered that the accessory belt is worn and a couple gaskets and seals could use replacing, which is nice. I feel double defeated now though…

Hey man, it could be worse. It could have been your girlfriend correctly guessing your no-start after you read the LH-Jet 2.4 manual 3 times and probed half the shit in your fuel system. Fuck. She couldn't even give a short description of the Otto cycle, but damn if my fuel pumps didn't kick on right away.

My Mazda's engine supposedly can't safely use significant boost without aftermarket pistons. Once I do an inevitable engine rebuild I might go for a turbo too, but cam replacement seems like a better option ATM.

Hello /o/, newfag here. So I'm gonna be buying my first car soon and I seek your advices.

My max that I'll probably be able to spend will be 3k. I have my heart set on getting an NA miata, possibly an NB. What should I be looking for and what should I be looking to avoid?

Also what are your opinions on NA vs NB, and just miatas in general?

Can I find a decent miata in for 3k?

Should I get something other than a miata?

Miata?

Thanks…

Since we have a lot of MX5 talk ITT I'll ask here and not make a new thread.

I want to look for a NA in a few months and I had a few questions.

>are they easy cars to learn stick on?

>Are they good in the snow?

>how many miles and what price should I look for ( 90k $5k? 100+ at $2k things like that.

>how much is the most you would pay for an NA.

>are the gen 2's better in anyway that I should look for one if I can't find a good NA ( even though I much rather use an NA

>do you trust ebay to look for one?

on ebay I saw a 1990, has 14,400 miles going for 9k. I can't get it now, but is that a fair asking price and why is it not more than that for a car with less than 20k miles?

I would have it as my DD and that might be 20-50miles a day depending where my new job will be. A car already at 100k is going to hit 200k pretty fast if I drive 50 miles a day 5 days a week.

>are they easy cars to learn stick on?

Legitimately one of the easiest cars to learn sick on

>Are they good in the snow?

Compared to other RWD cars? Yes. Just make sure you buy snow tires and get a limited slip differential if its in your budget.

>how many miles and what price should I look for ( 90k $5k? 100+ at $2k things like that.

Miatas are a dime a dozen. If you pay more than $5k for one with over 80k or so miles than you're getting ripped off. Ones with less mileage will be more expensive, of course.

>how much is the most you would pay for an NA.

Me personally, I'd never pay more than $4k for one, granted I wouldn't mind one with over 100k miles on the clock.

>are the gen 2's better in anyway that I should look for one if I can't find a good NA ( even though I much rather use an NA

Not significantly. It's SLIGHTLY faster iirc but you'd be better off adding forced induction to an NA over switching to an NB if you want your NA to be faster.

>do you trust ebay to look for one?

Only if you can still go see the car in person. I wouldn't buy a car you can't see in person unless it was something like a Japanese import.

> why is it not more than that for a car with less than 20k miles?

because there are already a fuckload of miatas on the market on top of already being cheap when new, so they stay cheap for the same reason used Toyota Camrys stay cheap. Also, it has the benefit of (mostly) avoiding the ricer/drifter taxes that plague other cheap RWD cars.

See above, albeit somewhat more likely

A good rule of thumb, regardless of what car/truck you buy, is to keep $1-2k saved up in addition to what you already have saved up to buy the car in case you need to fix/replace anything (water pump, spark plugs, bushings, etc.)

I follow that rule now. Won't be a problem in the future. I can't do major repairs at home, but that kind of stuff is easy. I am in the north east, but rust isn't as big of a problem where I am. My car is 22 and lived its whole life outside and has no rust like I see in PA or upper NY. It would me a DD till I live can afford to own a pick up as well ( but that's not for a few years so I'll worry about that in the future)

Pic unrelated, just a google image of essentially the same thing.

I bought a trans am for 2300, it's pretty beat up but it drives so i didn't mind the small repairs for the price.

Of course, mechanics couldn't come and check it mobile so i just took my chances. Turns out they replaced the dash with a 20v fuse when it needs a 10v for the gauges or something and that causes explosions, the wiring looks like a spider's nest, the injectors have holes leaking everything and the ECC is unreadable because it's too old for my mechanic's machines.

Now, this is one of my favorite cars so I really have no problem spending the money within reason to fix it and make it great again, but I don't know where to start.

I need advice such as;

Is a classic car workshop worth it, or should I just call a buddy who says he knows them well enough?

Is there a place to get copies of keys cheap for general motors cars?

Where do I buy good replacement parts for the trans am?

If the louvers are cracked (The plastic is snapped but the metal itself is still together) should I just glue it and get new hinges or replace the whole thing and if so, where do I get them?

Where can I get white-text tires to keep the classic look in the future?

Where can I get replacement decals?

Is there a way to know what radios I can put in it? Still has the original sound and stuff.

Upgrades, ways to make it faster or more powerful, any advice at all really. It's my first car, I want to get into vehicles but my dad is RIP and I know nobody.

Thanks so much if you guys can help, happy thanksgiving!

For the headlights, I mean that you should look into standard plug in bulbs for your existing hardware that have higher light output. Quite simple, HIDs usually require a replacement of your existing light hardware.

Fuck the louvers, keep that smooth sexy rear glass.

>headlights

Your car should already have halogen headlights, which should be as bright as every other car on the road. If they're fogged like pic 1, your could try to polish them using one of the products made for the job, or replace them with new ones at about $15 each. I'd recommend fixing your dimmer switch before you replace the headlights, though.

>>12928

>have higher light output.

You could do higher output, but be careful about the wattage. Your original system was designed for 35W low beams and 65W high beams. If you exceed this without increasing the wire gauge, it could overheat the stock wiring. At worst, it could start a fire. There might be some bulbs out there that are brighter with a similar power draw, though. I don't know much about aftermarket headlights.

>>12921

>Is it just the fans that stay on or do both the compressor and fans run after turning the car off

>>12922

>I think only the compressor for the air conditioning keeps running

It sounds like there are some misunderstandings about how a GM AC system works. Follow along in pic 2, bottom left and top right. The diagrams are from my 1969 manuals, but the system is almost identical on your Trans Am. Basically, it is a system where refrigerant flows in a circle through the engine bay. The compressor is basically a belt-driven pump with a 12V clutch connected to the control unit that controls whether the AC is on or off. The compressor pumps the refrigerant through the condenser in the front of the radiator to convert any gasses into a liquid state. This flows to the drier, which sucks the moisture out of the system. The reason it does this is because it then flows through the evaporator core, where it coolPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Hey look,I learn something new. My Camaro is an AC delete car so I've never had to mess with it. As for the light brightness , I was saying in a retarded late night post that he may have some retarded "green" cheapy sealed bulbs in now. Granted that is still not relevant until as both of us have said that he should fix his switch first.
