I feel the high number of atheists today are a natural result of catholicism's oppressive nature for the last 2000 years. Most of the atheists I know either had shitty early lives and lost faith from that or grew up in a strict religious family.

Man's oppressive nature didn't affect his atheism until recent centuries. Worship of money and commerce just made it impossible to worship God, Nietzsche got it right the first time. We live in a J3wish world, and they don't want us to believe in God because it makes us weak. The more J3ws encroached European societies, the more atheist they became.

God historically has been used in literature as a plot device and as a appeal to a universal super authority.
Atheists don't believe in a universal super authority. They, of course I can't seek for every individual, still believe in the authority of nation states, the military, and governments. Basically atheists take out the super-natural parts of society and just see it as people who will hurt them if they don't act right. Which is wall all society is.

Are you the atheist in question? From just what I have noticed there are two types of atheists. The "new atheist" that hangs up Dawkins posters and has to let everyone know he is an atheist, and wants to debate everyone into submission even his own grandmother. Then there is the "nihilistic atheist." This type of atheist is generally more quiet, yet internally they rage at God. The "new atheist" doesn't rage at God, they rage at the concept of God. The nihilistic atheist rages at God because inwardly he desires God the most. He doesn't generally know how much he desires God, but he is angry and screams into the silence of the abyss hoping to catch any whisper of a voice answering back. Fr Seraphim Rose was an example of a nihilistic atheist. The "new atheist" would continue to regect God even if presented with evidence, for he has replaced God with the idol of "Science." The "new atheist" is an atheist in name only.
