Happy anniversary, GamerGate!
To commemorate one year of ethics, shitposting, and sealions galore, we're announcing the start of a new gamedev project: Project SOCJUS.
>What is it?
Project SOCJUS is going to be a 2D beat-'em-up/platformer featuring Vivian James and other GamerGate characters taking on all of SocJus. It may or may not be a Metroidvania, depending on time constraints. The game's plot will cover the events of 2014.
>Plot summary
Thirty years after 1984, in the futuristic Orwellian dystopia of 2014.
IngSoc has fallen, but nothing has changed.
The world is in the grip of a new totalitarian regime: SocJus.
They claim to want equality for all…but some are more equal than others.
One group refuses to listen and believe: Infinity.
They are the last resistance against SocJus.
But Vivian James doesn't care about any of that.
Until one wrong step puts her between them and total domination.
Now, they're coming for her.
And they won't stop until she's erased.

Sadly it's not, we have no connection to the PHM team. Funny thing is, I found out about it sometime after I had the idea for this game, and it looked really interesting. Nothing to report on the coding front, since I've been run off my feet at work lately. I'm still getting stuff ready for our composers, and our sound guy hasn't come back from his trip yet.

Honestly, it feels like things are moving ahead too quickly, and at the same time, too slowly. I've read that it's better for a project to spend more time in the concept stage instead of rushing into production, and yet here we are, doing exactly that. This week, we're finally starting work on sound effects and music. It would've started earlier, but our sound and music guys were waiting on me to give them the SFX list and composition briefs.
We're still going through the voice actors and scheduling callbacks for the best ones; the main cast will probably be selected in the 2nd week of December. Still gotta cough up my half of the scripts for the callbacks.
Our artist is doing some personal stuff he won't explain. I'm hoping he can get the Vivian sprites done in time for the engine demo.
I'm rebuilding the engine from the ground up; the prototype code was hacked out in the first month, but because it was done in a rush and we had no idea what we were doing, we ended up having to scrap it, thanks to all the spaghetti code and inexplicable bugs. Our other coder had to step back from the project, so now I'm handling everything. Gravity's working again, and I'm going to try implementing a more flexible state-based engine based on MUGEN's.

Eh, I feel Rorscharch is a good model for the character, not as much for the voice. Too growly.
The Question is a better voice, but a touch too old, I think. Regardless, I'm curious to see what comes of this.

The Question's voice doesn't really stand out for me, but from what little I heard in his dialogue, he's also got the whole conspiracy thing going on. I'll have to research both of them more when I have the time.

Anyway, to answer your question, we don't have any concrete plans yet. We wanted to release a demo in August, but the game isn't progressing fast enough to make that possible. Currently, we're not planning to release a demo until August 2017, on the same day that the game is launched, mostly because of the stuff about Early Access in this article: https://medium.com/steam-spy/some-things-you-should-know-about-steam-5eaffcf33218#.v8zz5hzao. That's not set in stone, however.
There'll be a closed beta sometime in Spring 2017; that's the earliest that anyone outside the team will be able to play the game. I'd definitely like to get feedback from some anons, especially on the higher difficulty settings.

It'll be announced via the usual channels (blog, Twitter, Reddit, here, etc.) when it's ready. We'll probably need to have some kind of verification process, similar to Brad Glasgow's GG survey. It's an unfortunate necessity, because each copy of the closed beta will be "personalized" with a permanent onscreen watermark showing who it was intended for, in case of leaks. I understand it's inconvenient for anons, so I'll try to find some other way of verifying them as well.

I don't wanna shit too much on this game because it looks good and you clearly put a lot of effort into it. But I tihnk you guys are approaching it a bit too heavy-handed with the story.
I always thought that a Vivian and Friends game tackling lefty politics should be humorous in nature and point out the absurdity of their beliefs rather than being serious and straight-faced telling why this is bad. I personally think making a point through humor has a stronger impact than just matter-of-factly telling you that it's bad.

Too bad this apparently stalled, would've been cool, but one key to making a game with a small team is make the game as small as possible, don't go for a multi hour adventure with expansive artistic graphics, just make it 10 minutes long with 2 frames for movement, 1 frame for attack, spray some tiles around for a level or two, and release it.
IF THE GAME BECOMES BIGGER FROM THERE, then it's a bonus, and you can keep adding more and more to it, and then you don't just have a game you tried to make but only got so far (and in the end it didn't even matter), you have a game you released already, that then exploded in size with further releases. The digital platform makes this possible where it used to not be.
